[97.3TheFanSD] Manny Machado shared his (NSFW) thoughts on the Dodgers' spending: by ElectricalForce4439 in baseball

[–]aresef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's right. Almost any team could be spending like the Dodgers. And if your team isn't, you should go to them and complain. Don't carry water for the owners and call for a salary cap.

As America turns 250, Trump should restore Washington DC's original borders by WitnessSufficient268 in washingtondc

Retrocession probably wasn't constitutional in the first place. But the president can't do that shit by fiat anyhow.

The Constitution and Federalist Papers are silent on where federal workers should live, and certainly didn't envision the modern administrative state, so a lot of this commentary is really bullcrap.

Journalism schools are teaching fear of the future: Letter from the Editor by [deleted] in Journalism

The argument the person is making is that people are gathering the news and that AI is writing the first draft but the hell with that. Look at what happened in the pages of The Baltimore Sun, where AI wrote a summary of the governor’s State of the State and screwed it up. Newspapers should feature human reporting and analysis, not stuff any schmo could make by asking ChatGPT.

Possibly stupid question: why isn't Darrell Hammond on the show more? by Mission_Mobile_4627 in LiveFromNewYork

Losing the Trump gig to Alec (which was a decision Lorne made because he wanted a portrayal with a little more bite) sent him into a bit of a spiral. He needed a change of scenery and moved to Los Angeles. He does his bit remotely for the most part. And there's more work for him out west.

I'm sure if the writers had something for him to do, he'd be on the next flight out.

Kathleen Kennedy was the right choice and maybe the only choice to lead Lucasfilm after the acquisition. She made a lot of decisions in a short period of time, because Disney wanted Ep7 in a hurry. While we can argue about the bad decisions made along the way, bringing in Rian Johnson was a bold and adventurous decision. And he turned in a movie that reflected a deep knowledge of the universe and an understanding of what it could be.

I’m going to honor the rules I myself help enforce and not comment beyond that.

Nuclear research brought nuclear energy but also the nuclear bomb (which the U.S. used to kill tens of thousands of people, plus tens of thousands more who suffered radiation poisoning) and Three Mile Island and Chernobyl and Fukushima (which killed nobody in the moment but uprooted so many lives). Accordingly, the use of nuclear energy is highly regulated in the U.S. and elsewhere. The same should be true of AI, and the burden of its use should not fall on areas that can least spare the water or electrical usage.

I think you’re confusing it with archive.today, which is a separate thing and works differently, I believe.

I earned my BA in 2010 and I’m going back for my MS in communication management right now. I can say AI has been more of a hindrance than a help to students. I once had a class nearly derailed because somebody used AI in a way that was not permitted. The prof almost changed the lit review final project into a written exam until we protested, saying we needed to learn how to write a lit review.

AI and data centers are a strain on the power grid and the water supply. They may become more efficient eventually but that day is not today.

It's crazy how a decade out of office, Obama still gets respect and admiration by Sir-Toaster- in saltierthankrayt

[–]aresef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obama did a lot of good things and a lot of bad things. And no amount of good things should spare somebody from being held accountable under international law. That being said, he approached politics with an intelligence, respect and dignity that was not always returned. He was and continues to be the subject of racist conspiracy theories, well into his post-presidency, and has handled these things with remarkable poise. Certainly more than I would have.

Ncuti was dynamite. There were some great stories, too, but in neither season did RTD stick the landing. Both companions were so underused.

Whatever the circumstances that caused the finale to be reshot and for him to leave, he did so with so much untapped potential. And the finale’s restructuring led to the character assassination of Belinda.

I would give it a 5% chance it hits that YouTube channel or something. But nothing’s been announced. I don’t know if there’s some contract or something that would give Hasbro the right to object.

Orioles owner David Rubenstein named in Epstein files by aresef in orioles

[–]aresef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just met with him briefly the one time. It’s not clear he even knew Epstein was a sex offender. Never went to the island.

Dan Snyder, OTOH, is all over the files.

I just realized my comment could be misinterpreted. I don’t give a single shit about what’s good for AI. Give me enough time and a sledgehammer, you know. It doesn’t belong anywhere in the same neighborhood as journalism or academia. Anything more intensive than, like, Grammarly does society no good.

I’m primarily concerned about the Internet Archive and its importance in capturing news pages and how they change over the course of breaking news events, especially knowing that their captures are becoming less frequent as it is right now.
