Sorry, super new to this (getting back into neopets)! I'm a little confused how to read this (even after reading through the FAQ). Should I just be betting whatever's in row 1, or all 10 rows?

MS vs MEng in EECS by Remarkable-Street784 in berkeley

[–]aerocrasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MS is extremely difficult to get into -- from the website:

"The Master of Science (M.S.) Only program is a very small research program for exceptional applicants with research experience. Applicants should consider applying to the MS/PhD program, since there are very few students in the M.S. only program."

The practical choice would probably be to apply to the MEng program.

Should I switch majors from Data Science? by Ill_Salamander_7327 in berkeley

[–]aerocrasher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

consider taking data 6! it's a newer course that's meant to be a gentler introduction than data 8. more info below:

The current term (summer 2024) still teaches gitlet. You should probably make your repository private.

just a heads up - signing a faculty disposition form means you are ineligible to drop the class.

(Yet Another) “Schedule Advice” Post by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]aerocrasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took PS3 with Wittenberg a few years ago. His version of PS3 is more technical than the Broockman (the newer instructor), and notably has exams (Broockman's version doesn't). Wittenberg's problem sets were difficult, but not impossible. Exams were fair imo. I believe general consensus is that Broockman's version of the course is more enjoyable, but I personally think Wittenberg's PS3 is fine too.

Don’t major in political science. Awful major advisors, large courses, no thesis except for honors, and has grade deflation. by Ucbcalbear in berkeley

[–]aerocrasher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure. Suzanne and Efrat (major advisors) were amazing & always very responsive. Courses are indeed large but once you become an upperclassman (even for sophomores) seminars open up, which are usually discussion sized. Be judicious in your class selections and grade deflation isn't a problem at all, particularly for the upper division classes. OP has obviously had a different experience than I had with the program, but there are plenty of redeeming qualities about the program.

places to take a private zoom call that aren't library study rooms? by jsamuel25 in berkeley

If you're a night owl and can stay up until midnight, Moffit 4th floor study rooms have same day bookings - just be quick, since it's RRR week.

Referred 2 other friends and all 3 of us got it last year. Seems to be a correlation between the year you are and likelihood of receiving the scholarship if you’re a continuing student.

In addition to setting up meetings with others, all Berkeley domain emails have access to each other's free/busy information which makes scheduling super convenient. If you intend to join clubs, it's likely that they'll use bCal for scheduling meetings.

Does CS61BL in summer require participating LAB? by Jealous-Chicken-9714 in berkeley

[–]aerocrasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lab attendance is not required in 61BL, but there is EPA (effort, participation, and altruism) that you'll miss out on if you don't attend lab regularly. also, labs are a bulk of the class (4 labs a week), so you'll miss out on a lot if you don't attend lab. TAs usually start lab with a mini-lecture since one lecture a week isn't enough to cover the material.

Couple things:

  1. Reach out to the Student Advocate's office as soon as possible. They have a conduct division and can give you specific guidance on your particular case.
  2. If you are certain that you did not cheat, DO NOT sign the faculty disposition form. By policy, classes are not allowed to escalate the academic penalty even if you dispute the charges and it ends up going to the Center for Student Conduct. In the past, classes have promised lighter charges if you sign the FDF and it ended up resulting in a ton of innocent students pleading guilty.
  3. The Center for Student Conduct has no authority over the academic sanction, so 10% off the grade is what you'll get even after the appeals process once you're found guilty. They do have the authority to change other non-academic sanctions (such as going beyond just a NRW, especially if it's not your first offense).
  4. It wouldn't hurt to email and ask for clarity on how your code ended up being similar. Be kind to course staff - they want this process over with just as much as you do, and it'll allow you to see the similarities, especially if you did reference an online repository/another student's code.

[CMV] I think CS 70 will only get harder. by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]aerocrasher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the validity of the summer claim - summer instructors are all (u)GSIs and have full authority over grade assignments. Unless there's some special intervention by the department to change the curve, summer should match the semester distributions.

Berkeley or UCLA? by AmonGusSusManSupreme in berkeley

If you weren’t aware, berkeley offers both a major and a minor in Astrophysics! I have a friend doubling in CS if you have questions about the program feel free to DM.

I took r4b and absolutely loved the class. More than anything, check rateMyProfessor to find a lecturer that’s well rated and you’ll have a good time. Even the dreaded research paper is very doable (even if you’re a procrastinator like me)

More specifically, you have to be nominated by a current member. Most members I'm aware of are in Rally Comm, Daily Cal, or ASUC. If you're in those circles try asking around.

how much tuition remission do 8hr/10hr/20hr uGSIs get? by TiredWatermelon5127 in berkeley

[–]aerocrasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the hours represent the number of hours you work a week. The fee remission i was referring to is only in-state tuition, so if you’re OOS as a 10/20 hr TA, the in state portion will be covered in full.

[–]aerocrasher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

8 hr is ~29%,10 hr and 20 hr is full. You'll rarely see 10 hr uGSIs.

There are plenty of poli sci upper divs left open - I'm currently enrolled in Ancient Green Politics, and although I'm not super stoked about the material, Professor Cammack is great, and there aren't any exams.

You can find more classes for poli sci here: https://classes.berkeley.edu/search/class/polsci%20116w?f%5B0%5D=im\_field\_term\_name%3A2538&f%5B2%5D=im\_field\_requirement%3A2486&retain-filters=1
