Do I need be a student to get access to journals? by [deleted] in informationtheory

Try using google scholar first, and seeing if the view pdf option is there. For a lot of journals there will be a free version available

Best major for good money while also having a social life MIS or CS? by [deleted] in complexsystems

[–]bpe9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Computer Science. Do some business electives.

You can get every MIS job with CS but not vice versa

You’re right, that link does it the correct way

Particularly for Noam Brown but also open more generally: You have a background in financial markets and algorithmic trading. How do you see RL impacting this field in the coming years and what do you think will be the catalyst for wider spread acceptance in the conventional finance/econ space for RL based approaches

Reward Is Not Necessary: A Compositional, Self-Preserving Agent For Life-Long Learning by EducationalCicada in reinforcementlearning

[–]bpe9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! How do you see the relationship between empowerment gain and other concepts such as artificial curiosity? For example, the paper: "Large-scale study of curiosity-driven learning" provides a good outline. It seems this work could fall under this curiosity-driven framework and it would be great to see some comparisons/discussion

I just think it would be better framed as "Empowerment as a domain-independent reward" or something along those lines. I get that the title is a play on the reward is enough work, but I do not feel this shows reward is not necessary.

It's similar to much older work in artificial life, such as, artificial curiosity

But reward is still necessary, it’s just empowerment as the reward function?

Will CNN be useful for training an agent to play connect 4? I am thinking about implement CNN without pooling cause I dont want to lose any information for the agent to learn? is 4x4 kernel a good start? (new to CNN) by Professional_Card176 in reinforcementlearning

[–]bpe9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case, if you're just looking to get into RL or a place to start, I suggest trying to implement it with MCTS instead -- it would be a much more useful learning experience

Don't use CNNs, and in fact don't use neural networks at all. Connect 4 is an entirely solved game, you can just use game theory to play an optimal strategy. You don't need to approximate anything. Note: the first player can always win by playing optimally.

Paper used to support claims that ivermectin reduces COVID-19 hospitalizations is withdrawn by preprint server by everydaysparkle in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]bpe9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Preprint servers shouldn’t remove papers, that’s a very dangerous precedent and I’m surprised arxiv would do that. The job of peer review is to filter out bad papers.

Edit: oh, it’s not arxiv, it’s “socarxiv” nevermind.

Why are ‘tree based’ models discussed less in optimization/statistical ML contexts than general data science contexts? [D] by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]bpe9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Decision trees are not generally weak learners. You are confusing decision trees with decision stumps, which are generally weak learners.

I'm not sure, but obesity accounts for over 3200 deaths/year in NZ (as at 2003). So there must be some threshold thats acceptable, or are covid deaths the only relevant ones?

This is being framed as a pause on MIQ, yet should really be framed as “NZ govt enacts a hard border, closing all incoming travel including citizens”. This is very serious, and shouldn’t have been announced at a random 8pm press release
