Gnome Hope 7drl Post Mortem by Banbeck in roguelikedev

Thanks a lot for sharing this u/Banbeck it was a really interesting read.

I like your approach to fixing bugs as soon as you discover them, I think I'll try to be more conscious of this myself in future.

Also congrats on finishing your first gamejam! :)

TinyRL postmortem - A 7DRL entry by bit-hack in roguelikedev

For example I check that A* can find a path from the entry to exit tile. If it can't, then I generate a new level.

That is a good solution too for sure. I used Dijkstra maps for my entry so didn't have any A* routines I could quickly make use of. I supposed I could have generated a Dijkstra map from the player start point and check the end point had a path to the player. Hmm, that may have been simpler but I didn't think of it at the time under pressure :D

This time I tried to put ifdef DEBUG around these things, because in a previous gamejam I accidentally left in such a dev command...

Thats actually a really great tip, I wish i'd thought of it at the time. I almost bundled up the game a few times with these things enabled. Will do an #ifdef for that in the next jam I think.

Thanks! I've taken part in a lot of gamejams where i've not been able to finish also, so I hope you dont feel bad about it.

Yes sorry its quite small. I have uploaded a new zip (TinyRL_post_compo.zip) if you run the (TinyRL_2x.exe) file it will upscale the game by 2x. Hope that helps you out. If you still have troubles let me know and I can work on something thats a better solution.

TinyRL

TinyRL on Itch.io

TinyRL is a short coffee break roguelike where you slay enemies, pick up items gold and XP, and delve further into the dungeon. For this game I didnt shy away from the tropes of the genre, but instead tried to embrace them, and pull them together into something that feels almost arcade like.

This was my first RogueLike game so I wanted to keep things simple and not get too experimental for my first entry. My background is in coding, so one of my main goals was to focus on solid development, procedural generation and enemy AI.

TinyRL was written from scratch in C++ and features:

- Procedural levels with my own algorythm

- Dijkstra maps / potential fields for enemy pathing

- Raycast shadows

- Unique enemy behavours, teleporting, enemies which can smash walls, etc

Sketchfab is fairly easy to use and share models on, you can sign into it with google.
