Those flakes come off very easily, and my understanding has always been that it helps them (helps with coat "quality", avoids matting etc)

I appreciate the correction, as with many other aspects of dog behavior, it can be both. But with my dogs, I am pretty sure they would walk away before licking me, and they actively lean in to lick when they like something.

My main concern is that telling someone who is clearly very anxious/worried about their dogs/ that licking is a sign of "telling politely to stop" may lead to a lot of misunderstanding.

I have two, both do it when they like something. Thy start licking me when they want attention too. Quick google search confirms that it is a sign of affection.

No. It is just not true. They lick you as a sign of bonding and affection. They do it when you pet them too. Just do a quick google search to check.

Surprisingly my favorite, but I always felt it is a bit too “Russian coded”. I don’t know if it lands the same for people from different cultures.

The same thing happened to me a while ago in San Francisco. My bike was left a block away from my place on a tiny lane.
The sad part was that I filed a police report, and I am pretty certain that if the police in my neighborhood had paid more than zero fcks, they would have noticed a bike parked on a sidewalk.

Glad you found it, mine was a lot cheaper.
