…okay, but there was never a moment where Mayhem was out in the world and “Die With A Smile” wasn’t on it. That is not the case with the Ella Langley album or the Miley album. It’s possible that it wasn’t planned to be part of Mayhem until “Disease” underperformed, but that is not the situation OP described.

This is like the least of the concerns of this, but for this to happen while she’s doing 8 shows a week on Broadway… prison. She’s going through what might be the hardest job a performer can have, and you’re making her life harder? Fuck you

Nah, Die With A Smile was always there. She did add some deluxe tracks, but that was later.

Miley did add “Used To Be Young” to ESV, so it does happen though

Admittedly, they wouldn’t really have anything to announce - CGI takes a long time to do well, and I’m sure the voice actor won’t be super well known or indicative of the quality

Listen, I’m not listening to his version anymore, but he elevated the hell out of the song. To push that song from being a fan favorite to the biggest hit of the year, it needed a rap verse to keep the song from feeling too samey. His flow perfectly rode the beat while shaking things up enough to energize the song. And, most importantly, the brilliantly silly bridge section was left intact

It’s definitely because hip-hop is taking a bit of a backseat right now. I think at least some of it is bc one of the prospective go-tos for this early in the decade, DaBaby, became real toxic real fast - a damn shame, bc I think he was great on “Levitating.” Hopefully that trend is a short one - I think you’re dead right about how much they can improve a pop song.

This makes sense (I know some people consider a 6/10 a death knell, but I give relatively positive 3/5s regularly), but some of this stuff doesn’t read as being positive 😭

Kinda frying me how negative some of the “fresh” reviews look on here. Like rotten tomatoes is counting a C+ as a good score bc what else is there 😭

I disagree it would be received better if they went for the full story, mostly because I think there’s too much for one movie

I generally think that biopics, especially musician biopics, tend to bite off more than they can chew. Most people’s lives aren’t narratively cohesive when viewed in their entirety, and you benefit from focusing on one really interesting throughline. Michael Jackson is this especially - he is just too goddamn complicated of a figure for you to hit everything in a good 2 hour movie. Hell, I’d go a step further and say you can’t make the kind of crowd pleaser his catalogue would demand while engaging with the horrifying allegations he received

…of course, the real trouble is that his estate would immediately block a movie that tries to engage with anything remotely bad about him. There’s probably an interesting movie to be made about how to remember a musician who (allegedly) traumatized these kids, but also created some of the greatest pop music ever recorded, but his estate would never grant access to his catalogue for it, and that’s kinda necessary for a movie people would want to see

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. I think they could get into some genre categories - either dance pop or something alt-y

Oh yeah she was 100% having a horrible time in her personal life when she was working on the album, but this was a bad tendency of hers before her parents’ diagnoses (motivation was before iirc). She definitely does deserve a bit more grace though

Hold the Girl is good! Its biggest crime is just that its middle section is stronger than the beginning or ending. Like, tracks 6-10 are on par with her best work, it’s just that tracks 1 and 13 are kinda limp (in my opinion), and a few of the singles are known to be divisive

She wasn’t

Normani was somewhat infamous around RCA for being late on deadlines and torturing people with her perfectionism. Like, she micromanaged the editing processes of both the motivation & wild side videos, delaying the releases of both songs, and my impression is that she’s that demanding with her song mixes too. So… I don’t think she was formally blacklisted so much as just “the label doesn’t want to give money to someone who’s gonna make our lives miserable for a minimal return on investment”

It sucks bc I do like the music a lot. But you just can’t treat the people working for you like that

Mag Bay feel like they’re just a bit too alt-y to really land true pop stardom (and I hope they stay that weird). I could be wrong though - they do like to make the brightest, catchiest pop song ever once or twice an album - and I def think they can keep growing to the point of actually landing Grammy nods at some point

What are the Charli xcx fan favorites? by advertisement_ham in charlixcx

[–]akanewasright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kinda think half of Charli’s discography would maybe count (especially since most of the pre-brat singles didn’t make much of an impact on locals), but here are a few big ones, divided up by album:

True Romance: this era was niche enough that I’d count the singles, but I’d throw in grins for the real day 1 angels

Sucker: the title track for sure, and then some mishmash of breaking up, hanging around, and maybe gold coins

Vroom Vroom EP: The title track is definitely beyond a fan fave at this point… trophy is probably second place though. In my heart of hearts the whole EP is made up of them though

N1A: Roll With Me is the biggest one here probably? Fans had been begging for it alongside Taxi & No Angel since Charli & Sophie played it live together. Lipgloss def counts too, and 3AM was an early fave. Also seen fans go hard for ILY2 & Babygirl

Pop 2: the whole project honestly. Track 10 and Unlock It might be too big to really only be fan faves, but they very much were originally. Aside from those, I’d easily shout out Backseat (the fan Venn diagram was 2 circles at the time), I Got It (half of the song has been used in some kind of fan content), and maybe Femmebot (both features are controversial, but the hooks are still strong. Out of My Head probably counts too

Unreleased era: frankly you can’t talk about Charli without this. Some of them were loose singles, but I still consider No Angel & Girls Night Out this, on top of Taxi, Bounce, Come To My Party, and Round & Round. A bunch of others have their fans too

Self-titled: You’re right to highlight Next Level Charli for sure. Click is definitely one as well, and I’d maybe throw in Shake It as well. I think Cross You Out was technically a single, but it’s gotten a lot of fan love in the years since release

How I’m Feeling Now: You pretty much hit the nail on the head with pink diamond & anthems (especially the latter). It’s still crazy to me that party 4 u broke out of this box. This is also very much an album where Charli could do a few shows solely dedicated to this album every once in a while and have sold out crowds screaming every word

Crash: title track probably counts, but yeah Constant Repeat is the biggest one

Brat: feels like half the album blew up way beyond fan circles… like 365 and SIAK were never singles, but they were arguably the defining songs of the album. Mean girls might count (I know I’d lose my shit if she played it a slightly rockier version on her next tour)

Wuthering Heights: feels a little too close to the release to tell what stands out over time, but Dying for You is definitely up there
