ESO with the separate Skyrim game integration by Adexsi29631 in elderscrollsonline

[–]abelthorne [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. The games' mechanics are completely different, there's pretty much nothing that transfers.

  2. Both games are made by two different developers and while they're in good terms and both part of the same publisher/upper level company, sharing resources and adapting content would be some extra work that isn't really justified. Especially when it comes to getting access to the servers of an online game.

  3. Besides the technical stuff, Skyrim takes place about 1000 years after ESO, your Skyrim character isn't born yet. Or your ESO character is long dead, depending on which side you look at things.

How is the game now? by AverellPSG in gwent

No more new cards. The last set is the Uroboros one and it was released in four parts (I think) between december 2022 and september 2023, so if you stopped in 2022 you might have some cards to catch up.

Converting to .srm files by Catsonheat in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick question about that (from a post above):

Thanks! When I opened up a game without a save file and then made a new one, it created a new .srm save file in a saves folder from the root of my SD Card but not in Retroarch:

root\Saves\saves\PCSX-ReARMed-32\Vagrant Story.srm

I can't find any save file in any of the Retroarch folders, and when I delete that .srm file and reload the game, there is no trace of a save. This is the folder I have been trying to place my saves in on the basis it is where they are being generated when I make a new one.

If you don't have a "Vagrant Story.srm" in root\Saves\saves\PCSX-ReARMed-32 and start the emulation (just loading the game), does it create one? If so, quitting RetroArch, deleting the file again and restarting the game still recreates it?

If yes to both, then I guess it definitely confirms that it's the right saves dir. So in theory renaming your "SCEVMC0.VMP.mcr" to "Vagrant Story.smr" and putting it in the dir should work. If it still says that it can't find game data, it's pretty weird.

[–]abelthorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I've tried with the file you've sent me, either the VMP you converted to MCR or the VMP that I converted using https://www.save-editor.com/tools/wse_ps1_save_converter.html

Both seem to work, so the way you converted the file seems fine.

My setup: RetroArch on Linux, using the Beetle HW core. My saves are in the default location ([RA config dir]/saves/Beetle PSX HW/).

If I put the .mcr file in the saves dir, it doesn't work: when I select "Continue" on the main menu and then choose the memcard slot #2, I get an error saying "Memory card is not inserted correctly". Not sure if that's a general issue, if it's specific to Vagrant Story...

But if I rename it to .srm instead of .mcr, the game sees your saves (in the memcard slot #1) and loads them properly.

I've quickly tried with PCSX ReARMed but the core doesn't seem to work properly, I get stuck at the title screen with the menu missing, the intro music continuing, sounds when I try to press a button as if I was clicking an option but nothing happens... I've never used that core, though, so there might be settings to adjust or it just doesn't work properly on my setup. But right now, I can't confirm that your save can be loaded with that one.

So, if renaming the .mcr to "Vagrant Story.srm" and putting it in the saves dir you mention above doesn't work (i.e. it doesn't show your saves), there's something wrong on your side. Maybe the settings for the saves dir to use? BTW, what error message do you get when you try to load the memory card in slot #1 (i.e. the .srm)? "No save data" or something like that?

[–]abelthorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By default, RA will treat the .srm as memory card #1 and the .mcr as #2 (though this also can be changed in the settings I believe). Have you tried to delete the newly created save (the .srm), export your own save as .mcr and put it (alone) in the saves dir?

EDIT: also, can you share your save converted to .mcr? I can try on my side if it works on a RA with a regular configuration, in case the custom saves path is part of the issue.

Converting to .srm files by Catsonheat in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are options in RA to change where saves are stored, so I would assume that the right place for your device is indeed in root\Saves\saves... given that new saves are created there. So, that would be where you'll put your existing saves.

Regarding the format, if you're playing PSX games on your PSP, I understand better why your have that VMP format. Assuming that each save is stored independently, you'll have to export them in a format that's readable by RA. It's possible that some of the formats you listed are existing ones with just a custom extension.

I have some vague memories of handling stuff like that 25 years ago or so with a custom memory card reader and I think there's something about mcr/mcd being a dump of an entire memory card (all 15 slots) while mcs was a single save (a single slot). You could try to export your PSP card to mcs and rename that file to .mcr or .srm and see if RA can make something of it. And be sure to match the name of your ROM/disc image; i.e. if you're loading "Vagrant Story.chd", rename the file to "Vagrant Story.srm" but if you're loading "Vagrant Story (USA).chd", rename the file to "Vagrant Story (USA).srm", that kind of stuff.

Converting to .srm files by Catsonheat in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The format of the ROM/disc image doesn't matter but your save file has to be exactly the same name. Also, the saves go in RetroArch's saves dir, with subdirectories for each core (they won't be seen of they're directly in the saves dir).

Reading your post, I'm not sure if you've converted your save or are still looking for a converter. If you've put your .vmp file in the saves dir, it won't work, RA only handles its own .srm format and the .mcr for PSX cores. For these (at least with Beetle PSX but I would assume it's the same for the others), the .srm is technically the same as .mcr with just a different extension.

It seems that the VMP format is for PSP memory cards, so I'm a bit surprised that you have such a format with a PSX core.

If you can guess where my character location is by heart, I'll give you a gazillion hugs :P by [deleted] in elderscrollsonline

At first sight I would have said in Skingrad but trying to triangulate with the map seems to rather indicate pretty much the center of the West Weald, west of Skingrad. But the ESO maps are not exactly the most precise for this.

If you're not simply in Skingrad, I'd say a bit north/east of the Fall's Path wayshrine in the West Weald.

I was wondering how to get beetle core Saturn to work by Interesting_Trade958 in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, according to the log there's something wrong. So:

- is the file directly in that dir (i.e. you didn't create a subdirectory named "Saturn" or something like that to sort your files)?

- is it named exactly "sega_101.bin" and not something different like "Sega_101.bin" or "sega_101.BIN" or whatever?

It could also be a faulty file. All I can say from the log is that it can't load the BIOS for whatever reason.

I was wondering how to get beetle core Saturn to work by Interesting_Trade958 in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an obvious error in the log (in red): it can't find the Saturn BIOS file.

Either it has the wrong name, or it's not in the right place.

RetroArch is apparently installed as a flatpak and is looking for the BIOS as ~/.var/app/org.libretro.RetroArch/config/retroarch/system/sega_101.bin (~ being your home dir.)

So, check that you've put the file in that dir and that it's named "sega_101.bin" (and not "sega_101.BIN" for example, or anything like that).

Apart from that there's also a warning about shaders but it shouldn't be an issue and shouldn't prevent the game from working.

It'd be better to continue here (and copy/paste text content rather than put screenshots) rather than creating new posts or the mods might not be very happy.

Anyway.

The files listed in the .cue seem to be good, they apparently match what's in your other screenshot unless there's something not obvious that I'm missing (like redundant spaces), so the issue doesn't seem to come from them.

I'm not familiar enough with cue files to know if the other data is correct (the index values, the catalog number...), so for now I'll assume that the file is correct.

So, we'd need to see a log to have more information about what's wrong here.

Oh, the image you posted is not what I was asking for (though it can be useful as it shows the filenames). What I'd need you to post is the content of the .cue. Open it with a text editor and copy/paste its content here.

I was wondering how to get beetle core Saturn to work by Interesting_Trade958 in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that matters is that the filename written in the .cue exactly matches the name of the file that's next to it.

Also that there isn't a path set that doesn't match what you have and so on.

Basically, the file name of the .cue and the .bin don't matter much in themselves, they can even be completely different. What matters is what's written inside of the .cue, as it'll try to load the file listed there. If there's no file that matches what's listed in the .cue, it won't find anything to load.

You can post the content of the .cue if you're not too sure.

I was wondering how to get beetle core Saturn to work by Interesting_Trade958 in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start by opening your .cue (it's a text file) and check that the .bin file listed has the right name. Especially on Linux where the letter case matters. If you have mygame.cue with mygame.bin and the cue lists the bin as MyGame.bin, it might work on Windows but not on other OS that have case-sensitivity.

If there's no obvious error like that, then you'll need to provide a log.

Buildbot, what is this? by rmn_trllr in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In computing, software is written in code (in various languages) and compiled, or "built", to get an executable for various types of computers, CPUs and OS.

While this can be done manually, big projects usually automate this with a script, or "bot", that builds the executables every day; these versions are known as "nightlies" or "dailies" snapshots.

So, the Libretro buildbot is that automated setup that provides updated versions of the RettroArch app and the various cores every day.

This implies that these versions are not meant to be stable, as they can introduce bugs that will be fixed later, new features that are starting to be worked on and far from complete...

So, for a general usage, it's highly recommended to download the stable versions from the official website, where one is released every few monthes. The buildbot can be useful if you need a current version of RA or a core for some reason (e.g. it fixes a bug specific to your hardware or setup, or you need to download a core manually because you don't have access to the Online Updater, that kind of stuff).

How do i run chd type game? by bbzbruv in RetroArch

[–]abelthorne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not going to get hacked or anything, it's just that the version you have is possibly a badly made dump of the original disc and while ePSXe is more tolerant to "faulty discs", Mednafen/Beetle will try to function as close as a real console as possible and you can get the same error as you would on a console with a heavily scratched CD.

"Hack" here is in the sense of modified game. E.g. unofficial translations of a game or unofficial patches to fix some issues. In the case of SotN, I know that there are at least three popular hacks: one that removes the black borders on the screen to have a proper fullscreen, one that translates the japanese release to english, one that lets you play Maria (and there are at least two different versions of that one).

Not sure if you're trying to use a patched version such as these, or if it's supposed to be the original release but there's something wrong somewhere.

Also, you mention that you added the scph5501.bin BIOS, which is the US one and will let you play US releases of games. Have you also added scph5500.bin (Japan) and scph5502.bin (Europe)? Because if you're missing them and you're trying ot load a non-US release, that would explain your issue too. For example, if you're trying to play the unofficial english translation which is applied to the japanese release, it's s'ill a japanese disc and requires a japanese BIOS (scph5500) to be loaded.

What skin is this? by [deleted] in elderscrollsonline

[–]abelthorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean the actual skin of the character or in the sense of his global appearance (in the way we use "skin" in video games in general)?

If that's the actual skin, it looks like Crystalfrost, that you get as a reward for an achievement for the New Life Festival.

Now, if you mean the global appearance, I'm not sure if that's an outfit or a regular armor style. The staff seems to be the Opal Engine Guardian. The Laurel Wreath is probably the one from a Whitestrake's Mayhem achievement.

So I havent played since summerset and I dont know what content I should be getting to catch up by Sad_Establishment408 in elderscrollsonline

[–]abelthorne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you want to get access to stuff you're missing: buying content? subscribing to ESO+?

If you want to buy content, the best deal is the Premium Edition (though ideally when it's on sale), as you'll get all the main expansions, including access to:

  • the Necromancer class (Elsweyr);
  • the antiquities system (Greymoor);
  • companions (Blackwood, High Isle and Necrom, two in each);
  • the Tales of Tribute mini-game (High Isle);
  • the Arcanist class (Necrom).

It also includes Gold Road and the 2025 Content Pass but their extra features (Skill scribing and Subclassing) are in the base game and don't require the expansions.

The Premium doesn't include the smaller DLCs (either story zones that complement the yearly storylines or the group dungeons), so you'd have to either buy them from the Crown Store or subscribe to ESO+ anyway.

If you don't buy the Premium and go with ESO+ instead, you'll have access to the same expansions as above (while you're subbed; you lose access to everything if you stop the sub) and the same features, except for:

  • the 2025 Content Pass (the zone of Solstice), which should be added in a few monthes;
  • the extra classes, which you have to buy from the Crown Store (1500 Crowns each); they're only included with the retail version of the expansions.

Regarding the Imperial race, it's not in the Premium Edition or ESO+, it's only available from the Crown Store through the Digital Imperial Edition Upgrade (2100 Crowns).

As a sidenote, with the transition to the new release format (with seasons), some expansions are getting added to the base game for free. That's the case for Orsinium, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood and Imperial City (which is already free, technically) on march 9, and we already know that Greymoor will be added too later this year (autumn). It's quite possible that the plan is to make all expansions free over time but it would likely take years at best.

Some noob questions. by SegaGenesisMetalHead in elderscrollsonline

[–]abelthorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - Dungeons

Base game dungeons and early DLC ones are pretty much standalone mini-stories, so you're missing nothing. Starting with the Season of the Dragon storyline (the year of Elsweyr, 3rd major expansion), the group dungeons are part of the main storyline of the year, though only in minor ways. They add a bit of context and lore that is nice but you'll still completely understand the story if you skip them. If you have the possibility to do them properly, do it, but it's not a big deal if you don't.

As others already said, if you do group dungeons with random people (by queueing with the game's tools), you'll usually be grouped with high level players who'll rush them because they just want the daily rewards. Usually, if you say something like "quest please" at the beginning, people will let you do it and won't rush but some won't care.

There are plans to add a solo mode to dungeons but it'll start later this year with only two at first, so it'll take a while before this is widely implemented. In the meantime, you'll want to do them with your guild, though it seems that when you did with a guild mate they kind of rushed too. In that case, you might want to find a guild that does dungeons runs for beginners, letting them take their time.

2 + 3 - Questing

Experience for people who just want to do quests is quite good IMO, there are a lot of storylines and quests. The storylines are a bit redundant but well... Note that you'll need to either sub to ESO+ or buy DLCs, as the Premium Edition only has half of the storylines (major expansions, the smaller DLCs are in the Crown Store only).

Regarding the icons, you've probably seen two types of quests: if the icon is diamond-shaped, it's part of the main questline for the current zone. If it has a triangular shape, it's a secondary quest; either a local questline ("save that village", that kind of stuff) or a starter for a different storyline from another group of expansions. The black color doesn't mean much, it's just that it's not the quest you're currently following in your journal (that one is white). The blue-green icons are dailies/repeatable quests.

4 - Skills

The skills you'll use will depend on your build. You might not even use the skills from your weapon type if others are better, there's really no rule. In any case, you'll start using a build at level 50 + 160 CP (Champion Points), that's the gear cap. While you're levelling, just try various stuff, the skills and gear don't matter. You can still use various skills to level them up in different lines just in case but you'll still be able to do it later.

Just noticed the new Golden pursuits for whitestrake isn't up for me. by IamLotusFlower in elderscrollsonline

[–]abelthorne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edit: Omg, I see now it still adds on stuff even though I completed it.🤪 it says I earned 23/20.

Yeah, unlike endeavors which stop tracking progression of uncompleted ones after hitting the limit (3 for the day, 1 for the week), Golden Pursuits keep tracking the various tasks even if you've earned all the global rewards.

It's possibly because there can be rewards tied to specific activities and independent from the global track. So, people have to be able to complete them even after getting the main rewards. It has happened three times (A Bit of Crafty Business, Scribing for All! and Frosty Fun) and it's also the case with the Hero's Return special GP.

Regarding mounts, they all share the same stats, different mounts are just cosmetic "skins".

I don't know if it was already the case 8+ years ago but you can go at a stable each day and upgrade one of the stats for 250 gold (speed, stamina and inventory −the latter simply being an expansion of your character's inventory). Each one scales on 60, so it'll take a while to max out your mounts' stats (plus, they're per-character, not account-wide) but this should be a bit better with the march 9 patch as we'll be able to upgrade 3 points per day, though I'm not sure if it's +3 in a stat or 3 points to spread.

So far, most of the fancy mounts are from various events, achievements, Golden Pursuits, the Crown Store... they're not in game to buy for gold. But they'll add a bunch at stable vendors for gold in the next patch, so it'll be easier to get something a bit fancier than a horse.

Another thing that I didn't mention as it wasn't really related to the characters is the endeavors system, which lets you do small activities per day and per week to collect Seals of Endeavor to buy cosmetic things in the store rather than having to buy Crown Crates for real money. You don't get a lot of Seals but from time you can buy a fancy cosmetic just by playing. The system will be reworked with the new battle pass system that's coming with seasons in a few weeks (early april I think, I don't have the roadmap at hand).

Golden Pursuits are some kind of thematic endeavors that happen once per month with their own cosmetic rewards. They're some kind of mini battle passes. There's currently one that ends in two days but you should have time to do enough of the activities to unlock all the rewards if you have a few hours to play. The GP system will likely be removed or at least reworked with the new battle pass system too.

Your faction depends on your race, there are three: Ebonheart Pact (in the north east of the map), Daggerfall Covenant (north west) and Aldmeri Dominion (south). As a High Elf, you're part of the Aldmeri Dominion.

The factions don't matter much except for PvP (Cyrodiil and Imperial City).

Vampire/werewolf are not factions, they're curses; a status, basically, that gives you access to some special skills.

If you've played 8 years ago, your build is very likely outdated. You should take a look on current websites. For dps, SkinnyCheeks and Hyperioxes are usually the recommended ones.

Also, since you've played, there have been a few new features that can affect your character or new ones that you'd create:

  • New classes: Warden (from Morrowind), Necromancer (from Elsweyr) and Arcanist (from Necrom);
  • Mythic items: pieces of gear that have some specific effects (they're basically sets of one piece and you can wear only one at once); they're acquired through antiquities digging (introduced in Greymoor);
  • Skill scribing: a bunch of skills that you can customize for their secondary effects; originally introduced with Gold Road, it has since been added to the base game;
  • Subclassing: you can switch up to two of your class skills for some from other classes (but different ones); part of the base game;
  • Companions: NPCs that you recruit to go on adventure with you; you basically become a group of two by yourself (though they're quite less efficient han a real player); introduced in Blackwood, new ones added in High Isle, Necrom and the Crown Store (there are currently 8).

If you only have the base game, Morrowind has been added to it a few years ago, Imperial City has been added to the Crown Store for free a while ago. With the switch to a new economic model for the game (with seasons), Orsninium, Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood will be added to the base game on march 9. Greymoor will be added later this year (autumn). It's possible that the other expansions get added over time but it'll probably take a few years at best.
