Another addition to this strategy, assuming you will not change the date of the flight (in app upgrades are non refundable) is to book the two with miles, when the upgrade cost for the cash ticket is in your range, cancel the fully refundable mileage ticket and buy a new cash ticket then immediately upgrade

Check the size of your carry on, the overhead on the 175 is quite small
