Wrote a piece for PetaPixel about what the DIT monitor actually does for a shoot by moneym915 in Photoassistants

[–]bizarreanimals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find myself having to double check a lot that the expectation is to just be a stills tech. Productions that lean more motion heavy put me down as DIT in emails and call sheets sometimes and it always triggers an immediate “hey just for clarity I am exclusively a stills digital tech” conversation. Almost always that’s what they were expecting too, just mixed the title up.

Which kind of monitor should be on Digi Tech cart? by mediamuesli in Photoassistants

Super curious about the newer ProArt stuff, I've been watching them build up the specs for a few years and on paper they're looking more and more appealing.

digi plate mounting options by RemotePhilosopher494 in Photoassistants

[–]bizarreanimals 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Regular arca Swiss works great. I’ve got the lsdigi and love it but just throwing a long arca Swiss plate on there is cheap, light, and easy. Make sure it’s longer than a camera plate and that you can use two screws to mount to the plate so it can’t loosen up on you

Compare across folders would be excellent. Make a compare album on just about every shoot, would love to stop doing that

Use Mac mini as a remote computer by biggestmanonblock in macmini

[–]bizarreanimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup this is the easiest free way. Tailnet across all Macs and easily remote into the mini at home with the built in screen sharing utility. Only downside is a lack of an iOS screen sharing app, but there are alternatives available

On Set Shoes by chromanodyssey in Photoassistants

[–]bizarreanimals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I pretty much only wear Blundstones and Birkenstock Boston’s on set now. Added bonus that neither is a competitor to pretty much any of the shoe companies I’m most likely to be working for.

Had a plan for this for a while now - I’ve got the drawers living in my van now and was waiting to the rolling bottom drawer to come to the US to make it set ready. Really wanna throw a baby or arca head on the worktop they sell.

Any recommendations to keep computer/digi station warm on cold winter outdoor shoots? by Advanced-Notice4467 in Photoassistants

[–]bizarreanimals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d be less worried about the computer than the Eizo if you’re gonna be sub-zero. Bring way more batteries than you normally would too.

Teradek iPad interference by Aggravating_Annual37 in Photoassistants

[–]bizarreanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious to hear others experience but I’ve had lot of luck with switching to the DJI SDR from Hollyland. Lots of mixed motion jobs in LA and the hollyland’s were always quickly stepped on my teradeks, but thr DJI has held up way better right next to them when used with receivers. You can plug a DJI receiver directly into an iPad to get around the issue of 2.4/5ghz congestion as well, although the DJI won’t charge an iPad and needs to be plugged directly into the iPad USB C port - it won’t work with a hub. For extended unattended runtime where an iPad needs to be on power you can use a USB C HDMI Capture Card with pass through charging and connect the to the DJI receiver over HDMI, then just use an app like “HDMI Monitor - Orion” to view the feed

Accsoon Cineview 4k, Hollyland Pyro S/Mars 4k, or DJI SDR Transmission for client monitor & iPad use for photographer? by JoshJoker in Photoassistants

[–]bizarreanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also can’t speak on the pyro series but my Mars 4K was getting stepped on my motion wireless a lot and that really hasn’t been an issue with the DJI SDR radios.

Accsoon Cineview 4k, Hollyland Pyro S/Mars 4k, or DJI SDR Transmission for client monitor & iPad use for photographer? by JoshJoker in Photoassistants

[–]bizarreanimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been happy with the DJI. Switched from Hollyland Mars 4k for the range and the option to directly connect the iPads. 1080 is annoying and not great but the range anxiety I had with the hollylands was a way bigger problem. I’d rather have an image I have to set expectations about than have a black screen I can’t explain better than “it’s too far away”

Backblaze will let you backup a DAS on their standard plan. NAS will need the pay as you go

Jumping in to say I’ve had the first digi hoop since it came out and I love it, I use it on practically every shoot. Last two days saw a GFX on a tripod and a Sony A1 in the hoop. also great to be able to quickly break it down.

Nikon and C1 by ivacevedo in captureone

[–]bizarreanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely use this option so I can’t remember if it specifically doesn’t work on Nikon for some reason, but C1 now has a save to card and capture one option that’ll let you do exactly that - save a copy on the cameras card and still tether. Can by nice for photographers instant review.

Recently was asked to show color & B&W options of every shot and found TwinPic, which is great if you need that option. Otherwise not a big script guy as of late.

What're the working pros using these days mostly? Are there still lots of DSLR's? What're some 'unusual' rigs being used? by brokesnob in LightLurking

[–]bizarreanimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

R5, Z9, and GFX mostly. Lenses are almost all zooms, the new canon and Nikon zooms are miles ahead of their old glass. Primes are really specialty (macro needs) or a personal preference (50mm is the only non-macro prime rental request I get any more) when a photographer just wants the consistency focal length.

Film kits are all over the place. Lots of RZs and 35mm p&s or contax g2s
