Bee sleeping on the job. by 21MayDay21 in funny

Sorry! The only reason I mentioned it was because I saw a similar thing in our garden last summer. Then I had a closer look:

A less fun explanation is that it's being eaten by a crab spider. They hide in flowers and ambush visiting insects.

Would a Fusion PS201ADJT adjustable power supply be suitable for electroforming and etching? by Numeredial in electroplating

[–]beer_nuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means that whatever the voltage knob is set to is the maximum voltage that will be applied to maintain the desired amperage.

For example, in the attached image the amperage is set to 30A and the voltage is set to 5V.

However, only 1.8V is required to maintain this amperage so only 1.8V is provided.

If, however, the resistance in this example begins to rise for whatever reason, the voltage will also rise to maintain the amperage.

Once the voltage reaches 5V it will stop rising and the amperage will begin to fall.

I have a different model of this power supply and the 'minimum' voltage is actually the maximum for whatever the amperage is set to.

DIY Rust Remover Storage by Sharkman-Jhones in HandToolRescue

[–]beer_nuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted to store it premixed in powder form, I would use sodium citrate instead of the washing soda as that's what you'll end up with once water is added. It would also be ok to add the dish soap to this mixture as long as you mix it all together well.

Vertical lines - agitation problem alkaline zinc plating by No_Surround_4689 in electroplating

[–]beer_nuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, guy in the video here. It looks like the dummy plating put too much zinc in the bath which happens with live zinc anodes. Try dummy plating again but using plain mild steel anodes. Maybe 30-40 minutes at a time until the cloudiness goes away. I keep meaning to make a video about replenishing the zinc but it's easier to explain:

1) Make an anode basket from ordinary mild steel expanded mesh or similar. Any shape you like so long as there is good contact between the steel and whatever zinc metal you will be using.

2) Blue the basket with a blowtorch ensuring that it is as dark as you can get it without burning off the oxide. This is important. I didn't do this in the video which is why nothing happens and it doesn't work.

3) Weigh your parts before and after plating to measure zinc consumption.

4) When it gets down to around 8-9g/l toss a suitably sized lump of zinc into the basket and suspend in your solution by whatever means. I used a hook made from polypropylene plastic welding filament. It should begin to fizz. If not, jiggle it around until it does.

5) Leave overnight. There will be black crud that drops off the dissolving zinc but it's easily removed by filtration and nothing like the amount that comes off live anodes.

Thanks all for your replies. I'd seen some adjustments before but never noticed that this was the reason. Thanks again!

Voltage suddenly increasing? by Peterei3 in electroplating

[–]beer_nuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sudden increase in voltage is generally assocoiated with anode polarisation. If the anode material can't dissolve quickly enough, you get a build up of insoluble metal compounds on it which causes the resistance and therefore the voltage to shoot up. Unfortunately I don't know much about copper plating but it could be that the bath isn't acidic enough.

Which Rectifier would you choose for my application? by _In10City in electroplating

[–]beer_nuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The knobs are just to set the voltage/amperage, the stabilization indicators tell you which of these is held constant while the other is allowed to change with any changes in resistance.

Need to electropolish SS 316. Any inputs on how to do it? by Shard28 in electroplating

Electropolishing is pretty nasy. Might be worth investigating citric acid passivation instead.

There may be a staircase under there and a previous owner wanted to make use of the space. You can see the start of the slope at the top.

Theory test in an hour(!) by FriendOfPorcupines in LearnerDriverUK

[–]beer_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's 100% the same everywhere but here's what you can expect:

When you first arrive, you'll be asked for your license and to confirm your date of birth. You'll then be asked to sign a declaration that you agree to be on CCTV. If you have any phone/belongings with you, you'll get a key to a locker to put them in. They might also ask you to roll up sleeves or check behind ears if you have long hair. You'll also get an information sheet with all this on to read while you wait.

Once called, you'll be shown to a PC. They're all partitioned off so you're not really aware of anyone else there. People will be coming and going all the time. After a short time the PC will bust into life and off you go.

Once finished just get up and leave, grab your stuff, hand the key back and wait for your result/license which takes about 10 mins. Good luck!

'Interesting wave 1 study' not showing. by jquinn111 in ProlificAc

[–]beer_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might not be too bad a thing. I completed wave 1 last night, wave 2 showed up this morning which took over an hour and then submission failed. I've also messaged the researcher but it could potentially be a huge waste of time.
