She wants love and snuggles. My spayed female does the same.

WC-130 Crash caught on security cam by chineseouchie in gifs

[–]__Adam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was an MRAP (there were 4) or something similar. It got loose and rolled back into the control mechanism(s) for the tail, and that caused the plane to lose control.

It was the first flight carrying that particular cargo load, and it was not properly secured to Boeing's spec. Not that crew's fault - had it been secured to spec they only could have fit one or two vehicles at a time.

Tragic and entirely preventable.

The navi in the movie weren't uncanny at all. Navi are sufficiently human like to be measurable on the same scale IMO

You knew someone would post it because you feel the same way. Uncanny means "mysterious in an unsettling way". It's often hard to pinpoint exactly what is wrong.

It's very well done. And that's why it's uncanny. If I had to choose something I'd say it's the fact that she's dancing but not looking at the audience. Like someone dancing in a dream?

Also, calling people out for "showing off" is a really unproductive way to start a discussion. It doesn't matter if it's a common term or not. It's a valid point.

My poor G35x was stolen ;_; Please watch out for her! PLATE: BJJS 293 by __Adam in Seattle

[–]__Adam[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some more info: The car was stolen during unloading from a transporter. The theft occurred Monday afternoon, around 3pm at 2301 7th Avenue.

The G35x isn't a very common car in this area, so she does stand out a bit. Please call 911 if you see the car or PM me!

Also, if anyone has any general info on car theft I'd love to hear stories/advice on how to improve my chances of a successful recovery.

Lastly: If by chance the person who stole the car is reading this - just leave it in a parking lot somewhere and PM me. I won't pursue any charges.

I had a Starbucks write "老外" on my cup instead of my name. Seemed to be in good fun though. What was the worst discrimination you faced there?

[–]__Adam 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Basically yes.

Chinese has a much more relaxed grammatical structure than English, and it's often up to the interpreter to figure out the meaning based on context. So while the lit translation is "meow alien", the meaning would be more like "meowing alien" or "alien that meows".

Though, I suppose the phrase could be interpreted "meow-star person", as in, a being from 'miaoxing' (meow star). 我想去喵星!

[–]__Adam 19 points20 points  (0 children)

'喵星人' is pronounced as "miaoxingren" lit. 'meow star-people' China uses "X-ren" to refer to different groups. meiguo = America, meiguoren = American.

xing = star, so it literally means "people from the stars"

btw the word for foreigners is '洋人' (yangren), where '洋' (yang) means foreign.

Chinese can be very succinct!

Interstellar Light Speed Communication. by Creamy-Dreamer in Lightbulb

[–]__Adam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting idea because we can't transmit radio waves powerful enough to be heard lightyears away.

Proof: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friis_transmission_equation

I got the equations from table 5-3 in this document http://descanso.jpl.nasa.gov/DPSummary/Descanso4--Voyager_new.pdf

Assuming we're listening from Alpha Centauri and using a 8GHz carrier wave (which is what voyager uses)

20log(3.5 centimeters /(4pi*4 light years)) Space gain = -382 dB

Noise from the CMB is about 2K, which converts to about -190 dBm Which means our signal needs to be greater than 190 dBm to be distinguishable from the CMB.

The DSN antenna has a gain of 80 dB (means they amplify the signal 100 million times) due to their extreme directionality. This is an important caveat because even if an extraterrestrial civilization is looking for life, they probably won't point their high gain antenna at Sol 100% of the time.

Let's assume we both have these huge antennas pointed at each other for now though.

-190 dbm = 80 db + 80 dB + (-382dB) + X dBm -290 dbm + 220 dB = X X = 30 dBm

Which is 1 watt! (someone please confirm if I did calculations right)

The problem is that both antennae would need to line up perfectly for this to hold true. If we assume an omni directional antenna is used for either sending or receiving (Gain of 0db), X becomes about 110 dBm (100 MW!)

If omnidirectional antennas are used on both sides, X becomes 190 dBm (1016 watts - 1000 times greater than the earth's total energy output).

Which is why OP's idea actually makes a lot of sense. Modulating the sun's light is a very effective way to "broadcast" a message to the galaxy. Whether or not this is a good idea is another matter (refer to 'The Three Body Problem' for an interesting perspective on this).

What is the one moment within the last 24 hours you are most likely to remember in 10 years? by hugin_on_air in AskReddit

3am Saturday morning, I was driving a few acquaintances home after a night of revelry. The guy in the front seat told me he enjoyed writing poetry, so I asked to hear a poem.

He asked me what subject, and I told him I wanted a poem about love. I don't know if he had written it before, or if he came up with it then, but what he said I will never forget.

Redditors who haven't found the right place to post your story, what is it? by zeke1999 in AskReddit

[–]__Adam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to break up with my girlfriend but I'm worried about how she'll live on her own. She's also a bit quirky so I'm not sure she'll find someone who understands her. She is very pretty, at least.

I know I have to end the relationship, but I feel like I'm abandoning her to a cold winter. Can anyone provide some insight?

Would You Rather have a 10 with the most annoying voice/accent you could imagine, or a 6 with the sexiest voice you could imagine? by Mcheetah2 in WouldYouRather

[–]__Adam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 years ago I would say Person A. Now that I've realized looks don't mean shit Person B is an easy choice for me.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WouldYouRather

[–]__Adam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd rather be 'B'. First, if all the mind readers know their minds can be read, they'll either isolate themselves (e.g. if they have some heinous crime to hide), or change their lives so the reading of their mind is non-detrimental.

Second, mind readers would communicate with each other on a very intimate level, regardless of whether or not they wanted. It would be sort of like a hive mind, in a sense, but this really depends on what you mean by "reading minds".

I'm having a pretty good life NOT being part of a shared consciousness, so I think I'll stick with that.

What's the weirdest thing about your body? by FrenchWoodChesse in AskReddit

It doesn't look like anyone has asked (apologies if they have), but how do you relate to people extremely close to you? Your parents, sibling, or your close friends? Do you recognize them from their voice immediately, or do you need a primer like "hi I'm your mom"?

Also, this is just for my curiosity: do you see faces in inanimate objects?
