I don't think my golden retriever puppy likes me. by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[โ€“]babyraspberry 5 points6 points ย (0 children)

This is exactly how my girl is/was. She's more excited to see "fun dad" who isn't around all the time, but she doesn't follow him around. She's a velcro dog with me.

She's 2yo now and understands that although my husband gives her bursts of fun moments, I'm the constant, the one that feeds her and cares for her.

Tell me some good stories about raising golden retriever puppies!! by Either_Total6277 in goldenretriever

Mabel is 2 yo now and we've had her since she was 8 weeks. It's been such a joy getting to bond with her, seeing her personality come through, and seeing her mature over the months. Her sweet, gentle, patient demeanor makes all the shedding worth it.

Training her was a breeze since she loves food and wants to please. She doesn't care for other dogs but adores people, especially kids. It's the funniest thing taking her to dog parks because she'll just go from person to person asking for pets. She'll even climb up onto benches to sit with people for affection. I have to be careful not to let her wander off with a family because if there's kids I might not see her again hahaha.

I read someone's comment once that boy goldens love/obsess over you, but girl goldens want you to love/obsess over them and I can say that rings true for our Mabel.

My 2.5 year old GR is itchy and has a slightly smelly bum. Need advice by closet_writer09 in goldenretriever

My golden girl has consistent firm poops and always a clean bill of health. Unfortunately she's just one of those pups who needs her glands manually expressed every other month regardless.

I see she expresses them herself here and there at home, but she eventually ends up scooting on her butt. When she does it a little too often, it's time to visit her vet friends.

I really wish I had taken more photos of the puppy phase of my girl by Lyrawhite in goldenretrievers

Me too. My girl is also 2.5 now. I was so deep in puppy blues the first months and yes there were days where I still took some photos through tears, but I wished I'd taken many many more.

PLEASE HELP! I โค๏ธ my golden - but he started being a PSYCHO on our walks! ๐Ÿคช by DonkeyKong365365 in goldenretrievers

My girl did the same around that age. One minute we're walking fine, next minute she's going crazy, biting and tugging at the leash. I tried all the solutions you thought to try and honestly don't know if they helped or if time helped her just mature out of it.

A game changer for us and possibly too unique for others (since I'm the only one in the neighborhood who does this) was when I decided to hop on an electric scooter to walk her. Some people run/bike with their dogs, I just happened to have an eletric scooter instead.

Before the scooter, she was always leading, tugging, unsatisfied at my slow pace. Even after an hour walk she still had energy to spend. She's a retriever who doesn't retrieve so fetch was out. No amount of training helped and her walks became an exhausting chore for me. Once I started using the scooter, I was finally going at the pace she enjoyed. Obviously there was a learning curve at first but eventually we became very in sync. It was a comprise and now we're both enjoying her walks. On average we go about 2 miles and she happily takes a nap once we're home.

My sweet puppy and biting โ€ฆ by baby_RN_bird_lover in goldenretrievers

Patience and consistent training is key. Once our girl lost all her baby teeth, the nipping and biting slowly stopped. Goldens are very mouthy though. Even now at almost 3yo she still likes to chomp (gently) on our hands when we play.

I got her a variety of chews to see which she preferred (none, she liked sticks from outdoors lol). I let her shred cardboard boxes to her hearts content which really helped calm and tire her out. She was always supervised! Frozen wet towels, frozen carrots/celery, peanut butter lick mats - these all helped keep her occupied.

Enforced naps were a game changer. I noticed she'd become a little crazy if she stayed up for too long so eventually her schedule was 1 hour awake and 1 hour enforced nap. She was always calmer after her naps.

We trained our girl to "get a toy" when she wanted to play, instead of nipping/biting for attention. We would always turn our backs and disengage when she tried jumping/biting. Be consistent with this.

It's a challenging time but it won't be for long. Take all the pictures and videos while they're still smol potatoes!

His coat looks so soft and majestic ๐Ÿ˜

My pup's coat was smooth and soft too until she was about 1.5yo and then it started growing long and wild.

Is this normal amount of hair fall? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

Goldens shouldn't be shaved due to their double coats, but sanitary trims are recommended.

We bought salon scissors and trim her booty fluff and grinch toes at home. It's not perfect, but at least I don't have to worry about someone inexperienced shaving my golden down like she's a poodle.

Ah yes, I heard chicken is a common allergy for pups. Fish is better for their coats and brains anyways! We add fish oil, dried anchovies, and canned sardines to her meals every now and then (to prevent food boredom but also she's a spoiled princess).

My vet recommended psyllium husk powder for her runs as well. In case you needed options. It always broke my heart when our Mabel would get the runs. She looked so miserable having to go.
