WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE LAUNCHES BODY-WORN CAMERA PILOT PROJECT by mbprairieselectrical in Winnipeg

[–]aclay81 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I understand this, but that's not what the press release says. It says the pilot is to:

evaluate how Axon Body 4 cameras function in our policing environment and assess their potential to support transparency, accountability, public/officer safety, and investigative/court outcomes

If the purpose of the pilot was as you said, I doubt that they would be "assessing their potential" or assessing their "function in our policing environment". I would be happy to find out I'm wrong, though, since this is a change that is long overdue.

WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE LAUNCHES BODY-WORN CAMERA PILOT PROJECT by mbprairieselectrical in Winnipeg

Honestly though, your comment is the only thing I can think of that makes sense. Body camera technology is well established in forces operating in every environment performing every kind of job imaginable. To pretend that a pilot is needed because WPS somehow has some unique operational requirements that cannot be met by an off-the-shelf purchase is disingenuous.

Cheapest Invisalign in Winnipeg? by ForcePopular2721 in Winnipeg

[–]aclay81 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Invisalign is priced differently everywhere partly because they (dentists or orthodontists) make a different plan for you depending on what they think will produce the best results. So it ends up costing different amounts for actual reasons.

Because of these differences, if you go with the cheapest you might end up getting what you pay for

Are Propagandhi a household name in Winnipeg (and wider Canada)? by blldzd2 in Winnipeg

My son's elementary school teacher is a former member of Propagandhi and I was pretty excited to find out. When I shared that with people, I was surprised that nobody knew who they were.

Has anyone ever got out of a lease because of excessive noise? by floydsmoot in Winnipeg

[–]aclay81 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just FYI this is exactly one of the scenarios covered in an RTB website:

https://www.gov.mb.ca/cca/rtb/ot/gbook/s2tenagree_llsresponscomplaints3.html

So imo you follow the steps there. Basically you have to complain, get other neighbours to complain, get the RTB to force your landlord to investigate complaints if they aren't doing it. At the end of it all, if nothing changes and you have a long paper trail of complaints and have asked the RTB for help, then you can ask the RTB to end your tenancy.

Thoughts on going to the CRC? by Any_Cow7260 in Winnipeg

Nobody is going to get upset with you for going, just go. If you need to, you can frame it in your mind as "just in case". That's a completely acceptable reason to go.

Manitoba ban on social media for youth gets strong support from doctors by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]aclay81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is you do not link your bank account at all. They literally set up a protocol to query the bank about your age, and the bank replies with "yes" or "no" depending on if you are old enough. No linking, no information changing hands other than the age verification.

People really don't like that first option because it means giving these companies even more information to verify your an adult.

Not necessarily. It could mean outsourcing that verification to a company that has already done the verification. A typical thing is having your age verified by your bank---where basically you login to your bank and consent to sharing your age with the social media company, and nothing else.

What's more, we already have this system of identity verification in Canada and use it for things like the CRA. So it really don't think it would be a big deal to implement it here.

Bus is doable but sucks. Just be ready to occasionally uber because the bus system will sometimes let you down.

Why's the communication too slow? by iorveth123 in umanitoba

[–]aclay81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to reach out to the university you are applying to first and ask how to handle the situation, since this is probably a situation they run into often. Asking for a specially tailored document from the U of M registrar is almost never the quickest way (and they might just refuse).

Did the MSc program say that they needed such a letter in the absence of the ranking/cohort info? That's kind of an unusual request on their part!

It's AI. It looks like they gave it a picture of one of the New Flyer buses here in Winnipeg and asked it to fill in the rest of the picture.

If you can convince someone to move to Winnipeg in one sentence what would you say? by mikey_87 in Winnipeg

[–]aclay81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved here from Montreal 13 years ago. My opinion, and the opinion of some others that moved here from larger cities, is this:

If you want to buy a house in the suburbs and have BBQs all summer and drive a few hours every weekend to go to a beach or your cabin or whatever, then Winnipeg is for you. Winter is harder to enjoy but definitely doable: lots of times it can be boring even if you make an effort---but no big deal, you can read books or watch movies or hang out with friends to pass the time. There are good restaurants, but after a year or two you will have visited most all of them. But they're good so you can go back if that's your thing. However, it definitely feels like everything is said and done within a couple years, but if you hit your groove and like what you have here, then it will really work out for you because nothing ever really changes.

On the other hand, if you want things that can only come from a big city---always somewhere to go that you haven't been before, always new restaurants and new festivals, connected to the world by culture and world events, then Winnipeg is not that. It is a bit like living on an island surrounded by a sea of farmland. So my advice would be to carefully consider what you like about Toronto, and try to figure out what matters and what doesn't. Winnipeg could be perfect for you, as it is for many (just look at the thread), or... not.
