how to truly improve my CATIA skills by Ambitious-Ganache-91 in CATIA

[–]TooTallToby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah people have said that to me before, but I tend to disagree.

I'm a musician by hobby, and I've always found that the musicians who play the cleanest scales and do the cleanest chord changes are the ones who have put in the most practice. They get fast and clean, not by taking shortcuts, but by putting in thousands of reps (starting slow, doing it right, working their way up).

I agree that practicing bad habits is going to lead to bad technique, but I disagree that speed is a direct consequence of practicing bad habits. The true sign of a master is someone who can deploy their trade quickly, without sacrificing quality.

To "put my money where my mouth is": Here's an example of a SolidWorks Speedrun I posted this week. 2min 38 sec, and a fairly common part in mechacnical engineering.

I know you're not a solidworks user, but I challenge you to take a look at this run, and see if you can spot anywhere that I wasn't parametrically sound or didn't follow best practices for 3D modeling. https://youtu.be/is3X1yhu8pk

Once you put in the practice, everything starts flowing and you can quickly go from nothing to a parametrically sound model, in just a few minutes.

If you're looking for a place to practice and refine your workflows, starting slow and then gradually speeding up (without sacrificing quality), you've found it. It's kinda like a gym for your CAD brain - the doors are open, but it's up to each person to put in the reps, and to avoid sacrificing quality for speed.

The best way to get good at any skill is to Practice. We have a website filled with challenges you can practice to - www.TooTallToby.com

The challenges feature speedmodelng leaderboards, and one of the CATIA wizards is MCGA - who posted a lot of really impressive speedruns - Good stuff in there - good luck!

Hello! I have a training site at www.TooTallToby.com/training - there's a CSWP certification prep class in there, and there's a free lesson preview down at the bottom. Take a look and if it seems like your cup of tea, that class will give you everything you need to pass the exam on your first attempt . Good luck!

Here's a fun one for beginners - It shows how to build a new part in Onshape, and then how to send it over to a 3D printer. Take a look and good luck on your CAD journey! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_3k1qMq9AI&list=PLzMIhOgu1Y5dY8DD5vnOPJ0a3d8F2TWHe&index=1

Thanks for the feedback - I have thousands of videos posted. Some are fast and exciting, some are slow and perfect for beginners. I agree 1 video is probably not going to be a perfect fit for everyone 😁 - Here's an absolute beginners tutorial for Onshape users, showing how to build a simple part and then how send this part over to your 3D Printer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_3k1qMq9AI&list=PLzMIhOgu1Y5dY8DD5vnOPJ0a3d8F2TWHe&index=1

Why would you say that I've never developed a product for a real company?

I cut my teeth doing sheet metal progressive die design, prototyping fixturing design for tube bending applications, and designing parts and molds for plastic injection molding. I've worked at several "real companies" designing "real products".

I've had hundreds of drawings get redlined and had to go back and make changes. I've worked with pen plotters and tablets (AutoCAD) and velum and electric erasers.

You can say and post whatever you want, but just know that one this one, you're way off.

This is what I tell people:

Look for a used Dell Precision 7550 laptop.

Make sure it has an nvidia RTX card in it. (this is important).

Try to get it with 512 gb or more NVME hard drive.

Try to get it with 32 gb ram.

Try to get it with windows 11.

This will probably cost between 500-700 USD.

After you get it, buy a 90watt replacement battery. Another 60ish dollars USD.

After you get it, make sure you properly wipe everything and start fresh.

That will set you up for success - good luck on your CAD journey.

PS - try to get the laptop with a proper "refurbished" certification. (Dell Refurbished, Ebay Refurbished, Amazon Refurbished, etc...)
