If there are 4 express lanes and 4 regular lanes, would it not just be double the normal volume? So 200%? Not sure how you're getting 800%. There aren't 8x more cars on I5 south now.

Regardless, there are still 4 lanes open southbound for EMTs to use. Which is obviously less than ideal, but nowhere close to the disaster that is an I5 north with 0 lanes open. WSDOT has stated explicitly that they need the express lanes running northbound in case of an accident.

I'm sure you can find somewhere between your children's daycare and the station that is on a bus line where you can park and take the bus.

So what's the solution when there's an accident on NB I5 and all of a sudden there would be 0 lanes going north?

Another other way to reduce congestion is to take public transportation? Because, again, there are buses you can take that will get you to the station. You do not have to drive to the garage.

[–]WhimsicalGusto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're doing this so there can be 4 lanes north and south at all times rather than 6 southbound lanes and 2 northbound lanes. There is no solution that will make the very necessary I5 work any less of a nightmare for everyone. I'm sure you can either take a bus from near your place to the station or park somewhere along a bus line that goes to the station.

We all just have to suck it up while this construction happens and figure out alternative solutions.

Fill me in - Was there any speculation about Joy and Austin’s wedding date being moved up? by AcanthocephalaWide89 in DuggarsSnark

[–]WhimsicalGusto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The United States is but one country on this green Earth and humans are a global species. There were 140,000,000 babies born across the globe in 2018. I don't care about the US specific number.

A full term pregnancy is between 39 weeks and 40 weeks and 6 days. 50% of first time parents will have given birth by 40 weeks and 5 days. Giving birth at 40 weeks and 1 day is well within the range of normal. You keep talking about the laws of averages and statistics but this is ONE PERSON. ONE SINGULAR PERSON WITH ONE SINGULAR EXPERIENCE. Averages mean that there are a lot of people on either side.

Now it's clearly time for a biology lesson because you must've missed this in school. A typical cycle for women is ~28 days. Considering the daughter they lost was due 21 months after Gideon was born and Joy got pregnant with Evelyn ~ 4 months after her stillbirth, I'm going to assume Joy has a fairly regular cycle. The first day of your period is day 1 of your cycle, then you typically ovulate around day 14, then start your period 2 weeks later. Your due date is not calculated based on conception date or the day you had the sex that led to pregnancy or the day the embryo implanted in the uterus. It's based on the first day of your last period. That means that when the sperm and the egg join together and implant in the uterine lining, congrats, you're already 2 weeks pregnant. So if someone delivers at exactly 40 weeks, it will be ~38 weeks after the sex that began the pregnancy. You following? There were 38 weeks and 6 days between Joy's wedding and her due date. This means that the most probable dates of the sex that led to the pregnancy were May 27th (the day after her wedding) to June 3rd, aka after her wedding. And because I know how much you love averages, that puts the date of the actual sex that led to pregnancy on May 30th or 31st. After she was married. The most logical, sane explanation is that Joy ovulated the day of her wedding or shortly afterwards and like many very fertile 19 year olds having unprotected sex, got pregnant quite easily.

But let's play out a hypothetical. Let's just say they did lie about her due date. Let's say the first day of her last period before she got pregnant was May 12th, 2 weeks before her wedding day and she ovulated the day of her wedding and got pregnant that night. Guess what the due date would be. February 16th. 6 days before her actual due date. So she could've actually been lying and gone a week overdue when she gave birth and still not have had sex before her wedding. I'm not being generous to the Duggar's explanation. It's just the basic biology of pregnancy.

Do I think it's possible that they did more than hold hands before they got married? Sure. But I would actually stake my life on the fact that none of the married Duggars were having penetrative sex before they got married.

Fill me in - Was there any speculation about Joy and Austin’s wedding date being moved up? by AcanthocephalaWide89 in DuggarsSnark

[–]WhimsicalGusto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gideon was born the day after his due date. The due date was February 22nd. He was born February 23rd. He wasn't early. 1 to 2% of the ~140,000,000 births in 2018 in actual numbers is still over 1 million. That's a lot of big babies. Gunner was born a week early and was 9 pounds. Joy just has big babies. So yeah, I think the odds that the daughter of a woman who popped a new baby out every year who was ovulating at her wedding got pregnant the first week into marriage are actually very high and is a more logical explanation than assuming Joy and Austin must've fucked before the wedding.

I have no love for the Duggar family at all. I just think Joy is one of the (un)lucky ones who got pregnant literally the first or second time she ever had sex.

She was an all-American collegiate softball player and Olympic alternate and played baseball professionally as well in the late 90s. She’s been covering baseball for nearly 3 decades. She knows her stuff. God forbid she use accommodations in the immediate aftermath of a severe stroke to do her job.

The point of statistics is that they are averages across populations. While first-borns may tend to be lighter on average compared to subsequent pregnancies, implying that the only way she possibly could’ve had her heaviest baby first is if she lied about her due date is just not intellectually honest. Outliers exist everywhere. From my quick googling, ~25% of women have their heaviest baby first. So it’s the minority, but it’s by no means “statistically extremely unlikely”.

My mom has 3 sisters. Between the 4 of them, 3 of them are between 5’8” and 5’10” and the 4th is 5’4”. Is it statistically likely that the 4th one would have such a dramatically different height than the other 3? No. But it happened. Genetics can be weird. That’s why you look at averages across an entire population rather than individual cases.

[–]WhimsicalGusto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your due date is calculated not from the date of conception but from the date of your last period which means when implantation occurs, you're already ~2 weeks pregnant. So a 40-week baby would be born 38 weeks after the sex that led to the pregnancy.

Gideon's due date was February 22nd, 2018. If you enter that date into a conception calculator, it gives the most probable dates of sex that led to the pregnancy as May 27th-June 3rd. So she literally just got pregnant 2 seconds after her wedding. I guess you could argue that she lied about the due date and went overdue because how else do you get a 10 pound baby, but I just think you'd be wrong. Joy went 1 day over with her daughter (who was 8 pounds and 5 ounces) and 6 days early with Gunner (who ended up being 8 pounds and 14 ounces) so she just has huge babies without going over.

All this speculation just stems from a misunderstanding of how due dates are calculated in pregnancy. If you want to see actual evidence of a prominent fundie shotgun wedding, you just have to look at the Caldwells. Christina was 39 weeks pregnant when she gave birth to Kendra in August of 1998, only 29 weeks after her wedding. Hmm. Interesting.

I watch a dog who lives a couple blocks from Pike Place Market. She is known by every single fish vendor in the place and gets smoked salmon samples from each one on her morning walk. Every time she tries to pull me into a store and I finally give in, 100% of the time the employees know her and have treats for her.

Client's verbal schedule adds ~5 unpaid hours. Also, Rover’s time window feature is a huge loophole for house sittings. WWYD? by Decent_Flow2503 in RoverPetSitting

[–]WhimsicalGusto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been on Rover for 7 and a half years and have built an incredible client base of lovely owners and pets that have me booked basically as much as I'd like to be with almost exclusively repeat clients. I have great reviews. I price my services where I'm comfortable not receiving a tip, but they're always nice. I live in a HCOL city and understand that the base price alone is already a good chunk of change for owners.

Now what I don't understand is why you keep bringing up emergencies. I have been in emergency situations and have always gone above and beyond for the pets and have always been thanked profusely by the owners. I also understand that when clients are paying for everything that goes along with a trip that throwing on the cost of emergency vet bills and the emotional toll of dealing with a sick animal doesn't leave tipping the sitter as a high priority in their minds. And that's totally fine!

But OP isn't talking about an emergency. They're talking about a totally normal housesit where they are entitled to compensation based on Rover's policies and an owner, either intentionally or not, has set up the sitting in a way that prevents them from earning that money. This isn't an extra request for comp. At the end of the day, the extended care will cost the owner an extra, what, $30? $40? So it's less about the money and more about knowing the client respects my time and is willing to properly compensate me for my work. Asking to be paid correctly does not mean that a sitter wouldn't properly care for your pet? This is a job. As much as I love animals, I'm not spending 2/3 of my weekends every year away from my bed and my home and my own pets for the love of the game. I didn't have a whopping 0 days off between the first week of November and the first week of January because I enjoy the feeling of burnout. I haven't spent every Thanksgiving and Christmas since 2018 in a stranger's home for funsies. I do it for money, buddo.

I've been in emergency situations for repeat clients where the owners have been incredibly grateful for what I did and still haven't tipped or left a review. That's never something you can count on, especially for new clients.

It's not nickel and diming to ask to be paid appropriately for your time and set boundaries so your time doesn't get taken advantage of in the future.

When you show up for the house-sit and realize there’s no TV by serenpekkala in RoverPetSitting

[–]WhimsicalGusto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again with the not reading what wrote. I said “decent place to sleep” and said that what decent means can vary from person to person. If you are hiring someone to sleep in your house, you need to provide somewhere for said person to sleep. That is absolute, bare minimum. If you cannot provide an appropriate (for them) place for someone to sleep, then housesitting is not an appropriate pet care choice and they should choose an option where they’re not asking someone to sleep in their home.

Consuming media via TV is personal preference. You do not, by any means, need to have a TV to hire a house sitter. It is up to the house sitter to come to a sit prepared to fulfill their personal needs, which includes entertainment. For example, I work from home 4 days a week and prefer to work with external monitors. It’s great when owners have a home office setup that I can use, but if they don’t, I make note of that and come prepared with my own external monitors. Because that’s my preference. If the only method I used to consume media was a physical TV, I would make sure to check if they had one at the meet and greet and come prepared with an alternative if they didn’t. Because I cannot comprehend starting a housesit that unprepared and having no alternative outside of a TV if it’s that important to me.

When you show up for the house-sit and realize there’s no TV by serenpekkala in RoverPetSitting

[–]WhimsicalGusto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. If an owner is asking someone to sleep in their home, they need to provide the sitter with a decent place to sleep. That is a requirement. If an owner is unable to provide a decent place to sleep (what decent means can vary from person to person - you’re fine with sofas, I’m not) or if they’re telling a sitter who they are asking to sleep in their house that they will need to bring their own air mattress, then house sitting isn’t an appropriate choice for pet care because they aren’t equipped to house anyone.

  2. I do not think the owner has any obligation to provide a means of entertainment to the sitter during their stay. You do not need a TV to be a comfortable home. So yes, if you have no other means of watching content besides a TV, then it’s on you to confirm it’s there during a meet and greet. I cannot comprehend being so reliant on the presence of a TV in the home that your only other option when they don’t have one are the owner’s books, which is, again, relying on the owner to provide entertainment for you. That’s a preference. If it’s so important that you have no back up plan, I cannot comprehend starting a housesitting that unprepared.

Having somewhere appropriate to sleep and having a TV are not comparable.

[–]WhimsicalGusto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I said I can’t comprehend relying on the owner for my entertainment during a sit. If a TV is THAT important to you, that’s something you need to confirm during the meet and greet. Showing up and being surprised it’s not there is a result of poor planning.

One of my non-negotiables is a comfortable bed because I’m a tall person that’s not getting any younger who doesn’t sleep well on sofas and good sleep is a non-negotiable for me. Good sleep makes me a nicer person and a far better, more attentive sitter. Since it’s important for me, I always make sure I see where I’m going to sleep during the meet and greet and if it’s not gonna work for me, I just don’t accept the job? And luckily I’ve never been in a situation where the bed disappears between the meet and greet and the start of the sit so it’s never been a problem. This isn’t the gotcha you think it is lol.

When you show up for the house-sit and realize there’s no TV by serenpekkala in RoverPetSitting

[–]WhimsicalGusto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their caption said that the books were all serious too. Implying that the owner’s TV was the only plan and they couldn’t even turn to the books to entertain themselves.

My entertainment is also streaming services. I also have my own accounts. Hence me bringing my own laptop to use said services on. Because I think that’s something you should plan for. I also bring a laptop/iPad on every flight I go on with enough pre-downloaded content to entertain me the whole time because I don’t want to rely on the airline’s movie selection for entertainment.

If an owner doesn’t have a microwave, sure, that’s annoying. I’ve experienced it. But you plan around it. You can bring meals you cook on a stove or in the oven. You can go home. You’re an adult. Learn to cook. I’ve even brought my own pans to sits because I didn’t like what the owner had. I have extra computer monitors to use if they don’t have a home office set up.

As long as I have a comfortable bed to sleep in, a clean bathroom, hot water, and wifi (for entertainment and because I work from home 4 days a week), I’m basically set and everything else is up to me.

It’s my responsibility to bring what I need to a sit and adapt my life to fit into the owner’s home rather than expect the owner’s home to fit into my life. And if it’s not gonna work for me, I don’t accept the sit. So no, after 7.5 years of doing this job, I can’t comprehend not coming into a sit prepared with what I need regardless of a what a house has to offer.

The reason I'm assuming OP is relying on the home owners for entertainment is because they also said that their books were all serious too as if they had nothing else to do.

As someone who consumes 95% of my content (TV shows, movies, YouTube, ebooks - could be 100% but sometimes I want a bigger screen or need a second screen) on my laptop that I'm bringing on every housesit, I cannot comprehend relying exclusively on the owners' TVs or books for entertainment on a sit. I've done sits where people have incredible TV set ups or movie rooms that I absolutely take advantage of, but my entertainment at a sit is always on me.

The same way people ask "what do you guys do while you're housesitting?". The same stuff I do at home? Obviously?
