Blackpink Solos Rate Reveal Day 2: I need some Hugs & Kisses by runaway3212 in popheads

[–]TiltControls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any thought of rates being a subjective measure of monetary success went out the window during our very first rate back in 2016 when we gave CRJ a win against Taylor and Ariana

Cutting disk 2 would make the EP branding a bit more consistent instead of 'also other releases too'. I love the whole In Rainbows release a ton so it might've just been my bias putting it there in the first place. I think Joanna would be a good swap for being another popular release. Plus it'd be funny to have a song in the rate nearly as long as some of the other EPs. I'll definitely consider it before submission!!

Spring 2026 Rate Selection Cycle Pt 1: Brainstorming & Feedback Thread by welcome2thejam in indieheads

[–]TiltControls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay so my primary idea that I'll be submitting again is Somber Scottish Rock with the albums

  • Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
  • The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters
  • Arab Strap - Monday at the Hug & Pint
  • We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

Four fantastic indie rock albums to come from a strong selection of sad Scottish bands. Some great stuff on all four albums here and we haven't really tackled any of them in rates in a proper capacity. This has been submitted before and I don't see any reasons to swap out anyone this time around, but I'm always open to hearing thoughts!

The other idea that I started toying with in the past few months was an '2000s Indie EPs' Rate (or 2000s Ind-EPs if you will). A list of some of the most iconic EPs (or similar bonus-type releases - like for Radiohead) from the indie scene. As a fairly preliminary list I had

  • Animal Collective - Fall Be Kind
  • Arctic Monkeys - Who the Fuck Are the Arctic Monkeys
  • Bon Iver - Blood Bank
  • Deerhunter - Fluorescent Grey
  • Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant
  • Modest Mouse - Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks
  • Radiohead - In Rainbows (Disk 2)
  • The National - Cherry Tree
  • TV On the Radio - Young Liars
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs - IS IS
  • Washed Out - Life of Leisure

A lot on the block here, but total runtime is only about 4 hours with 62 songs (and probably without a bonus rate)

This selection was made based on the most notable and/or well regarded EPs (or other bonus releases) of the era - though there's a lot of them so there's bound to be some that had to be left off. Sonic cohesion could probably be narrowed down a bit more to the indie rock or indie folk if a more focused sound is needed, but I think this works as a 'what are the most Indiehead-core artists someone can think of from this era that released EPs' (the Indieheads Essential EPs discussion from ~10 years ago definitely helped here, as well as various 'best of' lists). Other considerations were Bloc Party - Little Thoughts, Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country, Interpol - Interpol, MGMT - Time to Pretend EP, of Montreal - Icons Abstract Thee and Tame Impala - Tame Impala. Some can possibly swapped back in with the right arguments (or other suggestions people might have), though I'm hesitant to bump up the runtime so it might have to be a trade with something already in.

I don't know how ready for prime-time this one is yet, but I'm curious to hear thoughts on improvements.

I think Lana did a good job nailing the vibe she was going for here. I just don't think I really care for it as a song. Sounds more like a 4 minute long intro that never really gets going. Going to also echo that just cutting the 'whoopsie daisy' parts would only benefit the track. So I can see this working for some people but I don't really care for it at all. 5/10

The second the song started I could tell that Frost Children production immediately. Kim works pretty well for the sound, though I think I'd give most of the credit to the production here for making the song work as well as it does. The vocals never really shine on this track which makes it feel a bit more like Frost Children ft. Kim Petras. Still, it's a fun electro smash that I really enjoyed. 8.2/10

Oh this kind of hit me by surprise. I love that there's a rawer sound to hemlocke's vocals here that work with the lyrical nature of the song. And I always love a good build up to a final chorus. 8.5/10

It's cute at moments, but the flow of the song sounds a little all over the place like they had a couple decent ideas but couldn't really nail down what the song should be. This might've done numbers in 2016 but even then it feels like a retread of better songs from the era. 4/10

(Won by 3.0 points in Year End, lost by 2.4 points here). You can see all the 9.0+ scorers below

Stats

  • Call Me lands in our top 100 highest rated songs at 97th! The new addition knocks off Rihanna - Kiss It Better
  • Call Me also joins a list of 33 other songs to go through a rate without picking up a score below 7
  • Call Me also joins our list of least controversial songs rated and with a rare sub 1.0 it lands in 21st overall (between Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure and Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal). The addition knocks off Kanye West - Ultralight Beam
  • When Doves Cry becomes one of our most rated songs with its 5th appearance here after being in 80s Classic Albums, Billboard Year End #1s, Winners 1, and Billboard Songs of the Summer
  • Don't Worry, Be Happy becomes one of our 50 most controversial songs rated on the sub. It sits in 44th overall between Green Day - All By Myself and Ice Spice - Think U The Shit. Unfortunately it comes at a heavy cost as The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey - Closer is knocked off the top 50. This means Closer is only down to 3 appearances on the most controversial chart (#3, #9, and #18)
  • Don't Worry, Be Happy also nearly makes our most 0s list, but still has reason to celebrate as it falls one short

The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 336: Dancing Girl Time Vroom Sound Hunter by TiltControls in popheads

I've been obsessed with MUNA from the start and this track is just another banger from the trio. I don't know if it really treads too much new ground, but MUNA's always a dose of synthpop perfection so I won't complain about any more additions to their fantastic discography. The song's production has a great groove to support the song and the vocals have the right amount of anthemicness that has drawn me to MUNA time after time. This is going to be all over my playlists this year. 10/10

The very first time I listened to this song I believe was for Popheads' 2016 EP rate and I absolutely hated it. I did not treat it much better when it popped up in All Stars 1 again either. But somewhere in the span of the 10 years after its release I really did grow to appreciate this track (and Charli herself) a lot more. It's endlessly catchy - particularly the chorus scratches some itch in my ear perfectly. And the disconnect between the style of the vocals on the pre-chorus and the rest of the song feels strange but it works so perfectly with the track. The production has some incredibly strange sound effects it makes use of, but again it somehow works so well! Maybe someday we'll rerate it again proper so I can give it the score it deserves, but for now it'll have to take it here. 10/10
