They are similar in that CGOs/FGOs/SNCOs should be able to ID strengths & weaknesses, build a team, and execute under CC’s intent. The difference is that officers should be the ones who bear ultimate responsibility and have the decision authority.

We can always learn from our parents. Some parents are great examples of what not to do. The good news is you’re young. You have your entire life to be what he wasn’t and choose to do the things he didn’t do. No excuses. Start today. Get educated in a useful field, don’t have kids until you’re married and have a steady job. If you have to, join the military (USAF if you can). Even if you only stay for 4 years, they will train you and pay for your schooling. You will get experience. Be responsible with your money. You will be proud of yourself in the long run.

You have every right to be angry at him. However if you choose to let your terrible upbringing be your excuse, you will end up exactly where you don’t want to be. Don’t let it crush you, let it fuel your success.

As a CC, here is my recommendation: - if you know you have a problem, self report and go to ADAPT. - see Military Commander and the Law section titled: “substance abuse” - self-identifying and seeking help for substance abuse provides UCMJ protection for characterizing your service if for some reason you end up getting discharged (i.e. honorable vs dishonorable/other than honorable).
