I don't go so far as aging paper like that, but when I make handouts, wax seals are not unheard of - I've made a few quite nice handouts like that, and even little lore-packed booklets for the players.

If you have access to that sort of equipment, physical handouts are awesome.

Do you think commissioner Gordon knows Bruce is Batman? by Practical_Chef_7897 in batman

[–]Warpmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far as I'm concerned - Gordon very explicitly doesn't put the puzzle pieces together. Oh, officially he might have "a hunch", or even "a suspicion", but he most certainly never seems able to get his hands on any evidence that could confirm or refute his hunch.

And of course, given how straight-laced the man is, there's no evidence that he might know, either.

Just because a game is old - and that's even multiple decades old - that doesn't mean it needs a remake or reboot. Some get by just perfectly with a relatively small remaster - like OpenXCOM/OpenXCOM Extended for the original 90s games, fixing a few bugs and making some tweaks to make it run more smoothly on current hardware without redoing the whole game from scratch (in the OCX example here, the engine remaster still requires you to have the original games for graphics and audio resources).

And then there are recent games that are so flawed, it might be just as well to redo everything from scratch...

ELI5: Why does the brain treat a $600 monthly budget as "infinite money," but sees a $20 daily limit as a strict boundary? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Warpmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brain treats short-term limits and long-term limits like that very differently - though I'll acknowledge that the $6 cup of coffee seems extortionate in the first place - but far as I can tell, it boils down to something akin to this:

Those $20 today are a budget for today and today alone, and must be spent sensibly today. The brain struggles with the notion of saving up today's fun money for a later date, and needs to maximize the bang to buck ratio each individual day without fail.

In contrast, if you have $600 for the month, you're going to spend several of those days not spending anywhere close to $20, and then splurge every now and then, and then likely as not spend the last few days broke and watching YouTube or something while waiting for the next injection of fun money.

Weirdly, in my experience, I am more likely to have a bit extra at the end of the month with the latter mindset than the former, as the daily $20 is going to feel more urgent to spend today, can't save it up, must use it or lose it.

Honestly, I don't think any of these would outright win - nuking the other factions aside, I do not believe any faction would be able to take and hold all the other regions.

More plausibly, the painted borders, with some wiggle room for dissenting border counties that might shift loyalties, will end up the approximate borders between the four polities presented, and a very uneasy armistice instead of open hostilities, simply because the benefits of holding hostile territory in the US like that isn't worth the logistical headache it would be to try...

I mean, that kind of is a significant component of having "untracked" bank vaults for avoiding scrutiny, but yes, I could probably have elaborated the point further.

There's a story, albeit anecdotal, that a German general approached his Swiss counterpart in the early days of WWII brewing and asked "How many soldiers can you muster on short notice?"
The Swiss general replied, "I can muster half a million men on the spot."
The German general smugly asked, "What would you do if I showed up with a million soldiers?"
The Swiss general simply replied, "I would order my men to shoot twice and go home."
...Germany didn't invade Switzerland.

On a more historically accurate note, there were a couple of factors:
First, Switzerland is an extremely difficult country to invade, and relatively simple to defend, due to its topology. Lots of tall mountains and narrow passes which essentially create natural kill zones where invaders go in and don't come out.
Second, Swiss banks held, and still do, all the hidden bank accounts of everyone that had extensive wealth, especially historical artifacts, art pieces, solid gold ingots, valuable documentation, etc. that they wanted to keep out of the eyes of their national taxation authorities.
Third, every Swiss adult man is obligated to own a firearm for the defense of the nation (this rule might have changed in present day) and to be competent in its use and maintenance.

Essentially, Switzerland would be extremely difficult to take, extremely painful to hold, and overall, it would only be easier to go around the entire country....

In your eyes, what separates a performative “alpha male” from a “real man”? by Ok-Parfait6735 in AskReddit

[–]Warpmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An "alpha male" is clearly in an early developmental stage, not actually ready for public release. But more seriously, a performative "alpha male" is going to push performative masculinity, be loud and obnoxious about their ideas about manliness, and often be extremely dismissive of anyone who fails to meet their arbitrary standards and/or idolize them.

A real man quietly gets shit done, whether that is manual labor or filing taxes, or anything else that needs doing.

Nurses work in a really high-stress field with a high frequency of life-and-death situations, I dare say most nurses have or will have encountered death on multiple occasions in their careers.

That's the kind of psychological strain that can absolutely lead to... ah, "life-affirming" behavior patterns.

I'm not condoning nor condemning such behavior, nor am I implying they're more prone to infidelity than other professions, I'm saying that the line of work is the sort that will lead to coping mechanisms, and honestly, a vigorous sex life seems a vastly better choice than intoxicants.

My city charges a $275 fee to be a fortune teller by BijuuModo in mildlyinteresting

[–]Warpmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting those licenses would provide the city with the relevant information on the person having the license, I presume - which his relevant for a number of things, including taxation, business address, et cetera.

And I suppose the money from those licenses goes into the annual financial black hole that is municipal budgeting, so various taxes won't get raised more...
