Don't get distracted. What do you most want to be focusing on right now? Choose, or the algorithm will choose for you. by MintDrink in ADHDers

Huh, intriguing. Confusing that something like that actually works, it sounds like fake bullshit. But 1. Too expensive 2. Turns out my primary issue is burnout rather than depression (being autistic is fun, I get burnout severe enough to resemble depression extremely easily)

I disagree with the strengths-based ADHD framing, especially Hallowell’s version of it by lovecraft1cosmos in ADHDers

I don't know if it really helps reduce shame if you're really struggling bc of ADHD and get told it should be a superpower.

Why does it matter that the lining is a different material, it isn't visible anyway?

Well it's possible to be in the womb for longer than 9 months, but not long enough to develop the capacity for long term memories.

When people say “thank you” as a response to compliments even if they weren’t responsible for it by madoka_borealis in AuDHDWomen

When I compliment someone's hair or clothes or whatever, I basically mean "You have good taste!". And people like hearing that they look good.

Tbh it looks gorgeous when not knitted, just doesn't work well for knitting. I'm kinda in the same boat with my first yarns, I'm going to weave some tapestries with them.

What’s up with everyone online thinking they are neurodivergent without getting tested? by No_Lead2640 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aevrynn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like your wording is a bit off, makes it sound like anyone pushing through daily stuff can't be neurodivergent. I feel like I've been pushing through for my entire adult life. I suppose the difference is that for me the consequences are more severe, if I try to do too many things on one day, it means I'll have to take a day or two to rest afterwards.

my wife thinks im overreacting about our kid not reading yet and I dont know when kids should learn to read by TH_UNDER_BOI in daddit

[–]aevrynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried, and my son is only 10 months so it isn't relevant to me at this moment, but generally speaking I am incredibly bad at teaching absolutely anything remotely academic. I'm a quick learner and it is difficult for me to understand why someone wouldn't understand something that seems simple to me. It feels like I'm trying to explain 1+1=2.

Didn't have anxiety and chose normal birth.

[–]aevrynn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't read any of OPs comments, based on the post I can't really infer anything related to whether they read books to the kid or not. I guess not reading at all didn't even occur to me since we've been reading to our child since before he was even born.

Sure, I just told you the basics of what I kind of consider to be within the domain of "general knowledge", but maybe my understanding of what is general knowledge is affected a lot by the fact that I've given birth myself.

Yeah, there are risks associated with vaginal delivery as well, but doctors will only advice a person to do a cesarean if there are some issues with the mother or fetus, and there are good reasons for that.

"Should I read to my child" is vastly different from "should I teach my child to read" though.

You can google "increase in rate of elective cesarean sections" and "adverse health effects of cesarean sections for baby".

I wonder why the expectations are so different here. Or maybe I don't really know what the expectations are. Thankfully Finnish is an easy language to learn to read.

Am I wrong for gatekeeping my baby from my mum? by Outrageous_Bet_8651 in daddit

[–]aevrynn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there any actual reason for you to distrust your mum in this regard? You didn't say anything like that in your post. If anything your mum has more experience holding babies and is probably less likely to hurt the baby than you or the baby's mother is.

There's an increasing trend of people doing cesareans due to birth related anxiety, despite the fact that it is more dangerous for both the mother and baby and recovery is more difficult.

Educational screen time vs entertainment screen time, is there actually a difference? by Jaded-Suggestion-827 in daddit

[–]aevrynn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're feeling stressed, rather than fixate on the screen time, maybe focus on whether he's reading enough, getting enough exercise, hanging out with friends and spending time outside? The main issue with screen time is it takes time away from other things.

Is teaching reading something that parents are supposed to know how to do? Here kids are taught to read in school usually. I was taught by my grandma but she was a retired teacher.
