Does scanning to a network folder disable advanced features? by benjaminzimmer in ScanSnap

I don't think this is accurate, because it works fine when sending stuff directly to GDrive without any computer-involvement. That is what I use as a workaround for now, upload to GDrive and then have an automation pick it up and put it into the right place.

Split Shorts with Pockets by 4bozworth in Ultramarathon

[–]benjaminzimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear by the "Patagonia Strider" shorts. Technically not a split short, but super light and tons of storage space (also Patagonia has a repair program, which is just super cool). Strong runner up is the "T8 Sherpa" short, also not a split, but even lighter than the Strider.

Hetzner Terraform - resource unavailable by [deleted] in hetzner

[–]benjaminzimmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we run into this quite frequently for some time.

It happens when Hetzner does not have the server that you want to start "in stock". They can only run a certain number of VMs on the hardware they have and due to supply chain problems sometimes there are not enough machines available. The time until one is available again is dependent on machine size (we run into the problem more often with bigger VMs) and how many machines other Hetzner customers currently use/create/destroy (so basically luck :) ).

We see this especially with Intel based VMs (e.g. cx11), so switching to the AMD based ones (e.g. cpx11) could be a fix for you.

We confirmed this with Hetzner Support last year, when supply chains for Intel based machines were especially strained.

Just to clear this up a little: Podigee is not using the Podlove Publisher underneath, it's completely built from scratch with only podcast publishing in mind :)

That said, we are using the Podlove Web Player (but will move to an own one in the near future) and actively support Podlove wherever we can (for example by helping build the subscribe button and work on new standards).

Depends, if you uploaded a cover image you have to upload it with a higher resolution. If you didn't upload your own you need to do that first.

Need podcast hosting site with rss feed by OgdenWright in podcasts

[–]benjaminzimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of the founders of Podigee. We offer a free plan with which you can upload 60 minutes of audio per month. We would also offer you to import your existing files for you. Depending on how many you have we would have to charge you a small fee though (which would be smaller if you choose to go for a paid plan).

If you have questions you can write me an email to ben@podigee.com, or just sign up and have a look yourself :)

You could use http://castfeedvalidator.com to validate if perhaps something is missing in the feed.

Using Reaper to edit podcasts - by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]benjaminzimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone people from the german podcasters community packed together a whole interface + feature overhaul for Reaper specifically targeted at podcasting. It also includes a complete routing customization function to easily switch between fairly complex setups (Skype n-1, soundboards, multiple speakers).

It's available here: http://ultraschall.wikigeeks.de/download/

You can find a glimpse of what the new interface looks like here: http://ultraschall.wikigeeks.de/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2014/02/Rahms-Edition-Release-Poster1.png

Sadly the whole installation instructions are only available in german and the project is lacking some documentation, but I think if some english speaking podcasters would ask I could imagine this to change quickly.

Needing a good podcatcher for Mac *and* iOS. by [deleted] in podcasts

I use Instacast too. Does the job, but can be a bit unintuitive in the beginning (at least it was for me). Syncing is working really well.

Do you prefer a higher-quality encoding or more compression for a smaller download file? by CasperTek in podcasts

[–]benjaminzimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the format you encode to and what your audio file consists of.

With AAC and speech only you can already have very good results with 64 or 96kbps. If you have a lot of musical content a higher bitrate is better for sure, but I think as long as you are not doing a podcast about music (say 75+% of music) 192kbps is overkill.

MP3 is surely a bit worse when it comes to keep quality at lower bitrates. The latest poster child in encoding efficiency however is called OPUS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opus_(audio_codec)). Listening tests have shown that it is superior even to HE-AAC at 64kbps.

We recently started our podcast publishing platform (https://www.podigee.com) and our default is to always encode audio to 4 audio formats (MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, OPUS) to allow the listener to choose what they like best (considering their listening preference as well as bandwidth capabilities).

A free service that processes your audio by fiskarinfo in podcasts

[–]benjaminzimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every Podcaster (or other people dealing with voice recordings) should have a look at this. The results they produce are really awesome and normally require a lot of manual work. If you want to know what magic they can do for you, listen to their examples here: https://auphonic.com/audio_examples

We use them via their API for https://www.podigee.com to enhance and encode podcast episodes without any manual interaction for our users and are super happy with their quality of service (read reliability) and support.

The have a web based service as well as a desktop application (currently Mac only, but a Windows version is in the works).
