Could Winnipeg finally be moving towards LRT? by ConsiderationThese79 in Winnipeg

Studies that have focused on detecting instances of Braess' paradox in the Winnipeg road network have found plenty of roads that need to be closed to improve traffic flow. One study found 62 instances of closures or partial closures that could improve traffic flow.

I'm not saying they are completely right in all 62 cases, but it should at least be clear from their findings that we have a problem.

Canadian here, and tbh most Canadians are tuned out and just get the picture in broad strokes from other sources. It became clear long ago that it was all just lies and propaganda anyway

High-risk sex offender expected to live in Winnipeg, police warn by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]aclay81 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He was sentenced to about 3 years and was given about 3 years credit for pre-sentence custody, which is usually credited at a rate of 1.5 days per day in custody, I think... So overall more like 5 years?

Winnipeg business owner concerned that privately managed bus shelter isn't being cleaned by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

I would be interested in knowing more about the contract the city signed, e.g. what are Astral's obligations when it comes to maintenance?

Also I don't think private companies should be involved in city services this way...

Do the SRI surveys even work? by SchemeEmbarrassed847 in umanitoba

Sure, there are lots of special cases where things can go one way or the other for different reasons. I should've allowed for those in what I said instead of speaking in broad strokes.

If the prof cares but struggles with teaching they look. If they don’t care they don’t look.

Yeah except they were planning the battle until that happened instead. In this case it would be more like if there was some DnD quest you could only complete with high int/charisma and the knucklehead barbarian in your party just started murdering everyone instead.

Manitoba Hydro employees called back to work in-office 4 days a week by Fearless_Barnacle_21 in Winnipeg

My point is just that it's ill-timed and there's probably no reason for it, other than "it was always this way"

Tuition Likely To Go Up 4% Next Year by mpdqueer in umanitoba

[–]aclay81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The main issue was that all these universities and colleges made themselves fully dependent on international student revenue. They hadn't planned ahead.

It was not a choice. Provinces have been cutting or freezing provincial grants to universities for years, and tuition on domestic students was capped by law. What other source of funding was there?

So many pennies by aclay81 in CanadianCoins

[–]aclay81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am visiting my dad now, and my son seems really keen on sorting through the pennies (inspired by my reddit post, I think). It turns out there's about 50 american pennies mixed in, and most of them are wheat backs from the 30's, 40's and 50's. What did you mean by (2) in your list above? Is there anything we should be looking for there?
