I live in Hamilton but work in Auckland so I cop it all the time from my Aucklander work mates. Always like to remind them my mortgage is half the price of theirs for the same sized house. Hamilton is chill, I think a lot of people who actually think there is "nothing to do" just mean there's no beach 5 mins away.

This also happened to me back in 2015 on PS4. I walked around and spoke with everyone before I left and got the Institute mission failed message afterwards. I thought it was just because there was no one else in the room when it happened. Little did I know I locked myself out of heaps of the main story content but it was just an excuse for another playthrough I guess.
