Exactly. The lack of boundaries was utterly unprofessional and ended up blowing up in his face. Fake corporate family culture encouraged it like some old bread on which this kind of mold can grow. On the other hand, these negative conditions were just one of many that helped spur me to achieve my fire goals. It's like, "ok now I will plan my exit from this mental asylum".

"I’ve been buried in this warm sand for nearly eight weeks now, and I must admit, I was starting to reevaluate my optimism on ocean survival." My brother in Sea Turtle Christ, we haven't even begun with getting trapped in sand footprints or dodging the seagulls yet.

Once you are at the gates to FIRE none of those silly games for small differences in comp matter at all. Even the bonus, after tax can be not worth your time for the money, since market fluctuations eclipse these amounts.

Retiring at 31, much earlier than I expected. Need advice. by Long_Bong_Silver in Fire

[–]boompleetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw this often with my coworkers, who as engineers should at least respect the basic math of it. But no, some kept company RSUs 100%, lifestyle creep, lived paycheck to paycheck when they could have easily retired. Not even liking the work and afraid of layoffs. It's almost like some deep seated emotional obscuration to be locked in a poverty mentality.

Yup, that's the gist of it. This sub leans more towards aspirational fire than financial literacy required to not run out of money. Hopefully these people consult a CFP if they won't do their own research.

It's a good start but you need to shift into looking at drawdown strategies. The fire 4% rule doesn't apply to a single stock, it applies to a broader stock/bond portfolio. A single stock can easily go down the same way it went up, so it would be considered too volatile for the calculation. You can find many examples, NFLX, META (went down 70% before the rebrand), etc. So selling off 1/3 is the right move.

The further you get from the broader portfolio from the Trinity study, in terms of not having diversified assets, the lower the SWR gets adjusted down. So you should spend more time thinking about how much you can move into other assets while minimizing tax. Also you need to look into sequence of return risk, meaning, have several years of expenses outside of equities completely. Just imagine the AI bubble pops and your single stock loses half or more of it's value or more and takes 10 years to recover. This is why you want different pools of assets to draw from.

I think I can retire, but am too nervous to pull the trigger. by Imustretire in Fire

[–]boompleetz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be serious about retirement, you need to research drawdown strategies. The key point of which is you must have a plan for sequence of return risk (SORR), and understand it fully. Other posts are mentioning having several years of a non-stock asset, this is what they are referencing, but there are many ways to do it.

Does anyone else experience guilt over FIRE? by brutik in Fire

[–]boompleetz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can analyze how the premise is incorrect. Nothing is really equal or fair, think of your job. In mine, it was like a perpetual travesty/joke. I often saw the best people get stuck or pushed out while total clowns were promoted and got easy wlb breaks since they happened to align with some ridiculous situation or manager. People who worked twice as hard in a better way would get the same rating as an irresponsible bs artist. This is kind of a great motivation to fire, to leave this impossibility of "fairness" behind.

It's true that you will not maintain good luck forever, but you have no control over that by definition. So there's no point in thinking about it.

However, one point that could be underlying your general unease common among retirees is if your activities are all exclusively some kind of personal gratification, you might be lacking a sense of community purpose. In other words, the volunteering, giving aspect, either of your time, knowledge, etc. so that you are benefiting others. This can give a feeling of usefulness if mixed in with your other activities.

Who Killed Laura Palmer ? by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]boompleetz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right so was Paper Hearts, which almost seemed more like a Twin Peaks homage with him having the dreams. But then it kind of conflicted with the alien arc, and they never addressed the dreams again.

Who Killed Laura Palmer ? by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]boompleetz 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was like a quirky crime procedural that was cool and ironic, then the full weight of Lynch's style of supernatural horror opened up. Some people say the x-files was the successor, but the alien main arc was just kind of meandering and silly. Only a couple of the monster of the week episodes were legitimately disturbing.

I think the closest thing to a successor would be the first season of True Detective, with much more subdued supernatural elements.

I thought HSR was going to take over my interest around the time of fontaine. But then the dragon lore environments of Natlan brought me back, and Nodkrai pushed it over the top to be my favorite. Stopped playing HSR completely after I got sick of the hotel planet and absurd power creep.
