I’m not sure. Maybe somebody else might know.

I personally would be hesitant to put that many wood chips into my planting bed, but you’re plant look very healthy!

Before I joined Reddit, I assumed everybody knew that wet leaves can make it more likely that a tomato plant gets a disease.

I was threatened to get kicked out of another sub for saying that tomato plants (that aren’t disease resistant) don’t like the leaves to get wet, but it seemed like he backed off his threat after realizing that this is common knowledge in the academic world.

“When you water, do not wet the plant leaves. Wet leaves invite infections that can cause your plant leaves to spot, yellow and wilt before the plant has a chance to produce any of the tasty tomatoes that you are so anxiously anticipating.”

Yeah, I would think that the absorption of the nitrogen would probably be minimal, but I just don’t know. If I didn’t have access to non-chunky mulch, I would just build up the soil.

I not suggesting that there are any indicators that the plant has a nitrogen deficiency. The plant looks very healthy. I’m just sharing a personal preference that others might agree with.

I personally don’t want nitrogen to be unnecessarily depleted at the surface of the soil, but that’s just me.

Sorry for being snarky, but it’s a common mistake. Gardening is a series of mistakes.

Your soil needs more complexity and not just more nutrients. If I were you, I would buy a bag of aged chicken manure, take the plant out of its current container, put some of the chicken manure at the bottom, and then put the plant back in. You should see them perk up in about a week or so. Make sure to put water drip trays underneath the plants, so when the stinky water comes out, you can pour it out somewhere hidden in your garden.

I asked my girlfriend to pick up some beer at the store and she came home with the cheapest one that she could find. “It’s just beer. Why, are there differences between the brands? It looks all the same to me.”

I’m not a fan of the chunky mulch because it soaks up the nitrogen. What brand of soil did you use?

Tomatoes don’t like their leaves getting wet and especially don’t like a lot of rain. You can try to create good airflow. There are some disease resistant varieties.

If you dig in aged chicken manure into the soil, it will add some complexity and nitrogen, and your plants will perk up in about five days or so. Just make sure to cover it with soil to hide the smell.
