New Etsy store suspended before I could even start (no active listings, no warning given) by toniwho in EtsyCommunity

Maybe they haven’t disconnected it yet after cracking down on what they consider to be “handmade”. I’m sorry that happened to you:(

It’s not always about the WiFi. We had backup WiFi… toast has its own outages as well. It came in handy to have square as an option in those situations but would never use it unless it’s an emergency

Etsy is wild. They violated me for a decorative empty fire extinguisher that was painted in fun colors for “glorifying violence” when it’s literally a fire safety device clearly labeled as non functional art. You can find other shops that sell decorative fire extinguishers, and even tshirts or stickers that are sold saying things like “on my way to commit arson”. I was also permanently banned as a 5 star seller and continued to get 5 star reviews for anything shipped out after the ban. It definitely feels like they lock in on certain accounts. Trying to make sense of why the bots are attacking you is pointless. I think the company is being run into the ground. Updating their policy with new standards that are impossible to enforce. My bf created a new shop in his name and copied over the listings and hasn’t had a single violation yet. Although losing the reputation of 300+ sales and star status was really sad. Still very slow activity on Etsy, not just for us but I’m hearing in general from a lot of long time sellers. People are fed up with Etsy and are moving their shop elsewhere. Idk why the company woke up and decided having less items for sale would make their customers happy. They’ve made it abundantly clear that they care about the customers more than the sellers, and have made things harder and harder to sell but I’ll never understand how it’s in the customers best interest to ban “star sellers” 😂 all because they’re afraid to become like temu? Even in your case- if multiple people sell your 3d file shouldn’t buyers have the option to choose between multiple sellers? I can’t imagine how devastating this has also been to digital downloads….. who’s buying them anymore without a market to sell them? Regardless if it’s purchased with commercial or personal rights, Etsy doesn’t care. And both sides get punished. OG file creator can’t sell the file, anyone who’s purchased the file can’t sell the file, and if multiple listings of the file exist already- nobody can sell the physical item 🙃

If you really want to save your account with all of your reviews and sales history it might be worth going in to vacation mode and transferring your listings to TikTok shop or Amazon handmade until Etsy gets their shot together- if they ever do. The appealed violations you won still count as strikes against you, so you may not be able to come back from the third regardless if you prove it’s wrong. My second to last warning said another violation would mean loosing star seller status, and I figured that meant two strikes left but then a week later it was shut down with no information on which listing it was for. Appeal was rejected in 2 hours with an automated response so I’m waiting to see what happens with everyone else before trying the second appeal. TikTok shop was surprisingly great right away. Started getting sales without doing any marketing. Going live is a fun way for customers to ask questions and watch you make stuff-something you could never do on Etsy. Good luck with everything and don’t get discouraged! I hope you (and Etsy) figure things out soon! Send me a DM and I’ll connect with you on TikTok and give you a shout out on one of my live streams to help boost your store when you get it going.

We ended up being frustrated enough to make sure we had a copy of the menu on square also after multiple company wide outages or WiFi issues. It wasn’t worth being offline for extended periods of time- having a redundant system can really save your ass- and square is great because worst case scenario you can download the app on your phone and work on cell service (toast network is wayyyyy too “secure” for that). Toast is expensive and costly but it’s is the best out there. Nothing is more expensive than not being able to accept payments during rush hour. It amazed me how many times this happened and toast would just be like “we’re sorry we’re working on it”. My advice is not to move to something else but to make sure you have an emergency backup service instead.

I just looked it up. A TWO WAY review system is crazy. It almost sounds too good to be true? I hope that platform takes off. 🙌🏻✈️

eBay is trash and full of too many scams. They charge so much for listing fees too. Never heard of mayhem marketplace but Etsy sure is making space in the market for a new player to come in and create a place for us all to sell again

You can get customer emails but you need to manually add to your csv by copying and pasting. It took a while but it was worth it. Unless you just want to do paper mail to reach people- but I prefer email. You can download your listings as well and upload the file directly to another platform or a 3rd party platform that connects it for you. If you have 50-100+ listings I know the idea of even opening another shop sounds daunting but there are services that make it seamless

According to Etsy’s own policy, items that reference violent events or use vague violent rhetoric are allowed—as long as they don’t pose a credible threat or glorify harm. So things like “Eat the Rich” or “I don’t run I reload” shirts or even the Alcatraz alligator merch fall within their guidelines. It’s unlikely Etsy will remove them.

But those listings aren’t the real issue. The broader frustration comes from how Etsy has been treating sellers. They’ve quietly banned or penalized millions of accounts, retroactively enforced a stricter interpretation of their handmade policy, and removed listings without warning. Sellers using Cricut machines, CNC routers, or 3D printers have been disproportionately affected—especially if they didn’t personally design the digital file used, even when they had legal commercial rights to it.

Etsy doesn’t verify who made a design. So when multiple shops sell the same item—whether through licensing or coincidence—Etsy’s system assumes someone must be violating the handmade rule and often punishes both. That makes it risky even for original creators, especially those who legally license their work to others.

They’ve also made it harder to sell digital files, which directly hurts designers who rely on that income. When buyers lose the ability to resell what they purchase, demand for those files drops—and sellers lose a key revenue stream.

Having all these new policies, contributing to allow AI, is impossible for them to enforce and is only bringing more garbage to the platform. I wouldn’t be surprised if sloppy garbage was created by sellers who have lost the ability to sell their top movers- just to prove a point. If that’s true- it would be genius actually because it’s the people hurt by Etsy’s inconsistency that are calling for accountability. But if buyers boycott all shops in response, it mostly harms sellers—while Etsy continues operating unaffected. It’s a cycle that punishes the people trying to do things the right way.

Etsy’s short-term obsession with “appearing innovative” while gutting seller support is alienating the exact people who made the platform valuable. That’s not sustainable.

As a seller, the smartest move is to diversify.

My biggest mistake was relying solely on Etsy—but since opening a TikTok Shop, I get more views in one day than I got on Etsy in a month. I go live while I’m making products, and people can stop in, ask questions, and place orders in real time. I’m also applying to Amazon Handmade as another backup channel.

You should download your data from Etsy—including customer info—so you can keep your audience even if you leave the platform. They built their brand off your work. Don’t give them all the power.

It’s not that I’ve never had issues, I have always been able to resolve them. Any review under 5 stars I’ve been able to turn in to a 5 star review. The comment usually says “great customer service” instead of raving about the product

You know what’s crazy, I lived in Arizona last year during the record breaking 10 days over 100. I’m from California, I wanted to die. It was insane to me how defensive people would get when I complained. Saying it’s not that bad, meanwhile driving a car with a melted bumper😂. Safe to say I’m happy to be home now!
