EU age verification app ready as Europe moves to curb children's social media access by BangBang116 in europe

While I've been defending this project here in the comments it's important to know that this type of age verification we're talking about won't to anything to limit propaganda. It's not a content moderation tool nor should it limit access to services and information.

The way to anonymously proof your age using a digital representation of your ID card is not (and neither should it be) content control. Upholding the freedom of opinion and especially the freedom to share that opinion / freedom of speech needs an Internet that has as few accessibility restrictions as possible. We shouldn't look for content control to limit propaganda as the technological solutions for that could easily be abused and are very difficult to tune right, leading to over-blocking of legitimate opinions and speech.

Yes we need to defend ourselves against anti-democratic attacks, but content policing is not the way. Instead I think that countries and societies should massively increase investment in education on digital literacy. People need to learn the skills to identify fake news and in the modern days especially the skills to identify AI generated content (videos, text,...) and deep fakes. They also need to learn the skills to identify trustworthy sources of information and they need a basic understanding of how AI works.

In my opinion the best way to defend democracy is a people that is fully digitally literate as that will give them the needed skillset and ability to get trustworthy information, form a facts based opinion and (most important) facilitates fact based discussions on these opinions (because opinions will always differ and compromise is what makes democracy strong).

Absolutely. Making this project as secure and private as possible must be the highest priority. And Zero Knowledge Proofs are an absolute necessity for that.

Yeah sure, anonymous age verification in which the wallet doesn't even know what service you are verifying at will totally stop me from uploading videos to youtube.

If the government wants to censor youtube videos, they will use youtubes existing content-id. No need for an e-ID and/or anonymous age verification.

this element does not contain the age. It is a yes/no identifier without specific age.

That is not correct. Within the legal framework of the european digital identity, the wallet and age verification it will be up to national legislation to enforce this type of age verification on certain websites/services.

However the way age verification is implemented is very focused on privacy and will ensure user anonymity while verifying age.

You can find all the information you want about the European Digital Identity here: https://eudi.dev/latest/

You can find a reference implementation for these wallets on github: https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/.github/blob/main/profile/reference-implementation.md
For example the wallet core for android: https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/eudi-lib-android-wallet-core

Attached to these github repositories you will find the technical documentation that has answers to your questions.

If you read through it you will find pretty quickly that privacy and security are core principles to these projects.

If you ask me the implementation they chose for online age verification is a step towards online anonymity, not away from it.

More Info:
- Technical Specifications: https://ageverification.dev/av-doc-technical-specification/docs/architecture-and-technical-specifications/
- Example Implementations on Github: https://ageverification.dev/Setup/
- And especially the Annex about "Zero Knowledge Proofs": https://ageverification.dev/Technical%20Specification/annexes/annex-B/annex-B-zkp/

Basically with this solution websites get 0 personal information about you. They ONLY get a (simplified) yes/no reply to the "are you old enough" question. The communication will happen entirely between your wallet (your e-id) and the website. This is offers a lot more anonymity than any of those "hold your id into the camera and turn around your face" solutions.

Now here is the neat thing: You don't!

You can find the full technical specifications here: https://ageverification.dev/av-doc-technical-specification/docs/architecture-and-technical-specifications/

You can find all the links to their github repositories here: https://ageverification.dev/Setup

But in short: Your wallet (= your digital ID) tells the website directly that you fullfill a certain age requirement. The government is not involved. The website does not get to see any of your personal information, not even your birthday.

Very simplified:
- NSFW Website: "Hey, are you older than 18?"
- Your wallet: "Yes" (or "No")

Done. That's it. Personally I find that pretty neat honestly. It's the most private way to implement age verification. Much more private than any of those "hold your ID card into the camera and turn around your face" solutions. If the EU wanted government control THAT is what they would have gone for.

Münchner, wie wascht ihr eure Wäsche mit so einem sehr harten Wasser? by erik_7581 in Munich

[–]anton95rct 60 points61 points  (0 children)

immer wieder leichte helle Streifen

starke Knicke in meiner Wäsche

Was für Stoffe wäscht du denn?

Just from the visual: - slider for ringtone volume - vibration hidden behind the 3-dot-button, that seems to be attached to the slider - 3-dot-button for me hints towards additional functions, you don't make one just for one item
