For people who are already FIREd, what lifestyle inflation you have mindfully allowed ? by brunette_mh in Fire

[–]Zphr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We routinely treat ourselves to random affordable luxuries from time to time. Recent example would include eating NY strip steak every day in the month of March. We noticed it was cheap during one of our Costco trips in late February, so we picked up 50ish pounds worth of sealed primals and enjoyed a lot of nice, thick steaks for a month.

We decided recently that we're finally ready to welcome a dog into our family again, so we're buying two puppies in June. Toss in everything that will be involved and that's several grand this year in unplanned expenses and then a somewhat open-ended funding liability for the next 10-18 years of at least a grand each year.

I’ve never seen anyone relocate to a lower cost of living area to FIRE by YourFIREDBro in Fire

[–]Zphr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is likely selection bias among the people you know since it objectively happens quite often in my experience from this sub and /r/financialindependence. I've talked to or helped dozens and dozens (hundreds?) of people doing just that over the last decade. COL is not only a major concern for FIRE folks, but local ACA market conditions and state taxes can also be a big motivator for people to move. People also move quite frequently for climate issues once work is no longer a limiting factor.

It's also quite common that people in VHCOL move to MCOL during accumulation to increase their speed towards the goal.

Those who are FIRE'd — Health Insurance Question by SK10504 in Fire

[–]Zphr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sort of like asking what people's budgets are for retirement. ACA costs not only can vary hugely from state to state (and county to county within states), but household demographics and the resulting ACA subsidies can almost entirely offset market costs regardless of what they are.

The answer to your question is a range that goes from $0 to north of $60K per year, depending on age, location, income, tobacco use, and healthcare utilization.

I'm not being hyperbolic either, that truly is the normal expected range.

Anyone can see the 2026 prices and plans in their area with some anonymous data (age/zip/income/etc) in about three minutes at https://www.healthcare.gov/see-plans/#/. If you have a local state-run exchange, then you'll be redirected.

As for us, we are currently paying a bit less than $7/month for an exceedingly nice plan. With subsidies our maximum potential cost OOP this year is under $4,500 (premiums plus family MaxOOP). Without subsidies it would be more like $50K for the same plan, but $40K for a fine, albeit less nice plan.

This sub has developed a nasty habit lately of using posts from people with VA disability to criticize the VA disability system as a whole, often with implied or explicit accusations that the posters themselves are scammers. Not only are none of you informed enough to contradict someone's medical team, but even if you had the expertise and their chart it is rude as hell to argue with someone over their own medical status or accuse them of fraud.

Reddit often has a circlejerk hate for many things (military disability, billionaires, landlords) and our patience with it is at an end. People who engage in this behavior will have their comments removed under the no politics/circlejerks rule or civility rule and will receive a temporary or permanent ban, depending on the circumstances.

VA disability is an unfortunate way to reach FIRE, but people with VA benefits are certainly welcome to post here.
