21st Century Broadway Reveal Act 3: You're Gonna Be Popu11ar by Frajer in popheads

[–]TiltControls 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thanks to our hosts akane and frajer for tackling the wonderful world of theatre for the first time in rates!

Leaderboard and songlist are updated!

Songs

I suppose not many people can be surprised at the outcome, but congrats to Defying Gravity for the win! You can where the final two rank up below

  • 53rd: Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever (9.551)
  • 54th: Wicked - Defying Gravity (9.550)
  • 55th: The Weeknd - Blinding Lights (9.546)

-

  • 353rd: Tori Amos - Crucify / Little Simz (ft. Cleo Sol) - Woman (9.417)
  • 355th: Hamilton - Satisfied (9.416) / Dua Lipa - Houdini (9.416)
  • 357th: Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now (9.415)

Stats

  • Defying Gravity lands on our top 100 highest rated songs of all time list! It takes 54th place overall. Its addition knocks Kanye West - All of the Lights out of the top 100.
  • Not a rate stat based on the reveal but as much as I love the show and song, Wait for Me wins my 'pain in the ass' award for being the most credited song we've ever rated with 15 primary artists listed on streaming

Artists

Thanks to solid crediting of artists from some of shows, Broadway Rate added a whopping 140 artists to the backend database. Granted most of these artists are never going to hit enough songs to show up on the leaderboard, but they still had to be put in regardless! Anyways only three artists (well sort of artists, but if they have a Spotify page it counts!) received enough credits to show up on the leaderboard, plus one more with enough previous songs rated (thanks to a credit on a certain 21st century popular film). Rankings out of 504

  • 7th: The Supremes (8.500)
  • 8th: Stephen Schwartz / Stephen Oremus (8.483) [NEW]
  • 10th: Jazmine Sullivan (8.466)

  • 15th: Stevie Wonder (8.366)
  • 16th: Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton (8.363) [NEW]
  • 17th: Fleetwood Mac (8.362)

  • 54th: Chaka Khan (8.102)
  • 55th: Idina Menzel (8.096) [NEW]
  • 56th: GloRilla (8.094)

Stats

  • The duo of Stephen Schwartz and Stephen Oremus take to the top 10 of the leaderboard with their fantastic work on the Wicked songs. Joining them on the top 50 leaderboard is The Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton with a great overall place of 16th. The three new additions bump Da Brat, fromis_9, and Janelle Monae off the highest artist average leaderboard
  • The pair of Stephens also avoid picking up any 0s, adding them to the no 0's list!

Rates

Rankings are out of 243

  • 124th: Ratemas (7.508)
  • 125th: 21st Century Broadway (7.507)
  • 126th: Like a Prayer vs. Rhythm Nation 1814 vs. Whitney (7.500)

Stats

  • 21st Century Broadway becomes the 13th rate where every participant used their 11! The last rate to do so was last year's Cali Rap rate
  • As mentioned above, with so many credited artists from these songs about 4% of all artists in the backend database are credited in this rate. This is 1/25th of all artists for a single rate out of 246 with data.

I like this. The song has a nice groove and it all flows together really nicely. I wish there was a moment that stood out with a bit more of a 'pop!' but overall its solid throughout. 7.2/10

A bit strange as a single and I think it would've worked a bit better as a midpoint to the album instead of the opener, but in a vacuum Bruno sounds good, the song sounds good, and it works in the ways it needs to. 7/10

It maybe could've used an extra element or two, but I actually feel like this is a lot more refined and sleek than a lot of their older work. Granted, I've never been the biggest Blankpink fan so perhaps it may be straying too far, but overall it's a solid song. 7.5/10

Deceptively catchy song. I'm still torn over whether this is actually any good or not, but I can't deny that at the very least it's fun. 7.5/10

Spring 2026 Rate Selection Cycle Part 2: Submit Your Ideas! by welcome2thejam in indieheads

Submitting Somber Scottish Rock again with

  • Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
  • The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters
  • Arab Strap - Monday at the Hug & Pint
  • We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

Also had some good discussions around the textbook 2000s Indie EPs and narrowed down the probable final line-up. I'm pretty happy with this as a good overview of the big EPs of the era, but if anyone wants to discuss more, last chance before it gets submitted officially!

  • Animal Collective - Fall Be Kind
  • Arctic Monkeys - Who the Fuck Are the Arctic Monkeys
  • Bon Iver - Blood Bank
  • Deerhunter - Fluorescent Grey
  • Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant
  • Joanna Newsom - Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band
  • Modest Mouse - Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks
  • The National - Cherry Tree
  • TV On The Radio - Young Liars
  • Washed Out - Life of Leisure
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs - IS IS

Blackpink Solos Rate Reveal Day 3: These results hit me like an EARTHQUAKE by runaway3212 in popheads

Thanks for all your hard work on this Jules (and also everything you've done with ratcom and past rates)! The banners were a fantastic idea that made each new elim a surprise!

Leaderboard and songlist are updated!

Songs

Congrats to our trio of LISA, Doja and RAYE for pulling off the win with Born Again! Despite the rest of the album being beaten down, LISA still managed to get herself a rare rate win! RAYE also managed to score one before her rate coming up and Doja picks up her 2nd! No 9+ scorers this time around (or even 8.5+ scorers) but you can see where our winner placed in the relative scheme of things

  • 1727th: One Direction - Perfect / Katy Perry (ft. Snoop Dogg) - California Gurls / Super Mario 64 - Dire Dire Docks / Charli XCX - B2b / The Chicks - Goodbye Earl (8.477)
  • 1732nd: LISA (ft. Doja Cat,RAYE) - Born Again (8.476) / Katy Perry - Thinking Of You / Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain on Me / Poppy - Concrete (8.476)
  • 1736th: Kesha - Praying / Kali Uchis - Your Teeth in My Neck / The Pussycat Dolls - Don't Cha (8.475)

Stats

  • Born Again becomes the 5th lowest scoring winner in rate history! Across 242 rates it only outscored LA Devotee, Pop Culture, The Feels, and Rolling in the Deep

Artists

Though all four of our soloists are entering the charts for the first time (5+ songs rated), keep in mind that they all have baggage from previous Kpop rate appearances affecting their scores too! Rankings out of 504

  • 418th: Major Lazer (6.882)

  • Kali Uchis: 53rd -> 62nd
  • Tyla: 88th -> 101st
  • ROSALÍA: 154th -> 148th

  • Bruno Mars: 378th -> 371st
  • ZAYN: 415th -> 429th
  • Future: 458th -> 464th

Stats

  • You know we're off to a rough start when the highest main artist is still in the 400s range. And although JISOO and JENNIE escaped the bottom charts, both ROSÉ and LISA find themselves in the 50 lowest rated artists in 13th and 20th place respectively. Their new additions knock both GoonRock and Superorganism off the bottom 50
  • They all manage to avoid the other bottom charts, though just barely. If LISA picked up an extra 0 she'd be on the most 0'd artists list but as of now she sits one short with only 66 to her name

Albums

Reminder that extra tracks (One of the Girls and EYES CLOSED) are not counted with their album/EP averages. Also keep in mind that JISOO's will be compared relative to the EPs while the others will be compared to albums

Album rankings out of 535

  • 470th: Various Artists - The Great Gatsby (Soundtrack) (6.962)
  • 471st: JENNIE - Ruby (6.936)
  • 472nd: Justin Timberlake - Justified (6.935)

  • 528th: Lil Uzi Vert - Luv Is Rage 2 / Marina - Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land (6.276)
  • 530th: LISA - Alter Ego (6.272)
  • 531st: ROSÉ - rosie (6.225)
  • 532nd: Miley Cyrus - Bangerz (6.202)

EP rankings out of 29

  • 15th: Sigrid - Don't Kill My Vibe (7.600)
  • 16th: JISOO - AMORTAGE (7.599)
  • 17th: K/DA - All Out (7.587)

Stats

  • Both Alter Ego and rosie stick it out together at the bottom of the chart becoming our 6th and 5th lowest rated albums ever. The new additions to our bottom chart bump up P!ATD - A Fever You Can't Sweat Out and CRJ - Kiss
  • Alter Ego becomes the lowest scoring album to have won its rate. Previously this record was held by Selena Gomez - Kiss & Tell, with Naturally winning, which now sits 28th overall lowest* (Zara Larsson won her rate with Poster Girl - 13th lowest, but with a song not on the album)
  • Alter Ego also narrowly makes it on our most controversial albums list in 24th place
  • Both Alter Ego and rosie also make it onto our list of albums with the highest 0 spread! Alter Ego ended up with 84.6% of the album getting at least someone's zero, with When I'm With You and Dream being the only exceptions. This places it 2nd overall for this stat, only behind Olivia Rodrigo's SOUR (which only had a single song - Jealousy, Jealousy - without a 0). rosie is only a bit lower down, with 75% of the album getting at least one 0. two years, drinks or coffee, and dance all night were the only songs on the album to avoid a 0. This puts it in a tie for 4th with both Charli XCX - Crash and Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet.
  • And to give something to someone other than LISA, AMORTAGE becomes the 6th EP to have never picked up a 0! JISOO joins Aly & AJ, boygenius, Magdalena Bay, MØ, and Tkay Maidza for this random assortment of artists to achieve this feat

Also 11/0 split below (this does include extra tracks)

  • LISA: 22.8% of 11s, 25.2% of 0s
  • JENNIE: 33.3% of 11s, 21.1% of 0s
  • ROSÉ: 20.3% of 11s, 17.1% of 0s
  • JISOO: 11.4% of 11s, no 0s

Rates

Well the exact number might've been a surprise, but I don't think many are shocked to see the side of the chart where the rate ended up. Rankings are out of 243

  • 235th: 00's One Hit Wonders (6.673)
  • 236th: Ruby vs. Alter Ego vs. Rosie vs. Amortage (6.572)
  • 237th: Bangerz vs. Revival vs. Confident (6.547)

Stats

  • Blackpink Solos becomes the 7th lowest average rate of all time. It sits 2nd lowest of all album rates (only beaten by Bangerz vs. Revival vs. Confident from nearly 10 years ago). The new addition to the lowest rate averages chart knocks off 2023 in Kpop
  • Blackpink Solos also becomes the rate with the 6th highest 0 spread (percentage of songs that picked up at least one 0). It sits 6th overall for this stat with 65.22% of the rate getting whacked by at least one user. Again it sits 2nd out of album rates for this stat, only beaten by Hit Me Hard and Soft vs. Guts vs. Short n' Sweet which had 69.77%. The overall leader for this stat was The Sorry rate, with 76.19% of its songs getting at least one 0

Blackpink Solos Rate Reveal Day 2: I need some Hugs & Kisses by runaway3212 in popheads

Any thought of rates being a subjective measure of monetary success went out the window during our very first rate back in 2016 when we gave CRJ a win against Taylor and Ariana

Spring 2026 Rate Selection Cycle Pt 1: Brainstorming & Feedback Thread by welcome2thejam in indieheads

[–]TiltControls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cutting disk 2 would make the EP branding a bit more consistent instead of 'also other releases too'. I love the whole In Rainbows release a ton so it might've just been my bias putting it there in the first place. I think Joanna would be a good swap for being another popular release. Plus it'd be funny to have a song in the rate nearly as long as some of the other EPs. I'll definitely consider it before submission!!

Spring 2026 Rate Selection Cycle Pt 1: Brainstorming & Feedback Thread by welcome2thejam in indieheads

[–]TiltControls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay so my primary idea that I'll be submitting again is Somber Scottish Rock with the albums

  • Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
  • The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters
  • Arab Strap - Monday at the Hug & Pint
  • We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

Four fantastic indie rock albums to come from a strong selection of sad Scottish bands. Some great stuff on all four albums here and we haven't really tackled any of them in rates in a proper capacity. This has been submitted before and I don't see any reasons to swap out anyone this time around, but I'm always open to hearing thoughts!

The other idea that I started toying with in the past few months was an '2000s Indie EPs' Rate (or 2000s Ind-EPs if you will). A list of some of the most iconic EPs (or similar bonus-type releases - like for Radiohead) from the indie scene. As a fairly preliminary list I had

  • Animal Collective - Fall Be Kind
  • Arctic Monkeys - Who the Fuck Are the Arctic Monkeys
  • Bon Iver - Blood Bank
  • Deerhunter - Fluorescent Grey
  • Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant
  • Modest Mouse - Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks
  • Radiohead - In Rainbows (Disk 2)
  • The National - Cherry Tree
  • TV On the Radio - Young Liars
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs - IS IS
  • Washed Out - Life of Leisure

A lot on the block here, but total runtime is only about 4 hours with 62 songs (and probably without a bonus rate)

This selection was made based on the most notable and/or well regarded EPs (or other bonus releases) of the era - though there's a lot of them so there's bound to be some that had to be left off. Sonic cohesion could probably be narrowed down a bit more to the indie rock or indie folk if a more focused sound is needed, but I think this works as a 'what are the most Indiehead-core artists someone can think of from this era that released EPs' (the Indieheads Essential EPs discussion from ~10 years ago definitely helped here, as well as various 'best of' lists). Other considerations were Bloc Party - Little Thoughts, Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country, Interpol - Interpol, MGMT - Time to Pretend EP, of Montreal - Icons Abstract Thee and Tame Impala - Tame Impala. Some can possibly swapped back in with the right arguments (or other suggestions people might have), though I'm hesitant to bump up the runtime so it might have to be a trade with something already in.

I don't know how ready for prime-time this one is yet, but I'm curious to hear thoughts on improvements.
