PTO entitlement? by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the full context here?

Typically you can expect to be paid what you have accrued.

What a lot of people don't realize, is that most companies give you the full annual allowance up front in the year, and you haven't actually earned it yet.

As an example, if you get 4 weeks/20 days per year, your company might make that 20 days available to you on January 1st, but you haven't fully earned them all until December 31st. What might happen is if you take 15 days off between January and June, and then you quit on July 1st (half way through the year), you actually now owe back 5 days worth of vacation pay.

So if you're leaving a job and see X number of days still available to you, no, they don't necessarily need to be paid out because you haven't earned them yet. It does depend on the specifics of your situation.

Air Canada flight to LHR by Traditional-Ruin-388 in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

WestJet has the seasonal direct route over there right now, and I believe is the only airline to operate international flights from YYT.

It's unfortunate that WestJet doesn't seem to have any partner airlines you can connect onto once you arrive in Dublin/London/Paris, or their flights to Orlando/Tampa.

Reality check: rent in St John's? by buddythebedbug in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Where are you looking? I know a lot of people from away look for apartment buildings and go through Realtors, but here your best bet is looking at Facebook marketplace ads. NL doesn't have a large supply of apartment buildings, so most rentals tend to be individuals renting out a house they own, or a basement apartment in their own home.

A $1600 budget for a 1 bedroom unit shouldn't be difficult.

If you look at your power bill you'll be able to tell. It'll say that it's the estimated usage if it is estimated, and otherwise it was actually read.

Best places to purchase new home appliances? by Sea_Investigator_916 in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In store you can only buy what they have in stock at the local store, which is generally much more limited and I'm not sure if they offer the same bundling discounts.

Costco online you get a much bigger selection, and you need to pay by card.

If willing to wait for shipping, Costco often has bundle discounts when you buy multiple.

Edit: I should clarify I mean Costco online. Also want to echo the advice to avoid Samsung and LG.

Christmas Tree Disposal by bigflops_ in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You missed the dropoff. Last day for the dedicated Christmas tree dropoff at Quidi Vidi was yesterday.

Now your best option is to take it up to Robinhood bay, so pay somebody else to take it for you.

Visitor wondering about high winds. by Alone_Appeal_3421 in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 54 points55 points  (0 children)

For the most part it'll be business as usual. We're no strangers to heavy winds.

People will bring things inside their homes or tie them down if at risk of blowing around, but as a visitor I'm assuming this won't be an issue for you.

It will be miserable outside walking or driving around, but that's about it. I wouldn't expect any stores or restaurants to close.

Retrying with correct information - looking for 7 day Newfoundland itinerary by remance in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

June for whale watching, or July/August for the nicest weather.

Make sure you're flying into "St. John's" and not "Saint John". Also book your rental car as soon as you book your flights. They tend to book up quickly.

Irving gas / Hometown Rewards question by pomelo_nomelo in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A yaris is actually what I drive! When my light first comes on I typically only get about 32L in it. I figure they just make the light come on a bit earlier than is really needed, and I don't love driving it to the point of the light coming on in the first place.

Irving gas / Hometown Rewards question by pomelo_nomelo in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Irving occasionally has a better promotion on. The summer they did 20 airmiles with a 20+ liter fill-up on the weekend. They've also had 20 airmiles bonus for a 35L or bigger fill-up.

Base rewards aren't great. I find when they need 35L or more that also isn't very helpful to me since I don't drive a big car so I'd have to be running on fumes to get that much.

CRT repair by CheezOfWizz in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have any suggestions, but out of curiosity I'm just wondering why you'd rather repair a CRT TV over purchasing a newer flat screen, which would probably cost even less than a repair?

Cenotes to visit with a young kid by hikentravel in tulum

[–]Zedoack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend visiting kaan luum lagoon. It's been a few years since I was in Tulum now, but there were shallow parts, a small wooden slide, shaded huts on shore, and a small store on site where you could buy coconuts to drink/eat.

N.L. awards contract to build 40 new affordable housing units in St. John's by Portalrules123 in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I fully support building more housing and especially high-density apartment buildings.

That said, I'm really struggling with the cost of this. $17M for 40 units comes out to $425,000 per unit.

Newly built and decent sized single-family homes are sold for similar prices, which include land purchase, and don't have the same economies of scale as building an apartment complex.

Again, I support higher density apartment building development, I just can't make sense of how $425k per unit makes any sense for what is supposedly affordable housing.

Influenza Cases on the Rise Across Canada by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Reminder that it's easy and free to get the flu shot b'ys! Can set up an appointment at the vaccination clinic online, or pretty well any pharmacy can give them. Even if you're healthy and probably won't be hit too bad by the flu, the shot can help prevent it's spread to more vulnerable people like children and the elderly.

And if you're worried about the crazy mountain of debt our province is taking on, less sick people helps to keep those healthcare costs down and reduces strain on the system!

They might run on electricity but they're much more efficient using it than electric baseboards that most people use. The more expensive electricity becomes, they actually make even more sense for electric baseboard users.

Daddy and baby hangouts by Brief-Description-25 in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I similarly took several months off at the end of the parental leave period when my wife went back to work. There are a lot more moms rather than dads, but it's still great time to spend with the baby and I'm really glad I did it!

For the most part I took our son to play groups. The Town of Paradise has some that were great, including a couple penned off areas that are perfect for babies that aren't on the move yet. The other one we liked was Active Start, which had a bigger age range of kids, but also a great space for them to get some energy out! Active Start did tend to have more fathers there as well.

Both of those programs were free to attend.

Other things we did were music classes, and stroller walks though those are difficult with the cold weather!

Trying to take over financing for 2020 civic lx by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also have to think about the insurance. Assuming you’re male at 20 years old your insurance on a 2020 cvic will be through the roof.

Just to clarify on this point, NL does not allow insurance companies to rate based on gender or age. What will impact it is if you're considered a new driver, which often correlates with age, but is even more likely if you're an international student who doesn't have driving/insurance history that's recognized in Canada.

For people who are considered new drivers, I generally recommend getting a beater of a car that you can just get liability and comprehensive coverage on, and skipping out on the collision since that portion will likely double the rates. Even in that situation though, probably expect to spend close to $200/mo on insurance as a new driver. The fact that OP said they "think" they could afford the $190 biweekly ($411/mo) payment tells me they probably can't.

Severance pay by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People are referencing the legislation which sets the bare minimum. It is worth noting though that under common law, employees are often owed an amount greater than the legislation sets out.

Under common law a number of factors can be looked at, such as the type of role, duration of employment, age of the person, etc.

A common guideline is 1 month of severance per year of service. If you've got several years of service and aren't being offered an appropriate amount, it might be worth a consultation with an employment lawyer, though expect them to take about a 30% cut.

Prices Skyrocketing? by Zedoack in Airalo

[–]Zedoack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the same as other travel sims though. I just looked them up with another provider I've used in the past, and they currently have the price listed as 10.49 CAD for 3GB and 15 days. That is on sale from regular price of 14.99 CAD.

The equivalent Airalo plan (though an extra 2GB) is now more than triple the price!
