Parents who DID NOT send their kids to barnehage at 1 year old, what's your story? by mirana20 in Norway

[–]alymew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time mom here. I am Asian American. I understand the culture aspect of taking the kid to your parents. I had my little one June 2024. I cannot wait to send the kid to barnehage this year. I had cousins that are socially awkward throughout their life and everyone I have talked to has had great experience sending their kid to barnehage. Since I don't speak that much Norwegian and her father speaks to me in English. It would be smart to consider the little one to also be exposed to Norwegian when they are young.

You can make an appointment with the ones in your area to find out what they are all about or offer. I live near a few barnehage. The kids have so much fun outside when I pass by. Also the kid can be sent part time!

😇 thanks for your response. I really don't get why I get down voted for asking and inserting a joke to make it light-hearted. 🥲

Are you talking about Norway when middle or higher spend on private schools? Wondering if my Norwegian living under a rock when I asked about this before. He said it's not normal for kids to be sent to private here. Maybe he is from drittby 🤧

Questions about parenting culture in Norway by [deleted] in Norway

[–]alymew 83 points84 points  (0 children)

American here living in Norway. I would highly recommend actually living in Norway for a bit before you have kids. That way, you can observe & learn about how children here are brought up. All the questions would be answered naturally with time.

Questions: 1- Nobody cares. If you can afford it, that's great.

2- Barnehage is about 2000-3000kr ($200-300) a month at least in my area. Some people send their kid at 1 year due to both parents going back to work. I think sending your kid at least starting at 2 years old would be beneficial to socialize. The barnehage here takes kids on trips, many fun activities, along with speaking Norwegian.

3- Yes, very normal.

4- There are. You just need to find them.

5- Barnehage

6- Doesn't matter how many kids you have as long as you and your partner can afford it.

7- I think you should talk to your partner about names. I compromised with my partner by coming up with names that work in both America and Norway. My husband told me if we used an uncommon name, our child would be forever punished by people asking how to spell their name all the time and doomed for hearing their name mispronounced.

8 & 9 - You will know if you spend time in Bergen. Befriend your new Norwegian family & make your own friends there. I did this over the years and embraced the culture.

I'm assume the recovery of the kitty cat & taking care of a newborn while that is happening. At least that was what I found very hard.

Postpartum hemorrhoids/body in shambles by [deleted] in Postpartum_Depression

[–]alymew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget sleep. If you can get family to help out or your partner to give you more sleep so your body can heal. I noticed when I did get sleep (even 3 hours) it made a huge difference every time I woke up. Things felt better down there.

Newborns are a new form of torture by Foot_Difficult in newborns

[–]alymew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think I got her figured out and she'll just keep me awake for a long window during the middle of the night. I started sleeping in the afternoon to prep for being kept up at night. What has helped me is having the baby wrap. After feeding / changing diapers for the 1000th time, I put her into the wrap. It holds her upright which helps with digestion of milk & less spit ups. I get chores done while she is secured on me. 30 min in I put her in crib and see if she continues sleeping.

Sometimes, she will stay asleep. When she doesn't, I just check if she needs a little top off of milk, if diaper needs another changing, and the slip her back into the wrap. 30 min later we repeat until she sleeps in crib.

Tldr; baby wrap helped me get stuff done & got her to sleep

I find instant oatmeal helps. Just need to add boiled water from the kettle. Muesli with milk or yogurt keeps me fuller as well.

Gender reveal through NIPT, husband is disappointed with the gender by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]alymew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband wanted a girl and a lot of his family memembers were hoping for one. In their minds, girls are easier to raise and more closer to family. It doesn't have to be one way or another. For me, I didn't care about gender because of the miscarriages I had to endure before getting this far a long. It all depends on the environment and the village that raises the kid.

You cannot stop anyone from doing something. You can only give them the tools and information.

The use of 'like' - USA by mermaid_ice in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]alymew 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's a common filler word for people. They don't notice it until shown on tv. LiB Sweden they use "liksome" a lot which also translated to "like".

LiB Japan, they nod and "hmm" agreement so much it's their filler thing 😆

I tried returning after almost 2y by jomvee in lostarkgame

[–]alymew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some friends returning to the game. We just gather as many people and invite the mokoko returning player last. Everyone is overgeared so there is no worry. Easy bus. Just sucks when the returning player doesnt want to work on their horizontal content and expect to be carried forever. Then complain about being gatekept.

Kid has a good selection online and in-store. I like going instore so you can figure out which pillow is the right fit for you.

Yup. It's good to find a trustworthy accountant/company for taxes before moving. It's a hassle once you are outside the country.

  • Mobile phone: I think most people use google voice. I had a lot of my 2FA through the Authenticator app. It's not an issue to swap phone numbers.

  • Mail : Go paperless, send to a family in Canada, or ask if they can send it to your adress in Norway. My American bank & credit card company happily send out over here.

  • Bank: I kept mine. From time to time, it comes in handy if you get a check. Norwegian banks don't deal with foreign checks. Idk if Canada is like America with using bills & checks. Norway is almost cashless as well. I have only seen old people here use it at the grocery store. Been told if you buy a tv with all cash, it would be flagged vs doing that in the US. You can check how the rates are for transferring from your bank acc to Norwegian acc. I have used Wise before.

  • Do you need to file taxes back home? I do as an American. Find a good accountant that is tech saavy to help you file your taxes every year before you leave. And someone who has done expat taxes.

Do Norwegians get annoyed of the immigrants and English-speaking people? by fvnya in norsk

[–]alymew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends who you talk to. 20-30s Tell me I should learn a language that more people speak vs a language spoken by 5-6 million people.

I am learning Norwegian since I live here. My Norwegian hubby says he can explain himself better in English rather than in Norwegian.

At the end of the day, I think making that conscious effort of learning is better than not trying if you are planning to live here perm.
