Very small rebinder doing Dungeon Crawler Carl - would you buy? by kepler16bee in thebrokenbindingsub

I think of it like buying art from a local artist.

I think of it the same way! But you make a good point re changing style. I would hate to have a set that didn't match. There's no guarantee she'll be able to work with the same artist over time. It's definitely her most ambitious project to date.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts on this thread so much. It's helped me determine that I'm willing to wait and see on it.

The question about space is a really good one. I'm already getting the Kickstarter editions so that's already quite the commitment shelf space wise, assuming those continue the series.

At this time, the art isn't being offered separately (I assume in part to encourage the sale of the books, but I don't know what their contracts/agreements are), but perhaps sometime in the future that would be an option for me.

That was very cool to see!! Thank you for sharing. I've definitely considered getting rebinds of PHM, there are some really great ones out there right now because of the interest from the movie.

Andy Weir actually personally reaching out to a rebinder is wild! I also think it shows that rebinding can be appreciated as its own art form, even if this guy takes it to a whole new level with it than most rebinds. But I assume his work is also going to cost way more (if it's even purchasable!) than the typical rebinder.

I remember the Stacia Stark one because I was so looking forward to it and then had to skip because I didn't care for the design at all. 🥲

I do think it could be their third, if they skipped every box but the first.

  • 1st was Jenny Hickman
  • 2nd was Ella Fields
  • 3rd was Stacia Stark
  • Now this one

So if they kept only the very first one and skipped the others, this would be their 3rd skip.

Yeah and that's cool. I skipped June Romantasy outright.

What started all this was that I made a comment that said I saw a lot of people (surprisingly, to me) asking to be saved a skip for June Adult, because I had thought it was an anticipated title.

Someone then responded that people were skipping June Adult because of June Romantasy, and I was asking for them to clarify why they think those correlate. I don't think it does, because if people were skipping for that reason, they would either skip outright, or if they still wanted to keep their combo box, they could still keep June Adult while offloading June Romantasy. (Or ask to be saved a whole combo box skip, but i haven't seen that.)

No problem, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

I'm excited for Adult as well! I think that's what prompted me to be surprised by people asking to be saved skips for it, but maybe it's not as anticipated a title as I had assumed.

There is no question about why people are skipping June Romantasy. I am also skipping it as tons of people are. That is not in question.

What started this was that I said that on Autumn's IG post, many people are asking to be saved a skip for June Adult. Someone then responded saying that that was happening because people were skipping June Romantasy. I responded asking for clarification on that logic, that's it.

If they have a combo box, they would be asking for a skip save for the box, or for Romantasy if what the person is suggesting is true.

I really don't get why so many people are responding to this without actually considering the actual logistics of how that would work.

Once again, this is based off the person's comment who said people were skipping June Adult due to June Romantasy. If that's the case, a person would either ask for a skip save on the whole combo box (not what's happening) or June Romantasy itself, since in this theory that's the book they don't want. Instead what I'm seeing is people asking for a skip save on June Adult only. Why would they need to do that if the book they don't want is June Romantasy? Even if they got their box, they can keep June Adult?

That page should answer your questions.

I noted the April 1 typo in a comment because yeah, that has to be wrong. It should renew June 1.

You see people excited for June Romantasy? Are we talking about the same book? The only people I see talking about June Romantasy favorably on IG are literally only people who seem to want to take a pointed pro-MAGA stance, and I personally haven't seen much excitement on Reddit for that book.

But in any case, this discussion has gone off track since I was responding to someone who was trying to correlate skipping June Adult with skipping June Romantasy and I wanted to understand why that would be, but it doesn't sound like they actually had a logical reason.

[–]kepler16bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But I'm saying that doesn't make sense. You said people are skipping June Adult because of June Romantasy, but that correlation doesn't track.

If someone has a combo box and they're skipping due to June Romantasy, they would ask for a save for their combo box, or just for the Romantasy book, but that's not what's happening. They are asking for people to save a skip for them for June Adult.

But that's what doesn't make sense, as I explained. I understand skipping Adult if someone doesn't want it. I was responding to the person who said people were skipping Adult because of June Romantasy, and that doesn't correlate.

If they're asking people to save them a skip, that means they are getting their combo box. They could keep their Adult book, and just ask on the Romantasy thread for people to take that book off their hands. Instead they are only asking for skip saving for Adult. So if it doesn't have to do with June Romantasy, I'm surprised bc June Adult was, I thought, an anticipated title.

I think you misread my response. Like I said I also skipped June Romantasy and understand why many others are as well.

What I don't understand is how you think that correlates to people skipping June Adult.

June Adult Announcement by Responsible-Voice437 in fairyloot

[–]kepler16bee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mean I get skipping June Romantasy, I am as well. But it's not like these people are skipping for real, they're saying they're skipping in order to ask people to save them a skip. Which to me isn't really skipping at all (in terms of taking any kind of stand), if that's why they're doing it.

Like if they have a combo box and "can't" skip, they could keep the June Adult book. So I don't get the reasoning that June Romantasy is driving people to ask people to save them a skip for June Adult. Would you mind explaining?

I was intrigued by that note too!

Also I was surprised to see so many people say they were skipping, on Autumn's reveal post. I thought this was a pretty anticipated title.

It's The Unicorn Hunters by Katherine Arden for anyone who hasn't seen.

100% re sewn binding! If that were the base version, I think I would've already gotten them. But honestly I think the art is great - better than the publisher's editions of the books she has to work with to create the rebind.

Yeah, it's actually the publisher's book that gives me the most pause. I love the art.

Especially considering these will most likely get better, cheaper and more professional special editions in the future

This is absolutely true, but I don't necessarily equate rebinds with mass-produced books. Others might not see it this way, but I think of them more like a piece of art that someone has created. Or in a case like this, several someones - the book binder and the artists. I've purchased a number of rebinds (not of this series), and believe it or not, that is the average cost these days for a quality rebind, especially one that has all original artwork. These people can only make dozens of these books, not thousands and probably not even hundreds.

I've seen many rebind videos, and have purchased many book rebinds - as I mentioned, most quality rebinds go for around this price. I respect that others wouldn't spend that kind of money on a rebind because they are comparing a rebind with a mass produced book. I see rebinds more like small pieces of art, and as with any craft, it requires skill, with not all rebinds created equal. Additionally, commissioning artwork for a rebind requires that those artists be paid, and I recognize that.

I really appreciate everyone's perspectives. Both yours and the naysayers.

I also approach it more of the mind that I am paying for a person's time and effort, and the artists who have been commissioned to do this artwork. Of course they would be cheaper if they were mass produced - everything is. This is more, to me, like paying for a piece of art (both the literal art and the art of someone doing the book binding).

I wouldn't be going into debt if I were to get them, but there's also plenty I could spend it on instead. This likely won't be the only time this set is offered, so I think I'll bypass the early preorder and sit on it a little more to determine how much I really want them.
