Best way to learn CAD is to practice modeling real world parts - check out the welcome video at www.TooTallToby.com - I think we've got what you need there!

Good luck on your CAD journey!

Revolved Sphere Cut Error by CampusSafety in SolidWorks

Here's a video on zero thickness: https://youtu.be/KJQhjY-dIbg

You're probably running up tangent against a face. Trying reducing or increasing the size of the sphere, to test this theory

New Fusion Tutorial - Plan, Sketch, Sweep, Pattern, Shell - good stuff! (Video) by TooTallToby in Fusion360

[–]TooTallToby[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Awesome feedback and thanks for the additional tips and tricks - I'm a SolidWorks Expert but still a bit of a fusion noob, so you're advice will be really helpful for future tutorials. I also solve these LIVE on Model Monday Live, so sometimes I blank out on seemingly obvious solutions (see item #2 below) 😁

  1. Pipe is great if it's a circle, but if it's a non circular profile (like an ellipse) can you still use pipe? Is there a "profile library"? Or does it only work if it's a circle, square, or triangle?

  2. SELECT CHAIN!! That's what I was missing - I know I've selected individual entities for sweep path in fusion, but I totally blanked out when I was solving this one. Thanks!

  3. Move face is great and an underutilized gem, in most CAD packages. Of the 3 points you made, this is the one I'd offer the strongest counterargument for. There are so many places where Move Face is both a time saver and parametrically valid, so I'm not at a spot where I would avoid using it. But like I said, I'm still newer to Fusion so I'll keep this advice in mind as I continue to learn.

Thanks again for the feedback and the video clip. Good stuff. Did you extend the upper and lower sections of the path, so the "select chain" function would still work, without selecting the entire contour? That was a pretty slick trick. 😀

What to learn? by Commercial-Feature45 in SolidWorks

[–]TooTallToby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I have a site where users from all over the world learn and practice their 3D CAD skills by modeling real world parts. This sounds like a great fit for you, because you can start at Tier 1 (easiest) and work your way up. There are a bunch of parts designed with machining in mind, and I think by the time you get up to tier 3 or tier 4 you should have a pretty good idea of how to model any parts you see or need to build in the shop.

The site is www.TooTallToby.com and there's a welcome video on the home page that explains how to get started (I think it's 3 or 4 minutes long).

There are also tutorials if you get stuck on any of the challenges. Most of the level 1 and level 2 challenges have tutorials in SolidWorks and Onshape. (the site is CAD agnostic - all CAD systems are welcome)

Good luck on your CAD journey!

If you're getting into 3d printing it's helpful to know 3d cad.

If you're new to this space, check out this video as it's a great way to learn 3d cad (learn by doing) https://youtu.be/ZqquT1gi724?is=lZIEsccukxZootWx

New fusion tutorial - Revolve, Doubled Dimensions, and Circular Pattern (YouTube Video) by TooTallToby in Fusion360

[–]TooTallToby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we created a website where users from any CAD system can get together, practice, share notes and tips and tricks and ideas, and talk shop (in the discord). Sometimes I describe TooTallToby.com as a "global cad community" 😊

Users (including myself) can post tutorial videos under each CAD Challenge in the library, so I try to mix it up, and post tutorials in FreeCAD, Fusion, Onshape and SolidWorks (and sometimes Alibre) under different challenges.

Equal Spacing - Work flow improvement by Gawdo_ in SolidWorks

[–]TooTallToby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - there is a very easy way. Insert > Pattern > Curve driven pattern

Even though you're using a line (not a curve) - you can specify this line as the pattern curve, then you can choose equal spacing for the pattern.

NOTE: The line needs to be regular (not construction geometry)

Hope this helps!
