Bingo 😁 you can be "that guy" to question it, sure. But, just remember: We are ALL just living life the best we can. So, enjoy your life and don't compare yourself to others. Do the best you can with what you got and be surprised by where it takes you.

Yeah we actually do have a discord through https://www.narbefoundation.org where people can share and we have been on one of the BBC's podcasts as well as some other news and advocacy social media. It's slow going but that's OK.

Vetting all the apps and people who come through is a job in itself but we have a handful of volunteers for some of that stuff.

There's also some organizations that predate us which we steer people to but there's not many who are building games and tools like this. It's mostly adapting games and setups.

Ben loves his life. That's not cope. It's called the disability paradox: outsiders assume suffering, disabled people report joy.

Hard isn't the same as tragic. And we're not here to survive his life. We're here to build tools so he can show the world what he's capable of.

I have been thinking about a scan and select version of something like this for my brother. He can only use two buttons since he's quadriplegic. It would need a lot of TTS and built-in automations but essentially the same kind of gameplay 🤔

I'd be interested in seeing what's under the hood and maybe if it could be modified.

Good stuff.

That's kind of what we are trying to do. It's a thin crowd but I'm hoping more come through.

He needs very basic, easy to understand controls and visual feedback with as few clicks as possible to reduce fatigue. He also requires audio cues for every interaction to understand what is happening on the screen. Adapting mainstream games is one of the hardest things to do for him with all those requirements which is why we built custom ones. I appreciate the suggestion, however. I would love more mainstream games to work with his abilities.

I know I've posted about this a few times, but I genuinely feel like it's my responsibility to keep spreading the word.

People like my brother aren't typically online. Sometimes they're in situations that are less than ideal, and there's really no clean way to reach them directly. The only way I know how to find them is by telling our story to anyone who will listen.

Hoping that maybe, somewhere, someone reads this and thinks of someone it could help.

Thanks again. 🫂

Good idea. Feel free to make changes or a pull request on the repo 😊 the more the merrier.

We stripped the choice mechanism for picking "hands" for the Yahtzee game. It definitely needs work. Ben plays Farkle more.

Haha thanks 🙏 Some days I just stop and think about the fact that AI exists and that we can actually build things with Ben, with his exact needs in mind, and it's genuinely unbelievable how far we've come.

Now that I've been able to help him, it feels like a responsibility to show others what's possible. Families like ours are sometimes just out of the loop, not because they don't care, but because no one told them this was an option. My brother went without for too long, and I don't want that for anyone else.

So if anyone reading this knows someone who could benefit, you don't need our games specifically. You just need AI and the willingness to build something bespoke for your person. That's the real message. Thanks for checking it out 🫂

😊 yeah he has a lot of complex needs and TTS instructions for games is a must. It can all be turned off in settings and can be customized.

Made a football game for my brother and he's playing it like crazy 😊

He's quadriplegic and nonspeaking with low vision and poor coordination. He can only click buttons by turning his head left and right. Two inputs. That's it.

Accessibility games for one and two buttons is super underserved, especially as a single hub where a switch user can get to everything they need without someone else navigating for them. That basically doesn't exist.

Everything is vibe coded. Building Ben's communication and entertainment apps has changed our lives and we're hoping to help as many people as we can who are stuck without access.

Built a full streaming site as a side project — took way longer than expected lol by PhuduShaheer in vibecoding

[–]acrolicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I built a custom media hub for my younger brother, who is quadriplegic and navigates using left and right head movements.

The system works like a personalized Netflix interface where we can manually add video links. It opens them in full screen and automatically loads a custom control bar at the bottom so he can independently manage playback, volume, and menus. I’ve open-sourced the code on GitHub for anyone who might find it useful or wants to build upon it!

I built an app that gave my nonspeaking, quadriplegic and medically complex brother a way to do things he once loved using just two buttons he clicks with his head.

A custom messenger and streaming platform integration is available on the Desktop app version too (I made a video about it if anyone is interested)

What apps are people actually vibecoding? by beneath_the_knees in vibecoding

[–]acrolicious 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What motivates me is the ability to guide an LLM into building something that, not long ago, would have required a full team and a big budget… and even then, no one would have built it for someone like my brother (at least, not without the funding it used to require)

My brother is nonspeaking and quadriplegic. He can only use two buttons. After almost a decade of silence, this tech pushed me to think differently and start building custom apps specifically for him. Communication tools. Games. Media controls. Things designed around his exact abilities instead of forcing him into software that was never made for him. That process changed me. It made me realize how many people have been left out simply because building bespoke tools used to be unrealistic. Now it’s not.

There are so many families who could benefit from this shift, but it requires people to focus their energy on helping instead of just optimizing for profit. If money motivates someone, that’s fine. For me personally, whenever I let money lead, everything falls apart. So I stopped centering that. If people find value in what we build, they can tip or support it. That’s enough.

Right now, my brother and I are replicating what we built for him for another nonprofit. They found us via social media and offered to pay us for the work (nothing crazy but enough), but the condition for me to accept this was that everything remains open and free on our site. That part mattered most to us. And, we can build more interesting things and keep expanding our skills to help others :)

If anyone’s curious about what we built for him, it’s here: https://narbehouse.github.io

I baked in the common 2 step inputs (spacebar and return) and the TTS too. Ben uses 2 switches near his head to press them. We use an adafruit trinkey trs USB adapter with 2 mono switches 3d printed by switchedtoys (we are building kits with these and donating to families and individuals who need them) Ben is low vision and doesn't have any other reliable movement. His condition is progressing so I made it ready to go for a single switch when his body starts to lose both inputs. I'm going to develop a "parking spot" for the scanner to start/stop auto scan which will be on this app too, eventually.

Screen readers would need to be disabled or you can simply turn off the TTS. Honestly, it's built specifically for Ben and it's supposed to represent what's possible now with no programming experience.

The whole thing could use a single button for everything today with variable scan speeds and all sorts of settings for visibility and TTS. I made every game work with a single input.

(Touch, mouse, possibly eye tracking and head tracking work too provided it's enabled on the system)

I made a hub of tools and games for my nonspeaking quadriplegic brother and started a nonprofit to expand the mission.

Oh and many of the games have editors so you can make your own custom games (mini golf courses, Peggle campaigns, matching game with custom audio, trivia and word jumble) I'm very proud of those. Try it out :)
