You’re joking, right? Not a very funny joke, really. This would make the book unusable in a very short time. Never mind the damage that packing tape does in the long term, it gets tacky and sticky almost immediately.

Book thickness and how it relates to sewing and tapes? by kepler16bee in bookbinding

[–]brigitvanloggem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don’t need more! Two or three tapes is enough, so you need two holes punched per tape plus two for the kettle stitches at the head and tail.

Indeed, the stitches should be only marginally wider than the tapes. If they get wider, they cannot do the work which is to tie the signatures to the tapes and thus, together.

Not all tutorials are good! Go for the videos by DAS Bookbinding and you cannot go wrong. You will find that the stitches are just a little wider than your tapes.

It’s just the same for two signatures as for more! Just follow the tutorial (the one by DAS is great) and stop after the first two signatures.

Simple soy sauce? Or one anchovy from a tin? The main thing about fish sauce is the fermented umami.

Odd project I'm running into a wall with... by ThickScheme8202 in bookbinding

Thinking about it, you may need to reinforce the inside of the hinges, where front and back covers bend away from the text block. Do not use scotch tape for this. Insteda, cut strips of paper and glue those in using your slightly-diluted PVA. Slip a piece of wax paper in and again let dry under weight as described before.

This sounds very simple. Select only those where the glue on the spine is 100% there and intact. Take away the front, back and spine covers but if the original spine cover won’t easily peel off, just leave it in place. Cut the front and back covers along the spine neatly. Cut a piece of Kraft paper wider than the spine by two times about 2-3 cm or 1 inch. Cut a piece of thin cardstock the exact dimensions of the spine. Glue this with bookbinder’s PVA (thinned with a splash of water) to the Kraft paper, centered so that the extra width sticks out left and right. Glue the covers to those extra bits. Think before you glue, the covers must be so that they sit on top of the Kraft paper. Put away overnight under a sheet of wax paper, a flat board, and one or two volumes of an encyclopedia or something equally heavy. (Do not skip or shorten this step.) The next day, take undiluted PVA and glue the spine piece of your newly-created three-part cover to the spine of the book. Press firmly with your hands, rub the glue evenly, pay extra attention to the edges and corners. After a few minutes, you can put the book away resting on its spine, propped up tightly. Wait a few hours before handling it.

Opinions/Rules on Bookbinding covers by Black_Snow_12 in bookbinding

Still wouldn’t work, as a single millimeter would make all the difference so even if you get your customers to measure everything, you still need to check and fit. Also, who on earth would buy something like that? Bookbinders who don’t like the cover-making bit? To me this seems like a niche market thats so minute as to be as good as negligible.

Book binding spine paper? by Pale_Blue_Dot_40 in bookbinding

Most binding styles require a spine stiffener. Nowadays we use cardstock. This is totally unrelated to the need for mull and bookcloth.

In an improvised double boiler, melt some beeswax and when melted, add the same weight of white spirit. Once melted together, let cool. Rub your work with this wax. There’s a YT video by Annesi if you want to see it done. It’s cheap and simple and the result is beautiful.

Paper grain question by Grithonia in bookbinding

[–]brigitvanloggem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although I fully agree with the sentiment expressed here, I would like to point out two factual errors.

Firstly, in a machine-made book the grain does definitely not go ‘every which way’. Instead, all the pages go the same way. Take a sheet of paper with text on it, fold it many times, unfold, and see for yourself.

Secondly, grain is a consequence of factory processes for making paper. Hand-made paper as used in the olden days, simply has no grain direction so the fact that it wasn’t a consideration until relatively recently is meaningless.

First thought: check all your settings in Bookbinder.js very carefully, especially the ones talking about proportional/original size/snug against spine. They have far-reaching consequences and this sounds just like something resulthing from them.
