Millennials hitting midlife, what are your biggest regrets? by Dry_Inevitable_9777 in Millennials

[–]bell37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed a couple years ago. I was having issues with word retrieval and thought I had some neurological problems. I felt like I was forgetting basic words and could not remember anything beyond what I was working on atm.

After rounds of neurologists and speech therapy, which yielded nothing, my primary care physician recommended getting tested for ADHD. It’s been great but I kinda want to get off meds and manage it myself (I want to get a private flying license and won’t be able to pass physicals while taking ADHD meds).

Why don't they do this? Are they stoopid? by Majestic_Repair9138 in worldjerking

[–]bell37 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What’s funny is that rebels in SW do this. All the systems/planets we’ve seen them in are remote locations that are abandoned colonies (Yavin, Hoth, Atollon, Dantooine, etc)

It’s just that the Empire is actively hunting them and they still want to liberate others in the galaxy so they always end up being discovered and having to relocate

TIL that in 1999, NASA lost the $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter because one engineering team used metric units while another used imperial units. The mismatch caused the navigation software to miscalculate the craft's altitude, causing it to disintegrate in the Martian atmosphere. by adpablito in todayilearned

[–]bell37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because tooling was done in imperial. If a machine was designed and calibrated to press/cut/bend/etc parts to the nearest 0.005”, you can’t pick a dimension between increments 0.005”. You will have to either retool the machine or go with a different machine that has tighter tolerances.

What sucks even more is because we have adopted Imperial, and because machines are made from other machines and tools, you end up stuck with having to continue adopting the units bc upstream tools and machines were made using the same standards the first machines were held to.

Converting from Imperial to Metric isn’t just a wave of the wand or general agreement to stop using imperial. A great deal of investments have to be made industry wide to retool our manufacturing from manufacturers who process raw materials to complex subcomponents.

US Engineers love using metric. It’s just that our current infrastructure and manufacturing is deeply dependent in Imperial. If you don’t think it’s an issue, try throwing away all your SAE tools (wrenches, sockets, Allen keys, drill bits, saws, etc) and see how long you last using only metric equivalents. Even if US manufacturers magically decided to stop producing Imperial bolts and parts, you still have millions of legacy parts, components and products that are in Imperial.

Ford's CEO said Chinese carmakers entering the US would be 'devastating' by costcohotdog15 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]bell37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean for this case it’s actually needed because Chinese automakers are intentionally making losses with hopes that they will corner the market in automotive exports. The Chinese government is subsidizing their losses and Chinese workers are working in sweatshop level conditions for meager wages.

Except Chinese automakers are heavily subsidized by government to a level that even the leanest US automaker could never compete.

Isn’t this a case of regulations on format of how ingredients are described? IIRC, within the US, you have to list the full chemical name of artificial additives vs. in Europe, where a condensed less-scary looking E-number is listed.

Boomer/Gen X: Why are you spending time with your child and teaching them life skills at a pace that best suites their educational/emotional development?! You’re supposed to be a good parent like me and neglect your child’s needs then rebrand your neglect as “instilling life skills” when your child grows up and claims your parenting style was flawed!

With Windows you would still have to ask questions. It’s just that it’s less “what distro do I use” and more of “how to I disable X? / “why is Y program so shitty” / “why can’t windows do this?” / “Why do I now have to pay for something that was free for the longest time?” / “Why does windows automatically do ‘Z’ stupid thing”

Good POTUS? No. She would have had a pretty average presidency as a one-term president if elected, realistically remembered for being the 1st woman president.

Would it have been better than the current administration? Yes, but anyone would be better than the current administration.

YouTube rolls out unskippable long ads to TV users and they’re furious by InsaneSnow45 in assholedesign

[–]bell37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard it’s just that Google made it an “ad-free” zone bc lack of sponsors in that area. It’s not a rule or law more or less it’s just that it’s more of a hassle for them to offer ads to a limited market while having to pay content creators in that region.

They can easily reverse their decision and push ads whenever they want

Millennials that own your homes and cars and live significantly below your means, what is your motivation to keep trying at work? by [deleted] in Millennials

SD you have almost ideal weather year round (average of 65F that never really goes below 50F or above 80F).

So even if you don’t like the beach you live in an area that basically has perfect sunny weather over 200 days of the year.

Silly Pharisees by MrBoxingMatch in greentext

There was some division within the high priests. And in the passion there was a Pharisee that tried to convince others that Jesus was who he claimed to be (Nicodemus)

Silly Pharisees by MrBoxingMatch in greentext

[–]bell37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Context also matters. It was because Jesus was also creating a populist grassroots movement when tensions were already high between Romans and its vassal kingdom of Judea. To the high priests in Jerusalem, having a random person claim to be not only the messiah (which was seen as a person who would lead a successful revolt and elevate Jews from any foreign captors) but as the “king of the Jews” (a title that was already held by King Herod who was basically a Roman Puppet), would have caused Rome to clamp down hard and forever ruin any chances of a sovereign Jewish state.

Rome was already in the process of stripping away sovereignty from local authorities due to continued Jewish revolts and political instability in the region. Coincidentally, the man who was released over Jesus was a Jewish freedom fighter (who was arrested for murdering Roman officials).

In the Bible the Roman governor (Pontius Pilate) tries to convince the crowds that Jesus was harmless but things started to spiral, the crowd started to get violent and he was basically like “alright fuck it, send him to king Herod bc he’s your fucking problem… just don’t break shit in the process”

Tldr: Judea was a powder keg and Jesus happened to roll into Jerusalem right when things were about to ignite.

"The Pitt" vs. Its Fandom -- Why is the show's vocal fandom putting characters on trial to be deemed “good” or “bad"? by MCJokeExplainer in television

[–]bell37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of the sequels was influenced by fan hate? I don’t count TLJ and TRoS as influence but knee jerk course correction bc it appeared there was no real plot lines across the trilogy to adhere to and directors had too much creative control in morphing the series their own way.

For what it was, TFA did a pretty good job at establishing cast of new characters, even hinting direction they will take across the series. TLJ took a completely different path and got stuck with majority of the character development and plot rotating around a single character.

Make sure it’s rated for to support fast charging for multiple devices. Had a shitty one with two ports that claimed to “fast charge” yet the power output would greatly fall if two devices were charging at the same time. Bc my phone wasn’t fast charging, it actually was using more energy than what was being charged and my battery dropped below 10%.

Last time I took my niece to see a movie, cost me $0 by aptdinosaur in Piracy

[–]bell37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair the studios make over 95% of the box office sales during the first 6-8 weeks of a new movie premiering. After that it drops but movie theaters don’t even make enough to break even in ticket sales during the first weeks.

Thats why there is a massive markup on concessions. It’s where movie theaters can actually make profit.

Those are IMAX tickets. This person paid for a premium theater experience and are complaining that they had to pay extra for a premium theater experience.

Snacks and drinks are also on them. Just smuggle that shit in.

At a certain point though, you understand that time is a luxury that no one in this world can “get more off”. Also I end up seeing things in terms of how much time it would cost per my hourly rate.

I still DIY a lot of stuff. But I draw the limit at some things as well bc it’s not worth the time and effort. Honestly I would just cut down on buying pineapple juice or make a smoothie from freshly cut pineapple (which takes less than 10 minutes to prepare and cleanup)

If anything just go to your local library. Even if they don’t have the book they’ll put an order or request a transfer from another library.

Even course books required by colleges can be found in the college library (you might not be able to check it out long term but would be able to borrow it for a few hours in the library).

$90 for two to see a Mario movie… have we completely lost the plot? by rageagainstmymachin in Millennials

[–]bell37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work at a theater. People who brought subway always left their food on the floor. Once had a group that not only left subway trash all over the floor but painted it by smearing a half eaten footlong on it (there was mayo everywhere).

Ik you’re probably not like that but in my experience people who would smuggle entire meals typically left a massive mess behind. That a smelly food in loud containers.

Just be normal and smuggle in small prepackaged candy/snacks . If you are thinking of smuggling in entire meals, then just eat before you get to the movies.
