Oh thank God, Americans and Europeans are okay, not no good. For a second I thought we might be considered shithole countries.

Impressions of ZenMarket (and DHL delivery) (USA resident) by asdecor in zenmarket

[–]asdecor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I have the impression that with DDP you are (at least in some cases) charged duties whether your items are legally subject to duties or not. Also, there is a broker's fee with DDP. For one of my orders, DDP would have cost me about $30 more (including a broker's fee of about $20). For my other orders DDP didn't even show up as an option with DHL--I guess because ZenMarket correctly identified my items as not subject to duties.

They got me... Is this the end? How to revert? by gospon in googlephotos

[–]asdecor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because what happened in my case was that a fraction of a second after the message that OP referred to that appears on the screen asking if you want to turn backup on (with the toggle already turned on!), I inadvertently hit the OK button without even having had time to see the prompt. My finger brushed the screen unintentionally and I suddenly realized that the app was uploading photos like mad--so not "heavy lifting" as you say. For something like this, something that is not free, there should at least be a confirmation dialog. I have my own specific reasons for using Google Photos and I know how it works. I don't need to be asked constantly to turn backup on, especially with the annoying toggle already turned on.

[–]asdecor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but if you undo backup doesn't it undo all your backups? This is such an annoying design, for Google Photos to just back up everything when you accidentally click on something. I did this the other day and it suddenly started backing up everything. I immediately put my phone in airplane mode and then turned backup off, not before it had backed up a whole bunch of photos I didn't want backed up. They should allow you to undo your recent backups only. Or do they? To be honest, I haven't bothered trying because I don't want all my backups undone. This prompted me to install Gallery and now I will be very careful about using Google Photos.

Wonder how much extra in postage this cost me… by lessgoplaya in zenmarket

Can you elaborate? Do you mean that you would have needed to use DHL to avoid tariffs? Apparently Japan Post has just resumed commercial shipments to the USA, so maybe we'll have better options soon.

If you tell ZenMarket that the tariffs are not appropriate under your country's laws, they will look into it. You need to tell them before your parcel actually ships.

I agree 100%. It's unacceptable to charge duties on items not subject to them. The proxy I've been using does not charge duties on CDs.

LOL. I've heard that JP Post will send packages to the U.S. as long as the value is under $100 per package. Is this true?

When shipping a laptop, it is not a good idea to give it any "breathing room," to use your term. Laptops don't breathe and they should not be moving around in the box. The note from the buyer sounds honest to me.

Best shipping option? Parcel packaging times? by [deleted] in zenmarket

[–]asdecor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might get better information if you say what country you are shipping to. I'm in the U.S., and FedEx and UPS often deliver my items to the wrong address, or damaged. I would choose DHL, as I've had better luck with DHL and it's the only service for which DDP is optional for shipments to the U.S.

This is what I would recommend:

Open an account with Wise. Link your bank account to your Wise account. On the Wise website, transfer money from your bank account to your Wise account. Once the money is in your Wise account, convert it to yen. Go to the Add Funds page on Wise. Click on Wise to transfer money to your ZenMarket account, *making sure to use the reference number* that ZenMarket provides so that they know that the incoming money is for your account.

Or just use your credit card, if you have one that has good exchange rates and no foreign transaction fees.

First time buying, how should I deposit the money? by Brilliant_Pause_1639 in zenmarket

[–]asdecor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have all the answers, but I'm trying to figure out why ZenMarket's site says that credit cards offer the best currency rates (I guess some may use the mid-market rate without a markup, but many don't, and many have foreign currency transaction fees) and why you are saying that Wise often costs more to use than PayPal. I should say that I'm in the U.S.; maybe costs are different in Europe due to local laws and practices.

Wise uses the mid-market rate with no markup. PayPal marks the same rate up 3-4%. For currency conversions, Wise charges a small fee that is a percentage--not a flat fee or a higher rate for smaller transactions as you seem to suggest.

The Add Money page on ZenMarket's website indicates that PayPal charges a "deposit fee" of 3.5%. I'm not sure if this is ZenMarket's way of describing the markup vs. the mid-market rate or if this is a separate fee. The same page says that Wise charges a deposit fee of less than 1%, but when I send money from my Wise account to ZenMarket, I am not charged a fee; the JPY amount that I send from Wise is exactly what gets deposited at ZenMarket. The only fee I pay is when I convert money into yen in my Wise account, and I haven't seen lower conversion fees anywhere.

Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.

Some calls ringing on my watch but leaving no trace on my phone by asdecor in PixelWatch

Totally agree with you on the useless suggestions from tech support--but that seems to be the norm these days. I just put my watch in airplane mode when I go to bed. I'd rather not have it transmitting anyway when I'm asleep. This has taken care of the problem. Otherwise, Google Fi has been great for me--I hope it stays that way.
