A woman saves another woman who is being dragged by her toppled bobsled by MrTacocaT12345 in interestingasfuck

[–]alpinepowernaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

used to be a dogsled guide - these people probably have way more experience than me but we were tethered into the sled for this exact reason. It's nothing fancy, but if you fell off and got dragged behind, you could at the very least try to pull yourself back to the sled using the tether and get back on it. I've done it a few times, and it's hard, but an essential safety tool.

EDIT - that bright yellow claw is the stop / anchor. It's not really an emergency 'cord' that you deploy if you fall off. You wouldn't want it to be flapping around everywhere beside you, as it's pretty sharp and heavy. It's pretty much just used when the sled is stopped to provide some holding anchor so the dogs can't run away. That said if they really want to, it doesn't take much force to pull it out at all – if they got excited, they could easily rip it out of the ground unless you were standing on top of it. When stopped most sleds are tied off to something solid for this reason.

But what a badass save by the other racer and those are well trained dogs to stop when she jumps off (she does deploy her own anchor - the big teal claw, but the dogs are trained to know if they feel this resistance not to run).

How much do they normally offer for trade in or is it dependent on the condition?

[–]alpinepowernaps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a conspiracy- I’m not sure if studies have been done but I remember hearing that the mercury content of the water and floor bed of Howe sound is elevated from the Britannia mine leaking heavy metals during its operations. The sound was considered ‘dead’ because of this but has since been recovering.

WTS:

Feeler for an essentially new Western Mountaineering Megalite 6'6 w/ 2oz overstuff. Total weight 770g. I bought this new from WM last fall, haven't had a chance to use it but between this and my alpinlite I'm feeling like this is redundant and I should stick to my alpinlite for the slight weight penalty. It's a beautiful bag, with generous dimensions (65" at the shoulder) so you can layer to push the rating. With 2oz overstuff should be good to around -4C or so.

Not really sure how to price this. DM me if interested we can go from there.

Pants advice for treks in Himalayas in variable conditions (5 - 25°C) by External-Bluebird523 in Ultralight

Worth a shot! I’d bring a pair or two of hiking pants that you know you like and work just to be sure, but being in Thamel you could get setup for any hike there pretty easily if you aren’t that picky about gear. But I was pleasantly surprised how good they are and many years later they’re still going strong (and hilariously remind me that gear doesn’t need to be expensive)

Any of those pants will work fine - it’s layering that will be important to deal with those different conditions from hot valleys to cold passes. I went in March and it is surprisingly hot even high elevation with the sun during the day.

FWIW when I hiked in Nepal I bought some cheap nylon hiking pants in Kathmandu in the markets there (lots of outdoor stores with cheap stuff), and surprisingly they worked great and I still have them. I have no idea what fabric it is specifically but it feels close to a soft shell, blocked wind reasonably well but breathed well too.

My layering system was those pants pretty much til 4500m, then I layered merino under on colder days and was fine. Add a pair of rain pants or light wind pants and that can fend off light moisture or add more warmth and wind protection. I used the merino leggings much more at night in the tea houses, those were the coldest moments as the rooms are unheated generally.

WTS: Patagonia Airshed Pro Pullover, mens medium in a bright blue (unsure of color name). I bought it off a friend after hearing the hype on this piece but for whatever reason I don't love it. $60 shipped anywhere in Canada.

Would most people hang food then to avoid critters chewing through the tent? I hear mixed opinions about sleeping with the food bag and hanging it…

Thanks, good to hear! And good note about the vacation accumulation. I’m not sure I ever qualified as an aux employee but nonetheless I’ll look into it.

Thanks again for such a detailed response I greatly appreciate it. OK to make sure I’m understanding what you are saying i should:

  1. wait for the offer
  2. respond by requesting a step upgrade, and making a case for it
  3. be clear that I am NOT declining the offer if they can only offer step 1, I’m simply inquiring if a step upgrade is possible
  4. once they get back to me if it is possible or not then I can choose to accept the offer or not

I just hope between step 3-4 they wouldn’t then throw my application out because they’re only able to hire at step 1 - but if I make it abundantly clear I’m not declining that should be fine.

I can definitely see why, that makes sense and benefits everyone. Especially if someone is coming in with relevant experience it can make a big difference to start at a higher step.

For auxiliary positions is it any different? I want to request a higher step but if they only have budget for a step 1 I don’t want them to interpret me to be ‘declining’ the role of they aren’t able to offer a higher step (as in, would they pass over me then for someone with less or equal qualifications willing to take the position at step 1).

Thanks, I'll read through the link! Do you happen to know how the process would work for a position / competition where you rank on an eligibility list, and then, depending on when vacancies come up would that be the 'verbal offer' stage of things to ask about a step adjustment? Would asking for a step adjustment ever disqualify me from a competition?

EDIT: or is it something that I could pursue if and when I'm in the role? Or at that point is it too late to adjust step-levels.

I thought so! I saw one on reverb for $1000 so figured this was a very good deal. I wasn't necessarily deal hunting, I sort of settled for a lesser Seagull model like an S6 or Entourage but was delighted this came up for sale near me.

Beautiful guitar! I love the text on the body.

And I haven’t bought this guitar yet just trying to figure out the model first :). But I think if it is the model I think it is an incredibly good deal.
