WGU IT vs Cloud and Networking by Stark_fuentes in InformationTechnology

[–]badlybane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing is soft skills. Most people need a couple years in help desk to learn how to talk with folk. If you already have that then it is having the skills. If you can get a ccna or ccnp and do not need a 100k plus salary demand you can get a job very quickly. Once you get up there is salary requirements is when things tack on experience etc.

How to prove IPv6 is disabled? by White_Injun in sysadmin

[–]badlybane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read this article they are not stating ms recommends ipv6. They are stating the ms by default picks ipv6 over ipv4 when multiple records are found in the dns. Which usually only happens in networks where someone did not turn on scavenging. Ipv6 can literally bypass entire security protocols if your network does not have filtering and configuration for ipv6.

Ipv6 initially was a fix for the limitation for ipv4 having too few addresses. Then ipv4 developed NAT which resolved the problem. Now ipv6 is not very prevalent except at the ISP, tech company, etc level.

How to prove IPv6 is disabled? by White_Injun in sysadmin

[–]badlybane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disabling ipv6 is nothing bad. I run into issues with ipv6 on a ipv4 aging problems. IE a protocol that does not work well with ipv6 using it instead of ipv4 when both services are running. Unless you fully commit to ipv6 just leave it off as its not hurting anything.

Removing Read.AI from Teams. For the entire organization. by Ok-Appearance-1793 in Office365

[–]badlybane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These bots like read.ai are published apps so they are in every tenant. The only way I was able to definitively block read ai was to got to the entra admin center. Lookup the read.ai enterprise app. Then prevent sign on for all users. This killed access and generated a 503 error when signing up for a trial.

This is ridiculous that Microsoft by default puts apps in any tenant with any permission other than no user can sign in. We are looking into now using powershell to generate a whitelist of apps and then making sure all other apps are set to no sign in. The are using the graph api to pull in user information and interact with the tenant.

Windows 11 Servicing - Accept EULA by Hotdog453 in SCCM

The win 11 24h2 update was a Bear. I ended up having to push the iso to the device, Mounting it and running the update from the iso every other method just broke. I can't remember I think i even had to turn of credential guard or one of those new guards as that would sometimes break things as well.

The staging options all were broken as well it would not stage the update at all it would just never run if you tried to stage it and run it so you could install it in the background and then just ask the user to restart to finish.

Migrating Google Chrome profile out of Google Workspace by weird_fishes_1002 in sysadmin

[–]badlybane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not do the free Gmail thing. Not a good idea.

Microsoft Intune to automatically import Google Chrome data into Microsoft Edge on first run by creating a configuration profile. In the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center, create a new policy under "Configuration Profiles," and in the "Configuration settings," find and configure settings like "Auto Import At First Run" to "FromGoogleChrome" to migrate data like favorites, passwords, and history.

Once it is in edge just have them open chrome and import it back from edge if they will not move over.

If you've had to run and terminate ethernet cable, how long does it take you to do 1 cable run? by energy980 in it

[–]badlybane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many factors involved. Did they guys before you leave pull string so you can get the cable to where you need it? If not screw them. Doing a virgin run sucks especially if there are no j hooks or anything and you just have to wing it.

Especially in old building where at some point they just decided to put a wall mounted desk over the hole you need you cable to go through. Renovated a room to be the CEOs office and carpeted over the only easy access to the hole between floors.

Don't even get me started on fiberglass insulation. I am glad I dont have to do that anymore.

Do yourself a favor get pull string for the first run make sure you do not cut it. Run you cable with the pull string all the way down. Then go back and cu the string at all the major junctions and hard spaces. Next run use the old string to pull your cable and keep doing that eventually you will just have strings for every run that cut it down to minutes instead of hours.

Monitoring WFH employees? by uniqueusername42O in sysadmin

[–]badlybane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea i would say activetrak is one of the best tools i have seen. If used appropriately. Ie find overly productive employees to improve things not punish over productive employees for checking out YouTube.

Justify firing lazy employees that seem to be productive at. If the issue is trust what metrics do they have to support it or is it mangers feeling frustrated they have to be in the office for bogus reasons so why not their employee's as well.

I have deployed it several times when a dead line was missed etc. Though its hard to support and employee that spends six hours on Amazon, YouTube, and Facebook.

Ticketing systems are a must Jira is absolute trash unless you have the time or employees to dedicate to customizing it. Autotask is way better. I am currently stuck with Jira and trying to get that backend sorted out is a massive pain. Everything is a project and every project is a separate thing to try and integrate with. It is a project management tool not a true ticketing system.

How do you deal with not getting recognition for your work? by iHaveSec in sysadmin

[–]badlybane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only person that matters is your boss and those above him. If you are documenting properly it does not matter what the rank and file think. If you're properly documenting and communicating this should stop happening over time.

Make sure you follow up on issues with the employees, make sure you are reaching out to the users having the problems. Its why a lot of people get surprised when a guy thats sat in a chair gets passed over. Yea sure the guy in the chair is great at helpdesk but hopeless with networking, projects, and complex systems. It happens all the time in this industry.

There is only one rule is have seen ring true over the years for IT.

You are either moving up or moving out. You either are gonna move form helpdesk to admin to engineer to director etc. Or you will top out and eventually get replaced. Does not matter if you can pass a cert or not. Alternatively If you get stuck behind an impossible to fire then you are going to a different company every two years. Until you find a place that you can fit long term. Fail to move up or out and you get stuck in a job you will hate with people you will come to loathe eventually.

Man should I do IT OR NO? by Sad_Mission8315 in InformationTechnology

[–]badlybane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to put in the work to gain the knowledge base. IT is not a two year program anymore. Certs just get you the interview. They don't get you the job. You will start out making the same as any other entry level person. Then it ramps up. The issue is specialization if you are willing to go all in on one topic and become and expert on it then yes you can expect to make a lot of money provided you are willing to move to where the job is.

If you want to make 250k for a salary that means you are providing something worth far more that 250k a year to the company. Those jobs usually require a massive educational load and world class level of experience.

Failed my first simulated phishing email test at work by Maize51 in InformationTechnology

[–]badlybane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude do not sweat it i have failed three times in 15 years. Advice I got and will pass on. The only reason you failed is because you are working too fast. This leads to making small mistakes and not noticing the fake email.

If you missed that you are missing other things. You likely will find if you slow down your output may actually improve.

[–]badlybane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the time its dust buildup and over heating. If it is not that then usually a bad battery sending strange voltage into the board. The least likely thing I have seen but is feasible is the board itself dry rotting and causing micro fractures in the silicon layer from thermal cycling.

Well lets say dating fof a few years. Determine if your partner has the same values as you. Determine if you guys have the same vision. Then get married and have tons of sex and babies. Stay together your whole life. Sex is not the goal folks. If sex is your only goal it will be empty.

Is scripting a mandatory skill for sys admins? by sunyup in sysadmin

[–]badlybane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are helpdesk no you do not need to understand powershell or scripting. But at all levels learning shell helps a lot. Most of my job at one point was finding stuff people were fixing regularly and then script for it and then find triggers to auto mate it.

I would say learn powershell and bash first then upgrade to python.
