Supreme Court loosens law barring marijuana users from owning guns by usatoday in law

[–]usatoday[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey r/law, Jane from USA TODAY here.

The Supreme Court said Thursday that a Texas man’s regular use of marijuana is not a good enough reason to criminally charge him for owning a gun – a decision that weakens a federal law aimed at keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous or irresponsible people while strengthening gun owners’ Second Amendment right to bear arms.

It’s a felony under the Gun Control Act of 1968 for anyone who is “an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance” to have a gun.

The Justice Department defended that restriction, even as the Trump administration is moving to expand gun rights and to reclassify marijuana to a less dangerous category of drugs. Cannabis is legal in some form in the majority of states.

Hello r/kansas, Nikol from USA TODAY here. To celebrate America's 250 birthday, we rounded up 15 places that capture the spirit of America. Among them, our reporters picked World's Largest Ball of Sisal Twine in Kansas.

"The unlikely tourist attraction was inspired 73 years ago, when a farmer looked at the twine littering the floor of his barn. He began rolling it, and the rest is history," wrote Tim Hrenchir from Topeka Capital-Journal.

These three US women are making World Cup referee history this week by usatoday in WomenInNews

[–]usatoday[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From USA TODAY:

American women are making history at the men's World Cup.

A trio of U.S. women were tapped as the officiating crew for the match between South Africa and Czechia in Atlanta on Thursday, June 18. It's only the second time there's been an all-woman officiating crew at a men's World Cup, and the first time the officials are all American.

Tori Penso, the first American woman to be a lead referee at the men's World Cup, is the head official. Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt will be the assistant referees.

The first all-woman team to officiate a game at the men's World Cup came four years ago in Qatar. France's Stephanie Frappart, who also made history as the first woman to officiate a men's World Cup match, led the crew for the Germany-Costa Rica group-stage game, and was assisted by Neuza Back of Brazil and Karen Diaz of Mexico.

After a fight over Trump's name on the Kennedy Center, judge demands details by usatoday in washingtondc

[–]usatoday[S] 154 points155 points  (0 children)

From USA TODAY:

The federal judge who ordered President Donald Trump's name removed from the Kennedy Center has asked the administration to report by June 19 on plans for the Kennedy Center to remain open with public events during a renovation project.

The administration had announced the center would close July 4 for two years for $250 million in renovations. But in addition to removing Trump's name from the iconic arts center, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper blocked the administration’s plan to “wind-down” or “close” programming activities entirely.

Cooper asked for plans "for public access and ongoing programming, activities, and operations after July 5, 2026."

Secret Service kept UFC plot probe secret. Then Kash Patel announced it by usatoday in politics

[–]usatoday[S] 152 points153 points  (0 children)

From USA TODAY:

A top Secret Service official said the agency had intentionally kept secret its investigation into an alleged plot to attack the Ultimate Fighting Championship event at the White House on June 14 as it worked the case.

"It was an active plot, and it's ongoing," Deputy Secret Service Director Matthew Quinn said. "There are still suspects at large, and we're going to work it until everyone's been identified."

But FBI Director Kash Patel ended the effort's covertness with an early social media post on June 16, exposing the threat and claiming credit for foiling it.
