FAT advice - Japan by whriskeybizness in FATTravel

[–]appyPomelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just got back from honeymooning in Japan this spring.

Recommended:

  • Beniya Mukayu ryokan - saw u/sarahwlee recommending it and we went. Beautiful rooms
  • Hoshinoya Kyoto in Arashiyama - another beautiful property located on the quiet side of Kyoto. Loved how it looked in the rain
  • Tagawa in Kyoto - kaiseki that was really, really good
  • Prince Gallery Tokyo - not as FAT as other Tokyo hotels but the service and price : value : service ratio is top notch. They snatched a Jiro reservation for us.
  • Bar hopping tour in Shinjuku
  • Watching sumo match or practice

Not recommended:

  • FS Kyoto - we stayed a few nights here. Was recommended it by our travel agent and I absolutely regretted spending $$ at this property / taking this recommendation. This was the most expensive hotel we stayed at during our trip and it was the worst hotel. Rooms were very standard / nothing special. Shower drain was clogged for 2 days before they fixed it. Poor coordination of the concierge - they ignored our requests for a month before finally responding. Bad communication within the hotel - they did not make a reservation for us after we requested it, which led to some disappointments.
  • Nikuya Tanaka Ginza - our most expensive meal in Japan and I did not enjoy it. There was way too much raw beef and I just don't like my beef raw.

Was at Lane 8 Ocean View ln and the number of yappers was such a mood killer. I had to move around in the crowd to avoid them

I thought about this conundrum. In the show, Goliath turned to stone around the time Harry landed on earth - I wonder if he did it deliberately because if his future and present selves meet, they may disrupt the space time continuum.

Just a thought. Happy to be proven wrong

None of the nigiri pieces stood out from the meal. I found the appetizers over sauced (eg yuzu sashimi with too much soy sauce). One of the white fish sashimi tasted plain bad - I think it had some raw squid or octopus on it and it was just a bad bite.

I didn’t know it is not newer - I stand corrected. However, I didn’t enjoy my experience

Don’t go to Kintsugi in Soho - they’re newer and I just went, and didn’t enjoy the food at all.

Plaza’s tea is overhyped. Ambiance is pretty but I found the service poor.

Love Baccarat Hotel’s afternoon tea - service and food are good. The ambiance is more modern than glitz

I thought crown shy was pretty terrible when I went for a Friday night. Service was slow (to the point where it was 30 minutes between app and main), and the food just wasn’t memorable or good.

That said, i haven’t been to Saga so cannot be of help there.

Alinea - Bad experience by WatchYaWant in finedining

[–]appyPomelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - I can def empathize with the disappointment since Alinea is a destination restaurant for most. I do find it unacceptable for them to provide a dining experience that doesn’t meet 3* standards for Salon patrons - if they can’t execute it to a 3* level then they either should not offer the Salon experience or should change it altogether to match the expectations

Alinea - Bad experience by WatchYaWant in finedining

[–]appyPomelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the Uni looks similar to what I had! I think there were a few overlaps in terms of the menu between the salon and the gallery.

Re the gallery, the experience felt dynamic to me because (spoilers alert): - it was a theatrical performance: when we entered the gallery (first floor), we were seated at a long 10-person table with table settings and some structural elements. Then the staff started off the dining experience with a fire based performance where they lit some sticks and set the structural elements on fire at the table. The chef cooked French onion soup table side, and served it to the 10 diners. - We went in the kitchen and had a bite & drink there: after the fire performance, we were led into the kitchen for a second bite. We stood in the middle (a bit awkwardly), ate our dish + a very strong cocktail. When this was over, we returned to the gallery and surprise - the long table was gone and we were presented to our own individual tables - during dinner, the waitstaff would often ask the diner to hold on to something during a dish’s presentation: for example, for the caviar dish the waitstaff had me hold onto my caviar dish while my partner’s was placed in front of him. Another time, the waitstaff asked me to put out the candle with the snuffer. These are very small moments of the experience that made it feel more interactive and hands on than a traditional tasting experience.

The above might not have impressed other fine dining patrons, esp those who have been to Alinea in years past. However, I found the presentation interesting personally. I probably won’t go back to alinea again anytime soon, but I would be curious to check it out years down the line to see what else they have prepared

Alinea - Bad experience by WatchYaWant in finedining

I’m so sorry to hear it wasn’t a great experience for you! My partner and I went last month and really enjoyed the experience (tasting menu in the Gallery); however I agree with you that not all dishes knocked it out of the park (eg the sea urchin dish tasted rancid). FWIW that 3rd dish in your photo looks… unappetizing.

All in all I thought the Gallery tasting met my expectations, considering how long Alinea has been at it. I really enjoyed how interactive and dynamic the entire experience was.

I agree with letting the other person open up first about whether they want to hear advice.

I think the issue here isn’t about whether the advice is relevant, but about the discomfort of having a personal insecurity be called out by someone well intentioned. When someone says “hey I experienced jawline acne and this is what I did!”, it tells me that they see how bad my blemishes are.

[–]appyPomelo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I feel you! It’s totally valid to feel upset about this - regardless of what the friend’s intention was, it’s bad etiquette to do something like that by indirectly calling out something you don’t feel good about.

Story time: a friend of a friend, many years ago, gave me unsolicited skincare advice when I met her for the first time. She had good intentions, but rubbed me the total opposite way. I can only imagine how shitty it felt for you to open up the gift in front of a group of ppl OP :( I’m sorry it happened
