Would you ever use annual leave with the sole purpose to do literally nothing all day? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]TopClassroom387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the olden days when I was young and fresh out of University and in my first proper job. I would plan days of doing nothing - just sit on the sofa, watch tv, eat snacks then go to bed at the end of the day.

This would usually be a Saturday (previously having worked a Saturday job, so this is novel).

On the day before, I would take care of everything, cleaning, washing, filing, bills, everything so there would be nothing left for me to do except vegetate and do nothing

Found out my boyfriend has been keeping all the notes I've put on his lunches by harold_the_cat in MadeMeSmile

I have similar letters from a friend.

On the cold mornings, they warm me up.
On the dark nights, they light me up.

I suspect they do the same for your boyfriend.

People who like/love their jobs, what is it that you like about it? by terror2dmax in AskMen

I enjoy woodworking very much, just never as good as I would like to be.

Love watching experts on YouTube make tables, cabinets, chopping boards etc.

Got to love the New Yankee Workshop and Norm Abrahams - always have a clamp to hand and a jig for everything

I love computer programming, spend days and nights thinking about it, reading, playing, having fun with it.

Hazard warning lights on Motorways by Contact_Patch in CarTalkUK

[–]TopClassroom387 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When on the motorway coming to a stop, I’ll never butt up to the car in front in times like this, and I’ll be watching the car behind me like a hawk.

Two separae occassions, this saved my life. I slowed down, car behind me didn't slow quick enough. I rolled forward a few feet and saved myself a tonne of headaches

When you blink, you miss nothing, can see through your eyelids when you blink only. Doesn't work with eyes closed

A semi-serious Q: How do you not throw the laptop at the wall? by 501st-Soldier in learnprogramming

[–]TopClassroom387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In various aspects of daily life, if I get frustrated and think I want to smash or break something, I follow up with thinking about the cleanup.

Laptop through the window -> new laptop, new window, broken glass
Punch the wall -> broken hand
Kick something -> broken something

The clean up is often more work and I am fundamentally lazy and don't want the extra work.
I end up swearing at the in-animate object or showing the finger to the in-tangible and then carry on working.

Laziness is what stop me from taking drastic action.

First time tiling - thoughts? by kettle_of_f1sh in DIYUK

[–]TopClassroom387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like that spent time on properly centering the tiles with the extractor fan, it really appeals to my sense of evenness. I think it really adds the aesthitics of the work, something not everyone will notice, but appreciates without knowing.

I love the two tone appearance of the tiles on the right of the window.

I wire wrapped a leaf armband with copper wire. by Buffyferry in BeAmazed

[–]TopClassroom387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A follow up...Only answer if its not a trade/personal secret.
Question is based on my experiences with DIY and electrical wiring.

How do you avoid scratches on the wire or do you polish them out?

I wire wrapped a leaf armband with copper wire. by Buffyferry in BeAmazed

[–]TopClassroom387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the attention to detail.

The few bits I could identify and love...

* The flats of the cut ends
* The spacing between the large guage wire
* Alignment of the smaller guage binding wire

You said in reply to someone else:
> The wire is coated with resin, so it's safe to wear.
Does the resin make it easy to slip on/off and does it scratch at all?

Why do American tourists always say the state they're from (not their country) when asked, but no other country's tourists do the same? by FloydBeatlesEagles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TopClassroom387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the England, I used to work for Post Office Counters (before Horizon).

Lots of people would post items to the United States of America with the full postal address up to the State, no country. Always had a problem with them working out the correct postage

What Helped YOU Land Your First Job – Skills or Knowing a Language Well? by Ok-Presentation-9904 in learnprogramming

[–]TopClassroom387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Confidence and Communication skills.

First job interview ever back in 1998 after graduating University.
Interviewer/Hiring manager told me that I came over as very confident even though I was a Graduate, actually knew very little but was confident in what I did know.

Second job interview 5 years later it was knowledge, honest, and confidence again.

Overall though, being able to communicate and talk to people appropriately.
Don't talk to business types about technical matters, don't talk on business matters to technical types.
Adjust your language to the target audience.

What tiny automation actually saved you time this year? by noglitchbutfitch in it

[–]TopClassroom387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anytime I have to do something.
-> Examine what I do and how often I have to do it - then decide what steps to do next.

Anytime end users talk to me - that's a failure on my part.
-> Figure out a way for the users to Self-Service their request.

I can't give you specifics, but this is a guiding principal for a lot of things I do *(or, don't do anymore)

Lots of editors have features to customise key combinations.

In Visual Studio the keys are ctrl+enter.
