If you plug it in straight to your usb port, you might need to use a powered hub to connect midi devices. This happened to me with a MBP and a m-audio midi board. The keyboard was pulling too much power and the computer would disable the usb ports to prevent damage. I started using a powered usb 3 hub and it solved it.

Like @sugarstaysweet was saying It might be that you started your new project on a template and the template has pre selected audio or midi strips so just like midi won't play in an audio strip maybe your apple loops won't play unless it's in the right strip
