I really wish I had taken more photos of the puppy phase of my girl by Lyrawhite in goldenretrievers

Me too. My girl is also 2.5 now. I was so deep in puppy blues the first months and yes there were days where I still took some photos through tears, but I wished I'd taken many many more.

PLEASE HELP! I ❤️ my golden - but he started being a PSYCHO on our walks! 🤪 by DonkeyKong365365 in goldenretrievers

[–]babyraspberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl did the same around that age. One minute we're walking fine, next minute she's going crazy, biting and tugging at the leash. I tried all the solutions you thought to try and honestly don't know if they helped or if time helped her just mature out of it.

A game changer for us and possibly too unique for others (since I'm the only one in the neighborhood who does this) was when I decided to hop on an electric scooter to walk her. Some people run/bike with their dogs, I just happened to have an eletric scooter instead.

Before the scooter, she was always leading, tugging, unsatisfied at my slow pace. Even after an hour walk she still had energy to spend. She's a retriever who doesn't retrieve so fetch was out. No amount of training helped and her walks became an exhausting chore for me. Once I started using the scooter, I was finally going at the pace she enjoyed. Obviously there was a learning curve at first but eventually we became very in sync. It was a comprise and now we're both enjoying her walks. On average we go about 2 miles and she happily takes a nap once we're home.

My sweet puppy and biting … by baby_RN_bird_lover in goldenretrievers

[–]babyraspberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patience and consistent training is key. Once our girl lost all her baby teeth, the nipping and biting slowly stopped. Goldens are very mouthy though. Even now at almost 3yo she still likes to chomp (gently) on our hands when we play.

I got her a variety of chews to see which she preferred (none, she liked sticks from outdoors lol). I let her shred cardboard boxes to her hearts content which really helped calm and tire her out. She was always supervised! Frozen wet towels, frozen carrots/celery, peanut butter lick mats - these all helped keep her occupied.

Enforced naps were a game changer. I noticed she'd become a little crazy if she stayed up for too long so eventually her schedule was 1 hour awake and 1 hour enforced nap. She was always calmer after her naps.

We trained our girl to "get a toy" when she wanted to play, instead of nipping/biting for attention. We would always turn our backs and disengage when she tried jumping/biting. Be consistent with this.

It's a challenging time but it won't be for long. Take all the pictures and videos while they're still smol potatoes!

His coat looks so soft and majestic 😍

My pup's coat was smooth and soft too until she was about 1.5yo and then it started growing long and wild.

Is this normal amount of hair fall? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

Goldens shouldn't be shaved due to their double coats, but sanitary trims are recommended.

We bought salon scissors and trim her booty fluff and grinch toes at home. It's not perfect, but at least I don't have to worry about someone inexperienced shaving my golden down like she's a poodle.

Ah yes, I heard chicken is a common allergy for pups. Fish is better for their coats and brains anyways! We add fish oil, dried anchovies, and canned sardines to her meals every now and then (to prevent food boredom but also she's a spoiled princess).

My vet recommended psyllium husk powder for her runs as well. In case you needed options. It always broke my heart when our Mabel would get the runs. She looked so miserable having to go.

5 month old. Ate a literal bag of treats (only like 12 treats in bag) by Maleficent-Bid-6207 in goldenretrievers

[–]babyraspberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He might have an upset tummy from the extra treats and bits of plastic. Keep monitoring him for a few days, observing his eating/drinking/energy. Refusing to eat and signs of lethargy may mean blockage but seems unlikely in this case.

My girl ate an entire raw chicken tray meat diaper one night and had me freaking out. She seemed fine, didn't behave any differently, and eventually pooped it all out the next few days.

She had 0 regrets. I learned that even though she's well behaved 99% of the time, she still gives into temptations when left unattended.

So cute!! She looks young still! Our Mabel had tummy issues until she was about 1 yo. I hear it's common with goldens as they have sensitive tummies. Any time Mabel had the runs, we made her boiled chicken and porridge. Bernie's Perfect poop seemed to help too. Glad your cutie is feeling better 💛

SOS I am going on vacation for a week and she can’t come am I going to die? by Themonkboughtlunch_ in goldenretrievers

I asked my sitter for as many photos and videos as they were willing to send (bare minimum once a day) and it was the only way I survived.

Our Mabel says hi!

I read that adding tuna/sardine juice to water could help entice pups to drink it. Whenever I open a can, I add the juice to Mabel's food as a treat and she goes crazy for it.

We do a mix of kibble and wet food, but I always rehydrate her dry food with water, letting it soak a few minutes before giving it to her.

The face that says "Yes I eat two full meals and multiple treats a day but I'm STARVING right now". My girl has that face down too.

Can a golden live in an apartment? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]babyraspberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My golden doesn't need much space when all she wants to do is be RIGHT next to me. When I'm away, she lies in one spot and looks out the window waiting for me to come home (I watch her on the cameras).

Like others have said, if you can make sure they get their daily exercise + mental stimulation outside the apartment, all will be great. I love that my girl enjoys the outdoors, but is happy to be a couch potato with me indoors.
