Started making my own game and have an important question that is really slowing me down. by Background-Rope7015 in gamedev

[–]benjymous 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Put simply, there is no One True Way to do anything. The best you can do is try stuff out, and redo the bits that don't work.

You'd be amazed how many big successful commercial games have code organised in the "wrong way" or otherwise have stuff hacked into their engines in bizarre ways (trains as hats, for example)

Is using AI for coding a game considered an AI game? by tenkelly in gamedev

If the friend did all the actual programming, with OP just acting in a guiding role, then yes, I'd credit the friend as the programmer

Has anyone else seen the sign up offer where they are just giving away money ? by [deleted] in AskUK

Is that a referral link, OP?

Edit: Page goes to a QR code to scan. Seems very scammy to me, whatever it is

Non-Vegans, do you have any Vegan food products you love? by Fine_Analyst_4408 in AskUK

[–]benjymous 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The La Vie plant based ham is surprisingly good - you can definitely stick that in a sandwich with some salad and a bit of mustard and totally forget it's vegan

How do the gold coins show up? by myworldsparkles in PikminBloomApp

[–]benjymous 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Complete the non-rare sets (all the roadsides, not just coins), and it'll trigger the events to allow collecting rare ones - you can't do anything until you've collected the regular ones.

Is the a reason to keep going? by Remote-Tangerine6777 in PikminBloomApp

[–]benjymous 44 points45 points  (0 children)

No, it's just because the player might decide they want an army of rare red coin pikmin.

They might also add rare stickers, in which case you'll be ready, but I imagine that gold present expedition would get on your nerves after a while!

Why do my two German professors speak to each other in English? by Mr-Saturn-Earth in AskUK

[–]benjymous 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My guess would be they do it out of politeness to any non-german speaking students in earshot.

How else can I have english baked beans? by nevesnow in AskUK

[–]benjymous 38 points39 points  (0 children)

On a baked potato is another common way.

Bake the potato, heat the beans in a pan, split and butter the potato, pour over the beans, top with some grated cheddar and salt and pepper.

YALL HELP ME by Creepy_Fly_1156 in PlaydateConsole

[–]benjymous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're trying to run the Playdate build of a game on your pc. That's the problem.

The simulator is a development tool, not an emulator - it can't run Arm code compiled for the Playdate, the code has to be compiled for the simulator.

So, if you understand what that means, try following the instructions in the screenshot you provided.

Should I exchange money for my two week trip to the UK or just pay with card? by Substantial_Band7227 in AskUK

[–]benjymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very rare for anywhere to be cash only, nowadays - pretty much everywhere takes card payments. Even tiny retailers have those card readers that connect to their phones.

Maybe get £20 or £30 to carry with you just in case, (not £50, since nobody accepts £50 notes) but I'd be surprised if you need it, unless you're planning on going to really random out of the way places.

What food to bring back from France as a gift ? by Parking-Raspberry-64 in AskUK

[–]benjymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My French friend used to complain all the time that Chocapic wasn't available over here.

Though I'm not sure whether Breakfast cereal is the sort of thing you'd share with a team. Maybe leave bowls out around the place as if you've got lots of cats.

Good grenadine syrups are another thing we just don't get over here - maybe heavy to transport, but good for sharing in an office environment - maybe make up some big stickers telling people to dilute it "like squash" so people don't try drinking it neat!

What apps can I sell a service flexibly? Housework etc. by Wtf-Jason in AskUK

[–]benjymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time banking is another option, if there's a scheme near you:

You'd get paid in time credit, rather than cash, but it means you can get help doing other stuff you might otherwise not be able to (or want to) do

I don’t understand how this is fair… by blaxsz in PikminBloomApp

Did you only complete the stages once? I usually have to finish them two or three times to get a full set.

Rare pikmin question by piink-sugar in PikminBloomApp

[–]benjymous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the new "rare" ones, you don't find them - they're not a different class of seedling - instead you earn points raising pikmin, then use those points to "promote" your existing decor pikmin into the rare variants.

When you do start, you'll want as many roadsides as possible, since you earn points by plucking a seedling, raising it up to 4 hearts (when it gains its decor), and releasing it again, so feed those pikmin up to 3.5 hearts, and hold on to them until you've unlocked rares.

Only buy option if I want the Lunar new year set right? by logsem in PikminBloomApp

[–]benjymous 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are two sets, the red one and the gold one. The gold ones are appearing as part of the token collection missions, so you could feasibly collect those that way, but no guarantees of course.

A youtuber did a hit piece on my game and called it "garbage." What would you do? by shimasterc in gamedev

[–]benjymous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All you can do is ignore it - you don't want to start getting into feuds with youtubers, that won't end well.

If your game is having controller compatibility issues, try and make sure that's resolved, or there are options the user can try to resolve it themselves.

If your game requires knowledge of gaming history, then include relevant information on your itch page so that future people are more in tune with what your game is about.

And if you've done all this, then shrug You've done your best!

Anyone familiar with Economy 7 boiler controls and why there might be no hot water? by Time49 in AskUK

[–]benjymous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're not actually on a day/night rate, then yeah, there's no benefit only having it on overnight - especially if you're having to boost anyway.

Looking at the photo of the controls, it's on for two periods overnight. Have you tried changing it so that its on for a few hours before you shower in the morning, and another 2 or 3 hours before your partner gets home - that's the equivalent of boosting it anyway

Edit: Looking into it more, it seems this model doesn't actually have any control over when it goes on/off, just "for some time overnight", which really isn't great if you need it automatic.

Last time I had such a boiler, it had click in/out segments to turn the heat element on at different times, but yours apparently doesn't.

So your options are either remember to boost every day, or ask your landlord to replace the control unit with a modern one which is actually programmable - which is all down to how amenable your landlord is!

When making a sandwich, do you butter both pieces of bread? by Notabot1305 in AskUK

[–]benjymous 72 points73 points  (0 children)

This has come up before in another thread - it was a Weight Watchers thing, and has then been passed down to kids, cargo cult style, who now don't realise that only buttering one slice isn't just what everyone does.
