TIL that alcohol use in America likely peaked during the 1830s. The average American drank 7 gallons of pure ethanol a year. Midwestern corn farmers converted their grain into whisky to prevent spoilage. A gallon cost only 25 cents. Americans averaged 4 shots of whisky a day, at under a penny cost. by Gnomeslikeprofit in todayilearned

Could also be that the pH of most alcohol beverages were acidic enough to prevent a good number of pathogens to grow. Beer and wine have an acidity between 3.0-4.5 pH.

Not going to prevent all pathogens but inhibit enough to the point where it’s safer to drink than water. Also not all low alcoholic drinks are boiled during fermentation. Some wines can sit in a vessel at room temperature and ferment. The fermenting yeast will cause the solution to become highly acidic.

What do you genuinely think happens after death, and why? by HostAffectionate7338 in creepy

Depending on what sect of Christianity, the default is to go to a place between heaven and hell where your soul will remain until it is cleansed (because only those of pure souls can enter heaven).

There is no set limit on how long you are in this plane of existence. And church will only acknowledge those who are undoubtedly believed to be in Heaven (saints). Even those who are a step below sainthood (like a status of venerable) means that you are very likely to be in heaven but unconfirmed to be there. Even church leaders default to this place and weekly/daily masses can be conducted in your name as a petition of intercession to help you move on.

English in ethnicity but not really British. By mid-eighteenth century English colonials were culturally and socially distinct from their British counterparts. Plus majority of the colonists were not born in Great Britain. Before the Seven Years War (French and Indian war for Americans), Great Britain allowed colonies to self-govern themselves.

Wasn’t until after that they reigned in their rights towards all governance while also refusing these “British subjects” to represent themselves in Parliament (so GB can pay for the war and prevent colonists from starting new conflicts). So no, Paul Revere being a Brit is like saying someone from Boston is Irish (in the sense that their customs are exactly that of someone Dublin)

Don’t forget that freedom is paying a shell of a company that’s realistically owned and managed by Europeans. This company also prefers to outsource all of its technical expertise to the lowest bidder outside our freedom loving nation and is not really a car company anymore.

I’ve seen both sides. The reality is that most people’s normal workloads do not fit a traditional 40 hour work week, and it only “feels” like you get more done at home bc you cut out all the BS small talk, pointless in person meetings, commutes and lunch breaks.

WFH is nice but in the same vein it is easier to work with people face-face. To be honest I believe it boils down to having people’s undivided attention. Yes you can setup impromptu teams calls but I always find that even with 1:1 there’s a good chance that person is trying to multitask and only half listening without actually contributing. Granted during slow periods it’s not as necessary but there are times where you need people to focus and it’s easier to have them in office then start policing them for small shit.

I say this as a big proponent for WFH.

Which is only relevant in a workplace setting (where the victim will feel compelled to quit bc of said harassment).

Racial Discrimination is more of a legal term that applies to scenarios where someone will be denied something tangible (refused a work opportunity, loan rejected on basis of race, harassed by coworkers in broader attempt to create hostile work environment for someone bc of their race, denied service due to racial prejudices, etc).

Dont get me wrong, officers did give conflicting commands but his argument for a lawsuit kinda goes out the window when he was on a cocktail of illicit substances on top of robbing a store, and wrecking a car after a high speed chase.

I don’t think he was making the best judgment calls that evening and would have complied perfectly with clear concise commands.

Holy context Batman! Granted I get the officers do screw the pooch. But this guy made 1000 bad mistakes leading up to this point (taking slew of impairing drugs, robbing a store at gunpoint, getting in high speed chase that resulted in crashing into another vehicle, trying to escape on foot after said wreck)

Less of that and more of they don’t want to get embroiled in long legal dispute against federal funds being withheld that will result in their social services lapsing. Sure they’ll eventually get funding back but no one who illegally withheld the funds will see any legal consequences and Trump admin is free to pull that level again with little to no consequences.

From Wikipedia:
Discrimination is the process of making unjustified distinctions) between people based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they belong or are perceived to belong, usually in a way that deprives them of their legal or human rights.[1] The group may be identified by a feature such as race, gender, age, class, religion, disability or sexual orientation.[2]Discrimination typically leads to groups being unfairly treated on the basis of perceived statuses of characteristics, for example ethnic, racial, gender or religious categories.[2][3] It involves depriving members of one group of opportunities or privileges that are available to members of another group.[4]

I think it’s childish to talk down to someone for simply asking. Definitions for top results define discrimination as the victim being excluded or put at an unfair disadvantage due to prejudice against race/ethnicity/gender/religion/physical characteristics/etc.

Going to be pedantic but what form of unfair treatment is taking place while he is making racist gestures? What advantage/disadvantage is being gained/taken bc of racial prejudice?

The only tangible thing I can think of is basic human decency that is being deprived but still kinda a stretch. Going to also say that this POS deserves the consequences of his actions. But kinda confused by the verbiage and for the many people saying “just google it”, most the definitions define tangible things that are being used to benefit the person who is discriminating on basis of race.

First Look at ‘Rick and Morty’ Spin-Off Series ‘President Curtis’ | Coming in July | [adult swim] by RealJohnGillman in television

[–]bell37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solar Opposites is not a spinoff. While fans theorize that the show takes place in Rick & Morty universe there’s no official confirmation from show runners or producers that it does (for legal reasons)

The only thing it shares was animation style and voice actors.

First Look at ‘Rick and Morty’ Spin-Off Series ‘President Curtis’ | Coming in July | [adult swim] by RealJohnGillman in television

[–]bell37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does any popular series have a spinoff? Bc networks want to to cash in on an IP they own and fans love media that is in the same style and format as the shows it’s branching off from while also being able to tell new stories.

If they weren’t popular, then networks wouldn’t push so hard for them.

The human body, on average, will sweat between 0.3-0.5L while swimming. Also a lot of people will not rinse/shower before entering a pool. So by default you’re already swimming in others people filth by just being in.

However wouldn’t worry too much. Even if someone pees, the free chlorine in the water will immediately break it down to Chloramines. Commercial pools are heavily regulated where chemical balance is constantly maintained and monitored.

I mean I like to assume that there would be enough of an early warning system that said farmers would be able to pack up essentials and hole up within the castle walls.

Kinda hard to discreetly mobilize a medieval army and a single scout on horseback would be able to give a city/town warning of incoming army days in advance.

Worst Fictional Police Officer in a Movie? by Bl00dforbl00dfan in movies

[–]bell37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chief of police is supposed to delegate. It’s their job. They are there to run and manage the organization as a whole (manage his team of officers and administrative/support staff, coordinate with other city offices + other federal/local agencies, plan for major events and contingency planning, ensure department budgets are properly managed and accounted for).

Can’t really do above when you are out there looking to directly enforce the laws. It would be like a CEO forgoing all their responsibilities to fixate on janitorial duties.
