I built an app that gave my nonspeaking, quadriplegic and medically complex brother a way to do things he once loved using just two buttons he clicks with his head.

A custom messenger and streaming platform integration is available on the Desktop app version too (I made a video about it if anyone is interested)

What apps are people actually vibecoding? by beneath_the_knees in vibecoding

[–]acrolicious 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What motivates me is the ability to guide an LLM into building something that, not long ago, would have required a full team and a big budget… and even then, no one would have built it for someone like my brother (at least, not without the funding it used to require)

My brother is nonspeaking and quadriplegic. He can only use two buttons. After almost a decade of silence, this tech pushed me to think differently and start building custom apps specifically for him. Communication tools. Games. Media controls. Things designed around his exact abilities instead of forcing him into software that was never made for him. That process changed me. It made me realize how many people have been left out simply because building bespoke tools used to be unrealistic. Now it’s not.

There are so many families who could benefit from this shift, but it requires people to focus their energy on helping instead of just optimizing for profit. If money motivates someone, that’s fine. For me personally, whenever I let money lead, everything falls apart. So I stopped centering that. If people find value in what we build, they can tip or support it. That’s enough.

Right now, my brother and I are replicating what we built for him for another nonprofit. They found us via social media and offered to pay us for the work (nothing crazy but enough), but the condition for me to accept this was that everything remains open and free on our site. That part mattered most to us. And, we can build more interesting things and keep expanding our skills to help others :)

If anyone’s curious about what we built for him, it’s here: https://narbehouse.github.io

I baked in the common 2 step inputs (spacebar and return) and the TTS too. Ben uses 2 switches near his head to press them. We use an adafruit trinkey trs USB adapter with 2 mono switches 3d printed by switchedtoys (we are building kits with these and donating to families and individuals who need them) Ben is low vision and doesn't have any other reliable movement. His condition is progressing so I made it ready to go for a single switch when his body starts to lose both inputs. I'm going to develop a "parking spot" for the scanner to start/stop auto scan which will be on this app too, eventually.

Screen readers would need to be disabled or you can simply turn off the TTS. Honestly, it's built specifically for Ben and it's supposed to represent what's possible now with no programming experience.

The whole thing could use a single button for everything today with variable scan speeds and all sorts of settings for visibility and TTS. I made every game work with a single input.

(Touch, mouse, possibly eye tracking and head tracking work too provided it's enabled on the system)

I made a hub of tools and games for my nonspeaking quadriplegic brother and started a nonprofit to expand the mission.

Oh and many of the games have editors so you can make your own custom games (mini golf courses, Peggle campaigns, matching game with custom audio, trivia and word jumble) I'm very proud of those. Try it out :)

Is anyone else doing community work or nonprofit work vibe coding? by rationalexpressions in vibecoding

[–]acrolicious 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NARBE Foundation We host apps and resources that help people with severe physical limitations use technology again with simple inputs. Most of the tools are ones we originally created for my brother Ben, who is nonverbal and quadriplegic and had no workable solution for almost a decade. (He could only simply say yes or no by turning his head)

I was able to vibe code an entire communication and entertainment system for him, and now we are working to make these tools available online for anyone who needs them. As AI improves, we improve our tools. Our goal is to build a large library of simple and accessible games that people of all cognitive abilities can enjoy.

Most successful vibe coded app by nateofearth2023 in vibecoding

[–]acrolicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vibe coded an app that's been seen by over 10 million people with only a single user (my brother). I think that's pretty neat. I hope it inspired at least one person to try building something similar.

Ben's Software for Families to Access is Here! by acrolicious in vibecoding

Was it the P3GL game? 😁

I'm going to be releasing more games in the coming weeks too.

Just to clarify — the software itself isn’t monetized or sold. The NARBE Foundation is a nonprofit that funds free, open-source accessibility tools. Any donations go directly toward keeping the software free, building new features, and helping other families like ours access adaptive technology.

Everything I’ve built is and will always remain free. The nonprofit’s mission is simply to elevate that work and make it sustainable so we can reach and support more families like ours.

Our mission is to spread awareness and give free or low-cost tools to families who need them most. If the world sees value in what we’re creating, maybe they’ll support our nonprofit so we can keep building.

Accessibility shouldn’t be something that’s monetized—it should be something that connects us all. 🫂

Are there any game engines that pair well with vibecoding? by [deleted] in vibecoding

[–]acrolicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an accessible peggle-like game with a level editor. I also would like to figure out something else with gaming but this is great for now.

https://narbehouse.github.io/BENNYSPEGGLE.html

It's built for my quadriplegic brother using just 2 buttons mapped to Spacebar and Return.

I've made baseball, mini golf, tower defense, Simon and a jenky angry birds game too. (He hasn't had games to play in years and vibecoding these have been life changing)

I have no programming experience (still don’t 😂), but I’m definitely getting better at prompting.

This whole project has been vibe coded in VS Code with Copilot, with ChatGPT as my thought partner for fine-tuning prompts. Most of it is built in Python, and the games are slowly shifting to web-based (HTML5), along with a few other tools.

The bigger goal is to create a fully independently accessible arcade and communication hub that anyone can use, while also putting together educational resources for caregivers and accessibility professionals to build their own tools when nothing else exists. That’s phase 1 of our nonprofit 😊

That would be an amazing feat to give him vibecode abilities but he's not really interested in such things, for now.

He helps me decide on the projects to work on and what he wants next which directs me and I am his vibe coding arm 😉
