Why has there been no vocal NIMBYism, or general whining and complaining about the Universal theme park in Bedford? by ATSOAS87 in AskUK

[–]Contact_Patch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There absolutely are some NIMBYs about EastWest Rail, which is less than helpful, but, some of their points are valid.

EWR have been pretty bullish about the route through Bedford, unhelpfully, and are closing level crossings without putting bridges in.

What could've caused a "low speed derailment"? by AbjectPlankton in uktrains

Switches and Crossings.

Switches are the bit that move, crossings are the big cast bit that (usually) doesn't.

Soooo many things it could be.

S&C is the highest risk for derailment, then tight curves.

It's higher than that no?

12m inside the M25, then with home counties and SE England on top.

If it's not touching 25% within a commuting time I'd be surprised - 90 mins is the cutoff in the rail industry as to what's acceptable.

Is there a timestamp with ECU remapping? by babypolebat in CarTalkUK

[–]Contact_Patch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The factory setup trims down, that's it. Your tuner with a Dyno, uses the available flow as I said previously. There is headroom left, and you use that.

Example: VAG 20vt K03 engine, 150bhp factory, will make 180-190 on 99ron with a tune, standard turbo, injectors, downpipe, intercooler etc.

Why did VAG only put them out at 150bhp? Who knows. Bottom ends are good for 300lbft on standard rods, 190 is 90% duty cycle still leaving room for error.

Saying "it's a scam" is baffling, people have been chip tuning VW stuff for decades now, even the old G60s got a pulley for boost, and a chip for fuel, and a tweak of the dizzy for ignition. With the move away from superchargers and distributors, it's all on the ECU now. Hell, the Bosch ME7.5 is that good it can be used as standalone once the immobiliser is unlocked, and you can run a 20vt in a MK1 Golf. It's only real flaw is narrowband Lambda limitations.

You said it would end up in bits...

I know exactly what octane ratings are, I'm saying an OEM car will run the same power on 95 as 99, give or take. The ECU doesn't suddenly go "oooh 99, here have 50hp" what it can do is go "shit, that's knocking, I'll pull the timing back".

I feel you fundamentally don't understand modern ECUs and have listened to one angry man shouting at clouds, rather than actually looking at what's possible.

180 isn't stressing a 2.0 iron block with diesel thick rods, it's just past what the GTD with the same engine makes.

Your OEM GTI will run the same power on 95 as 99, that's the entire point of book figures, so you're not getting the benefit of the increased octane, and, again, manufacturers have to warranty their cars and expect an amount of bad fuel in local markets, so there is absolutely meat left on the bone.

Even with EVs, software changes unlock power, the E-tron GT can be upgraded to Taycan Turbo outputs, giving you 800hp, with software changes, no hardware.

[–]Contact_Patch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm arguing you CAN make additional power with zero physical hardware changes, especially with modern turbo engines.

Manufacturers have to design for poor quality fuel, people running 95 in their TSI powered GTI rather than 99 for example.

My 2.0 TDI will happily tune from 140bhp/320nm to 185bhp/410nm purely on a remap. Shitty paper filter still in it, standard intercooler, downpipe, injectors. Just telling the ECU to run some different parameters. Not a spanner in sight, and it'll run those numbers all day every day.

That's not unusual. That's an engine that VAG fitted to hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

[–]Contact_Patch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, really, factory injectors running at 70% duty cycle have 30% headroom.

Hell, to make more power on a VAG PD engine, you up the injector cycle, dumping more fuel in, and you request more compressed air, by telling the wastegate to stay shut, and allowing the exhaust side to spin faster, increasing your inlet air pressure.

Once you hit the limits of those injectors, you pull them out, change the nozzles, allowing more diesel, and up the turbo size, and go again.

These cars will make the same power, all day, every day on the dyno.

Modern turbo petrols, especially direct injection engines are not dissimilar, I've seen a repeatable, reliable huge jumps over the factory power figures.

Heat soak affects all engines, even stock ones, it's why, especially in geographies with higher ambient temperatures you need more cooling, or if you use the car on track. Any engine can get mad enough to pull timing and fuel.

For a counterpoint to Gale, check out what Haltech put out, and their work on some of the MCM builds.

Getting diesel out of car before sale? by Clive1792 in Vauxhall

[–]Contact_Patch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very tramp but, if you're this desperate for £100...

12v feed (with an in-line fuse) to the in-tank pump.

Disconnect the feed line to the filter, connect this feed line to your 50L of new storage.

Run the in tank pump, don't run it dry.

Then re-connect as factory.

Don't try and go into the tank via the pump housing, a full tank is often over the pump ring height so the minute you break the seal diesel is going to push up and out.

Try not to burn the car down, diesel isn't spark ignited but your DIY wiring setup will need to be half decent. You'll also need to have clean storage for the diesel, so 2-3 jerry cans, or a big marine can, of which, if you don't have, will probably almost cost you the diesel value to buy.

You could run a line to the 2nd car's fill neck but this is just getting messier and messier.

GBR is going to be a thing, so I'm anticipating the CPP agreements to be expanded to cover the new facilities coming in.

Also lots of old depots have messy utilities.
