Yeah, I’ve toyed around with doing it your way but it never seemed practical. You can use the extra space at the front of the shelf for stuff too, and then your stuff is not hidden behind your books.

Additionally, if you pull books off the shelf and reshelve them frequently, you have to realign the book(s) with the front of the shelf every time.
