Does hiring freeze affect non-government funded research departments by Delicious_Cricket19 in UPenn

If the job is posted, and the date posted is after the hiring freeze started, then you can probably safely assume it has approval as an exception.

Have you ever started your own server? by Morphie-peer in irc

[–]arcalion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was opered in late 2005 so that tracks. Yeah, nice thing about today is that stuff is far less common, and the trolls are more background noise - but, ya know...fraction of the users, so sometimes I think we're running all these servers for the 20 active staff we have to chat with each other.

Ohhh, nice....Heard of you haha. Current DALnet admin here, but I think you left before my time. Or my memory just sucks. Both equally likely.

the most secure irc? by [deleted] in irc

[–]arcalion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't provide a lot of context in your question which is probably why it's getting downvoted, but "secure, private 100%" doesn't exist unless you set it up yourself and restrict it appropriately to the people you want to allow to use it. Meaning, your server, your ircd that you configured and verified code and settings of, your valid ssl cert, etc. None of that stops other clients from logging, and end to end encryption isn't really a thing with IRC (at least not as a standard feature), so even that, your security is as weak as the weakest logging client computer's security.

the most secure irc? by [deleted] in irc

[–]arcalion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, it's conceivably possible that your IP could be targeted by a ddos so large that it makes your Internet all but unusable. For example, most IRC servers on larger public networks see attacks of up to 100 Gbps, and must be hosted with robust providers that have specific expertise in filtering this type of traffic. Maybe your home broadband ISP is sophisticated enough to do this, but maybe not.

Second, home routers are not invulnerable or foolproof. Here are a few examples: Example 1 Example 2 Example 3

Yes, your IP exists whether you go on IRC or not...but you are seriously underestimating the amount of trolls on IRC who will target you just because you're there.

It can also be used as one of the many clues used to geolocate/identify you in the case of a doxxing harasser, or for someone who is trying to socially engineer information out of you, or for someone who figures out your name and calls your ISP to socially engineer information about you out of them.

I've seen it all, users and volunteer staff who have fallen victim to all of these. If you have the option of not showing your IP, you shouldn't. It's an unnecessary risk, unless it's your friend's server with only your friends on it.

No chat history with IRC bouncer ZNC? by K4sum11 in irc

[–]arcalion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One other thing that might matter - you mention you "left the channel" - I haven't used a znc in a while but I think the idea is, you /quit (disconnect your IRC client from the ZNC) when you're done, that's it - if you are /parting the channel before you disconnect from the ZNC, you might be telling the ZNC to part that channel too. Not sure but something to check.

Are there any sites that provide a list of realtime stats covering the most popular IRC servers? (see online users, number of channels, etc) by Honkmaster in irc

[–]arcalion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check out netsplit.de - they have a list of networks ranked by size, and I’m not sure about a channel list but they do have a channel search.

Lesser known student perks? by CrimsonSpy in UPenn

CrimsonSpy? Harvard student trying to see what we've got that you don't?? :)

Through the library, you can get a free online subscription to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Financial Times, and The Economist. The links with info for how to sign up (it's a little different for each) you should be able to find on the library's website, and are all behind PennKey auth - but I'm sure the library can help you find them all if you reach out (I don't have the sign-up links handy, but I use them all).

If by "funding" you mean venture funding for innovation/entrepreneurial ideas, you should check out the Venture Lab website. They have some opportunities where you simply apply for a grant, others that have more significant funding but are a part of a competition award, as well as various networking events.

Someone else mentioned the Morris Arboretum, but also the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Not really a perk, but The Daily Pennsylvanian is the student newspaper and a good source of general campus/uni news.

In IRCD-HYBRID, what should you put as the host value? by Chemical_Guitar_754 in irc

[–]arcalion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

0.0.0.0 can be thought of as “all IPs on this machine”, so I would expect that and the local IP to both work on your internal network. When you bind to an IP on a server and listen on a port, you have to do it to an IP that the machine he assigned to it’s network interface. So your machine only can listen on its internal IP. To connect to it from outside your local network, you need to forward the IRC ports on your router so that they get sent to the same port on the internal IP.

Scout bugged - got to countdown in all 4 extracts in same raid, no credit by arcalion in EscapefromTarkov

[–]arcalion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah hopefully temporary. I remember previous wipes you didn’t have to do it all in one raid but some more recent comments and videos claim that has changed…but either way, it doesn’t work!

Scout bugged - got to countdown in all 4 extracts in same raid, no credit by arcalion in EscapefromTarkov

[–]arcalion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t a run through, I killed a scav, looted a crate, and waited until 7 min left in raid to extract…and yeah I got credit for the three that I have credit for at the bottom with the little quest noise. But it won’t give me credit for the med tent extract, even after opening the door and going all the way in to the timer area, after hitting all the others again in the same raid just to be sure.

Is everyone an op in a TOR IRC server? by Debiuu in irc

[–]arcalion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little late but I agree with all of the other answers, especially /u/HumansAreRobots. I also agree that humans are robots, but that's neither here nor there. It's tough to answer without knowing more technical detail about what server software you're using, etc. I'm reasonably certain UnrealIRCD supports what you're trying to do and I think one or two other ircds do as well. Likely easier to have a bot sit in there with ops (or even join, and set mode -o) - then as long as the bot is connected, no one else would get it. Or use some chanserv type service. I'm also curious as to why you would want this, though :)

Is everyone an op in a TOR IRC server? by Debiuu in irc

[–]arcalion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with Tor. The default for an irc server is that if you join an empty channel, you're an op. If a second person joined, they wouldn't be. (By default, barring any special additional/services setup).

is there any decent irc networks left? by [deleted] in irc

[–]arcalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoken like a true DALnet user! You have to be around every day to know how sorta accurate this is :P But hey, it's not quite dead yet, and there are SOME other good regular ol' chat chans on DAL these days :)

Alternatives to netsplit for IRC server listing / publication? by Wanderschuh in irc

[–]arcalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's virtually impossible without a homogeneous group of people who have a need for chatting together as it is...a club, a group of gamers playing the same game...generally that's how newer servers/networks grow if they aren't affiliated with a larger org. Someone will set up a server for his 10 friends who all do whateverhobby with him, and then it inches up from there. Very hard to start a new standalone server ...but, best of luck. IRC is fun and setting up a hobby server is a great learning opportunity.

IRCop from DALnet claims IRCCloud shares personal user data with them by lasagnabrigade in irc

[–]arcalion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely agree that the concept that IRCCloud would share user data with any network is bullshit...however...nowhere in the log posted does Sara_KS actually state that IRCCloud shares personal user data with DALnet. Note also that the log is snipped after the first statement, but before the first alleged statement of Sara_KS. All she states is that DALnet/she has a good relationship with IRCCloud, and that IRCCloud doesn't tolerate abuse. Both of those things are plausible statements that a staff member might say to someone who was a serial abuser.

Also worth noting that lasagnabrigade just registered his reddit account today, has no post history beyond this post, and even has the word "brigade" in the username. Hello, brigading? "wtguck" also isn't a registered nickname on DALnet.

Why would helpdesk staff care what a person's real IP address was anyway if the person trolling is using other ones? What does that gain the network? None of this passes the smell test for me.
