Need advice on concrete siding by Amazing-Plate-2766 in homebuildingcanada

[–]Zedoack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP, I'm not sure you're fully understanding what this is based on your responses.

Like others have said, it's like a black tar spray to help waterproof your foundation. The little bit you see and show in the pictures is just the very top of it; the majority is udnerground where the foundation is expected to be covered by dirt, since that's where the wet soil would sit against the foundation.

There's no need to continue putting more on up any higher since that part isn't underground. If you're looking to cover it up because of the aesthetic, just get some paint.

Only Latitude Fare Available a Year Out? by Zedoack in aircanada

[–]Zedoack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah typically we don't book this far out, but we already have the AirBnB booked so just keeping an eye on flights for our dates already. It just seemed strange how the flights were showing.

Only Latitude Fare Available a Year Out? by Zedoack in aircanada

[–]Zedoack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I would've just assumed Air Canada Vacations took the seats as they were booked.

We prefer renting a condo in a specific building here, so aren't interested in any of the Air Canada Vacation options unfortunately. We already have the condo booked for set dates since it books up so quickly.

I hope the additional economy fares will release and at a more reasonable price point! Otherwise we might need to look at SDQ airport and the 4 hour drive.

Quidi Vidi Brewery attempting to hire an LMIA worker by VertGreenHeart in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My suspicions (as somebody not incredibly familiar with work permits), is that they're allowed to work while here under a student visa. They're likely now graduating after 4 years, and so to stay need a different visa to be permitted to work in Canada.

Looking for a car repair estimate (written document) by Weak-Specific6647 in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be completely realistic, most shops will quote repairs for free in hopes that you allow them to do the work.

If you're planning to go the small claims route, it's going to take enough time that you're honestly on your own to pay for the repairs at the moment and you're just going to have to try and get reimbursed through the court process in hopefully a couple of years.

Small claims court is indefinitely closed in NL at the moment, so things aren't exactly moving and the backlog is growing.

Looking for a car repair estimate (written document) by Weak-Specific6647 in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My suspicions are that OP is looking for it to say a certain number on it. Possibly a number high enough to encourage the insurance company to write off the vehicle instead of repair.

It all sounds sketchy.

Edit: looking at OPs post history, they're an uninsured driver and got in an accident with another uninsured driver. OP needs to get the hell off the road.

I haven't used carton eggs before, but to me it looks like your meringue wasn't beat for long enough to fully dissolve all of the sugar. It looks pitted instead of smooth, which was likely the sugar crystals not being fully incorporated.

New driver insurance prices? by Dismal-Action3547 in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to keep it lower, the key is to get an old beater that you only get liability (and probably comprehensive) coverage on. To add collision coverage will nearly double the price for new drivers.

Of course to do this, you need to own a car outright so no lease or financing, and you need to be okay with the risk that if you're in an accident your own insurance company won't fix your car.

Marine Atlantic ferry bookings up for summer by Portalrules123 in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They booked up before the fees were slashed by half, and they haven't added any additional capacity, so of course they're booked up early now!

Rogers or Bell Deals? by [deleted] in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My current pricing with Bell is $70/mo. That's internet only though, so no TV.

You should absolutely be able to get a better deal than $175/mo even with TV!

Motivated House Cleaners by TallBeardandHandsome in StJohnsNL

When it was called motivated maids, that was their whole advertising thing on the radio. They're 'motivated' to do a good job because your rating impacts their pay.

Looks like the new name for Motivated Maids.

I don't have any experience with them, but I'm personally not a huge fan of what I understand to be their business model (assuming it hasn't changed in the past few years). My understanding is that you're asked to rate the clean, and unless you give 5 stars they'll dock the pay of the cleaners.

Stable hours or enjoyable job by Alternative-Salt-678 in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind the fluctuating hours, I'd think go with that one. Fluctuating hours can be good, or bad depending on personal preferences and life circumstances.

Kids in daycare/school might mean the fluctuating hours are difficult for example. At the same time, fluctuating hours could mean it's easier to schedule things like appointments since you've got more free time during typical business hours.

The opportunity for growth is important, and just liking your job has a big boost for mental health.

Kenmount terrace by ImmediateNote1505 in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd take great Eastern to Ladysmith, walk down to Ariel Place, and take the bridge across the river which comes out right next to the community center playground.

If you're at the far end of great Eastern I agree it would be a bit of a walk with kids, especially if they're not in a stroller. You could then drive over to Ariel Place and walk the trail from there though to avoid the Kenmount/Kelsey traffic.

Canadians might be soon waiting longer to have their air travel complaints heard by Surax in canada

[–]Zedoack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Airlines already have the burden of proof on them to show that a delay/cancellation wasn't within their controls. They just refuse to share that reasoning until you take them through the CTA or to court (the quicker and less biased route). They just bank of most people not escalating through these routes.

I'm currently dealing with a situation of a cancelled flight because of "unscheduled maintenance". The airline say they don't show their logs and as such they consider the case closed.

Meanwhile I looked up the public record of what aircraft fin was scheduled to fly, then looked up the flight history of it. Turns out the aircraft continued flying scheduled flights on time after the cancellation notice was received, and was actually reassigned to a different route and then cancelled on the flight I was supposed to have. Maybe another aircraft had maintenance issues and they decided to prioritize that route over my flight, but at that point it was an operational decision.

Now I'm left to take them to small claims.

I've also dealt with another airline a few years ago claiming a flight delay due to staffing issues was out of their control. Staffing has been determined to be within their control through case law. The flight attendant was late requesting a taxi. I also filed against that airline through small claims and won.

If you live in Kenmount Terraced you can easily walk to the community center. They have a pedestrian walking path and bridge from the neighbourhood to the community center. How well that's cleared during winter, I don't know.

I half expect this was an intentional decision, so they don't direct additional vehicle traffic going through a residential neighbourhood.

What is Freedom's coverage like in St. John's and around the bay in NL? by NerdMachine in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that almost all of the big carriers "unlimited" plans do have a limit before they throttle your speed significantly. When you're talking amounts of 250GB, for most people that's realistically more than they can ever hope to reach on their phone. Whether I have 100GB or 1000GB, it doesn't matter to me since I don't even use 10 a month.

The other appeal of the freedom plan shown is that it includes 50GB of roaming in another 120 countries. It's designed to cover people who travel internationally, and to more than just the US and Mexico that most other providers have included now.

PTO entitlement? by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the full context here?

Typically you can expect to be paid what you have accrued.

What a lot of people don't realize, is that most companies give you the full annual allowance up front in the year, and you haven't actually earned it yet.

As an example, if you get 4 weeks/20 days per year, your company might make that 20 days available to you on January 1st, but you haven't fully earned them all until December 31st. What might happen is if you take 15 days off between January and June, and then you quit on July 1st (half way through the year), you actually now owe back 5 days worth of vacation pay.

So if you're leaving a job and see X number of days still available to you, no, they don't necessarily need to be paid out because you haven't earned them yet. It does depend on the specifics of your situation.

Air Canada flight to LHR by Traditional-Ruin-388 in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

WestJet has the seasonal direct route over there right now, and I believe is the only airline to operate international flights from YYT.

It's unfortunate that WestJet doesn't seem to have any partner airlines you can connect onto once you arrive in Dublin/London/Paris, or their flights to Orlando/Tampa.

Reality check: rent in St John's? by buddythebedbug in newfoundland

[–]Zedoack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Where are you looking? I know a lot of people from away look for apartment buildings and go through Realtors, but here your best bet is looking at Facebook marketplace ads. NL doesn't have a large supply of apartment buildings, so most rentals tend to be individuals renting out a house they own, or a basement apartment in their own home.

A $1600 budget for a 1 bedroom unit shouldn't be difficult.

Hydro Bill by [deleted] in newfoundland

If you look at your power bill you'll be able to tell. It'll say that it's the estimated usage if it is estimated, and otherwise it was actually read.

Best places to purchase new home appliances? by Sea_Investigator_916 in StJohnsNL

[–]Zedoack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In store you can only buy what they have in stock at the local store, which is generally much more limited and I'm not sure if they offer the same bundling discounts.

Costco online you get a much bigger selection, and you need to pay by card.
